I've enjoyed Buddha, even though he goes over the top sometimes - including with aggressive bombast (and I was a target of that a few years back). Buddha, if your reading, I hope you'll return after a while. And thanks for putting me in the same category as Phil, the guy who I think has contributed more good stuff and thrown less BS than anyone on TT ever (or has the highest Good Stuff to negative BS ratio, for us pseudo mathematicians).

I never met any of the people in this dispute, so I can't make any judgments. On line, Sass and Birch have great GS/BS ratios, even by my biased scoring I'm sure Sass's is better than mine - and Birch's may well be.”

“I may be in the minority but I say TT is real.

It is as real as talking to someone on the phone is real.

People do make friends online, people do encourage each other, teach each other, give advice, bond together, influence each other, care about each other... People do offend each other, hurt each other. People do feel included or excluded. People do show their own class or the lack thereof. People do apologize, explain, make things right.

I don't know. Maybe I take the whole online thing too seriously. But I can tell you that I believe I have a real relationship with many of you, an unstated (or sometimes stated) friendship, an honest human interpersonal connection.

All the nonsense that goes on...to me, it can and should be fun. But I don't think that invalidates the real love we share when one of us loses a dog--or a parent. Or, when one of us is burned in a fire. Or when one is in an accident. Or the joy we share when one of us accomplishes a goal, falls in love, has a baby.

It is either all real (including real humor, and real good-natured hoaxes) or it is all a sad farce. To say the only real thing is when we are on the trail invalidates a lot of truly beautiful interpersonal connection that has happened here over the years.

So the whole EBANOT thing really made me sad. And this does too, even though I haven't yet met these people.

“I also agree with Fritz. While I do treat TT as if it is real I am also realistic in what I can expect from others and what they can expect from me. I have many acquaintances and few true friends. “Friend” is something I do not toss around much because it means so much to me. There are people have hiked with I don’t call friend but do call them acquaintances and there are people I have never even met that I call friend and not acquaintances. I don’t treat friendship flippantly because if I call someone a friend, they are my friend ‘til death. No matter what they go through or what they do I am there for them without question.

I treat everyone with equitable feelings…wanna hang out and have fun?… cool…wanna rip into me and get hateful?…fine. I’m not even that quick to jump on someone when they do want to be insulting but if I can tell it’s not going to stop I want just sit back and take it. I know it’s much better to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and I try to give equal respect until it gets turned into a “do unto others as they do unto you” thing.”

I can truly say that, even with the moments that infuriated me, TT has been an enriching experience, whether its been virtual conversations or real-life hiking and paddling trips. And that includes meeting BB, with whom I'd exchanged a few flames.”

And Ped, I think you may have me mixed up with someone else, but I thank you just the same. My GS/BS ratio is just like everyone elses, constantly shifting with the BS sometimes overcoming the GS and spilling all over my life, making a mess. =)”
