Rocky trip in the planning stages

“SS...it would be ontrail. I remember that offtrail trip...it was a doozey! to say the least. Fun stuff! I know about the high elevetions. I was there in May 3 years ago (or was it 4) and there was 4' of hardpack once we got up near tree line. We couldn't go anyfurther as we didnt' have crampons and we were hiking in shorts and t's, but, there is plenty of low elevation stuff that could be done, with the mtns in the back and foreground. Glad your interested...I know YOU could be relied upon to save my sorry arse if it came down to it. There seems to be such crap flying on TT these days, it makes me wonder if traveling with anyone other than myself is smart. Your not one of the "uglies". Thanks!!!

I've done a few different trails over the years, so I have a good understanding of the front range. If Indian Peaks is not doable...then maybe the mummy range...I've got a date to hump Mummy and piss off her back.”

Even with snow on the higher spots, your right there is PLENTY of places to hang out for a few days.

I was thinking the other night that I'd like to check out the Dunes in late spring/early summer.”

“I hiked up Star Dune and went down the other side and found a real secluded dune...no one was on my side of Star. I got nekkid and laid out on a blanket for a few hours and got nice and tan and then hiked out (with clothes on) and went back to my camp site and had THE best time there. You can camp anywhere on the dunes as long as it is not within site of the park office.

Fun stuff...some Mt Dew dudes were sand surfin and everyone was playin in the Little Medano Crk.”

“Indian Peaks, yeah! I LOVE Indian Peaks!!!

Been in three areas in Indian Peaks:

1. A day hike to Lost Lake, going in from Nederland and up past that little ski resort.

2. A day hike in the Brainard Lake rec area to .. hmmm... Long Lake??? The trail continues up to the Divide.

3. On the western side, an old RR bed/now forest road accesses the western side of Indian Peaks at Rollins Pass. You can access Indian Peaks from over 11,000 feet there. And look east and immediately across the valley see the Winter Park ski area hills.

With Shiela's around, I'll be forced to remain consevative. plus...you'd be able to utilize your newly honed backpacking skills vs. car camping/day hiking...just remember...this is gonna be a 5.5 day trek...no resupply.”

Please don't carve out any time yet. I'd feel guilty if this doesn't happen and others have set it in stone, but then again, others can and once in a while do hike without me, it just isn't as rewarding, thats all.”

If it does come to pass, would you be able to take the time to do a 5 day trip? I'd really like to go and get lost for a longer spell..I've done 3 dayers and they are great, but I really want to do an extended gig so that I can have more potential to die a horrible death. “Unless I am unduly released from my employer prior to this event, then I can comfortably presume that I will be going to Denver for business from May 1 thru the 5th. So the dates that SL outlines are correct for a pre-meeting jaunt up to the highlands of the Rockies...Arrival would be on Wed April the 27th in the evening. @ 8 or so. With an airport return on Sunday @2pm.

Roam Around...could you join us for that time frame for an extended journey...it is shorter than what I wanted to do originally, but we don't always get what we want and have to do what we are permitted to do.”

Arrival on Wed April 27th @8pm, trek someplace, hopefully up in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area, more than likely, with either crampons up top or snowshoes...It don't make much a difference...as long as I get up into them thar hills. More details to emerge as we get closer. Roam is the local guy so, he will be fully up to speed on conditions.

That same site has brief descripts for several other destinations too. I may try to get over there next weekend and Scout around a bit. The road to Brainard Lake is supposed to be kept closed until June - so add 1.7 miles to every trail starting at Brainard Lake.”

“road closed till june...makes me think another location could be advisable for this trek...it'll be bad enough gettin off a plane and going straight to the mtns, without battling snow too..., but I'm not counting ANYTHING out until closer and you get to do some scouting. I think I'd be up to a 15 mile trek in 3 days...that would allow lots of dink around time for photography and exploring side highlights. Mileage is not really a goal...I could care less about logging mileage. My whole thing is enjoyment and lusciousness without being beaten up or eatin up.

I was looking over the map and found a nice looking loop hike near beaver meadows...its probably pretty tame compared to what you and I have done before, but tame is not such a bad thing as long as the topography is stupendous and the photo ops are awsome. check out Fern Lake trail and the trail around Mt Wul. That could be a good back up plan if the Peaks are snowed in. It might be a bit more touristy as it is so close to the Meadows visitor center and 4 trail heads. Conditions will dictate where and what we will be able to do.”

Otherwise this will be a 2 person trek into the Mtns. More than likely we will be snowshoeing for the 3 days that we are up there...low mileage, with maximum mtn eyecandy.
