No comments from me and I\'m not trying to start a rehashed discussion, but I did find this CBS article rather interesting.

isnt interesting how hardcore fundamentalists poo-poo science, until they have a medical condition, when they suddently trust (medical) science unquestioningly?
if youre so hardcore in your belief that the bible is right and science is wrong, what are ya goin to the doctor for? after all, hes just some godless atheist whos just trying to destroy your faith in god with his evil science

Soon the empire will collapse!

If people get any dumber it will be a good argument to support a shut down of public education.

Apes in the plan
We’re all here to prove it

CB - I think you're being over dramatic about the issue. For many the issue isn't either/or, it's both.

Oops, you said hardcore fundamentalist. Seems like you hear about one of those folks making the news every few years 'cause they won't go to a doc. That's nuts. They drive cars though.

I'll agree with teaching it as long as they teach all myths regarding creation. I really enjoy some of the Native American tales.

I just now looked at the link. Teach creation only? That's nuts. My wife's uncle was our hs biology teacher. He's a devout Christian. This is in a small town that's very religous. I don't recall him even mentioning creation, unless directly asked. That's as it should be. He would preface comments that they were his opinion and not stay on topic too long. He quickly got back to evolution.

I'm more on the bandwagon that God gave a push to get things going and then the laws of nature/science that He created took over. The world really is 7billion? years old.

"In the beginning there were only two: Tawa, the Sun God, and Spider Woman, the Earth Goddess. All the mysteries and power in the Above belonged to Tawa, while Spider Woman controlled the magic of the Below. In the Underworld, abode of the Gods, they dwelt and they were All. There was neither man nor woman, bird nor beast, no living thing until these Two willed it to be...

My BF teaches high school science - and he gets a WHOLE lot of discussion from students and parents on teh creationism vs. evolution thing. His master's thesis will revolve around something similar, and he's going to do a community education program for the adults about it. I just sent him this link to the article.

Many parents are concerned that evolution be taught as a theory. Of course, it is, becuase its not been proven (though there is much evidence). But they don't understand what the term "theory" means and they get their panties in a wad that evolution is being taught at all.

I don't think creationism should be taught in school(and I'm a fairly religious Christian). Seems that it blurs the line of keeping the church and state separate. You want to learn about creationism? Go to church.

HOwever, I believe that evolution exists, and that God guided it. Did it happen in 7 days? Sure it did. What we think of as 7 days and what God thinks of as 7 days are diffent things.

And then it came about that these Two had one Thought and it was a might Thought -- that they would make the Earth to be between the Above and the Below where now lay shimmering only the Endless Waters. So they sat them side by side, swaying their beautiful bronze bodies to the pulsing music of their own great voices, making the First Magic Song, a song of rushing winds and flowing waters, a song of light and sound and life.

"I am Tawa," sang the Sun God. "I am Light. I am Life. I am Father of all that shall ever come."

"I am Kokyanwuhti," the Spider Woman crooned. "I receive Light and nourish Life. I am Mother of all that shall ever come."

"Many strange thoughts are forming in my mind -- beautiful forms of birds to float in the Above, of beasts to move upon the Earth and fish to swim in the Waters," intoned Tawa.

"Now let these things that move in the Though of Tawa appear," chanted Spider Woman, while with her slender fingers she caught up clay from beside her and made the Thoughts of Tawa take form. One by one she shaped them and laid them aside -- but they breathed not nor moved."

"We must do something about this," said Tawa. "It is not good that they lie thus still and quiet. Each thing that has a form must also have a spirit. So now, my beloved, we must make a mighty Magic."

They laid a white blanket over the many figures, a cunningly woven woolen blanket, fleecy as a cloud, and made a mighty incantation over it, and soon the figures stirred and breathed.

"Now, let us make ones like unto you and me, so that they may rule over and enjoy these lesser creatures," sang Tawa, and Spider Woman shaped the Thoughts into woman and man figures like unto their own. But after the blanket magic had been made, the figures remained inert. So Spider Woman gathered them all in her arms and cradled them, while Tawa bent his glowing eyes upon them. The two now sang the magic Song of Life over them, and at last each human figure breathed and lived.

"Now that was a good thing and a mighty thing," said Tawa. "So now all this is finished, and there shall be no new things made by us. Those things we have made shall multiply. I will make a journey across the Above each day to shed my light upon them and return each night to Huzruiwuhti. And now I shall go to turn my blazing shield upon the Endless Waters, so that the Dry Land may appear. And this day will be the first day upon Earth."

im with smiley girl. i believe in evolution, however, i do not believe in natural selection. and thats the other thing. saying evolution is a theory is like saying "the earth revolving around the sun" is just a theory. its so commonly accepted that there are no serious discussions on whether or not evolution occurred, but rather on how it occurred. species changed over millions of years. thats not the debate. the real debate is how it changed. was it completely random natural selection, or something else? thats where the legitimate scientists are spending their time

Theory:
1. A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.

2. The branch of a science or art consisting of its explanatory statements, accepted principles, and methods of analysis, as opposed to practice: a fine musician who had never studied theory.

3. A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics.
Abstract reasoning; speculation: a decision based on experience rather than theory.

4. A belief or principle that guides action or assists comprehension or judgment: staked out the house on the theory that criminals usually return to the scene of the crime.

5. An assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture.

Bison, I think you're wrong.

I think it IS taught as theory. People just don't catch that it is a theory. You think that things taught in a school are always true. They're not, and I think people just take it for granted that its a theory while its being taught. That's where the disconnect is.
Smiley Girl

11/23/04

Sorry BearMag, but evolution is a non issue for me. The theory and it’s arguments on both sides have been so over used as a means to prove or disprove G-d that it is just silly. To use a theory either way is just self defeating. One of the least used phrases with religious people is “Hell, I don’t know.”. I have absolutely no problem conceding that I don’t know one way or the other. And I really don’t care because I don’t base faith on it either way.

the conflict lies with fundamentalist ways of thinking. they will say themselves, that if one part of the bible is untrue, then their whole faith becomes unravelled. its all or nothing for them, and thus they will defend vigorously every single account in the bible as literally true, to the point of attacking anything in secular culture that blatantly contradicts biblical literalism.

Thank You!
But you are wrong.

Water is composed of H2O in equillibrium with OH & H3O.

The original model wasn't wrong, it was a theory based on our best knowledge. The current model is also a theory which may be developed further, but the BASE model was a nice starting point, eh?

As for Einstein, yes, he believed in God. So much that quantum mechanics bugged the crap out of him. But in the end, he acknowledged the science.

He was smart enough to distinquish between science and religion.

He also probably had a pretty decent IQ.

AQnd I just read DH's post. I must make a list of things to do. First priority on new list:

Make list.

DH
Was it E's acceptance/non-acceptance of Quantum Mechanics? I'm thinking people thought he never accepted QM because of this:

"By the mid 1930s, Einstein had accepted quantum mechanics as a consistent theory for the statistics of the behavior of atoms. He recognized that it was "the most successful physical theory of our time." This theory, which he had helped to create, could explain nearly all the physical phenomena of the everyday world. Eventually the applications would include transistors, lasers, a new chemistry, and more. Yet Einstein could not accept quantum mechanics as a completed theory, for its mathematics did not describe individual events. Einstein felt that a more basic theory, one that could completely describe how each individual atom behaved, might yet be found. By following the approach of his own general theory of relativity, he hoped to dig deeper than quantum mechanics. The search for a deeper theory was to occupy much of the rest of his life."

"Of all the communities available to us there is not one I would want to devote myself to, except for the society of the true searchers, which has very few living members at any time."

If Einstein could have proved God didn't exist he would have published it.
