Questionable Recruiting Tactics?

“I could use an answer fast, please.

Skinny:

1. I work for a temp agency (A) that pays crap.

2. An Admin Asst told me another agency recruits for where I work and pays more.

3. I ask Agency "A" for a raise b/c I've been here for a year. They put me on hold

4. I call Agency "B" and the offer me a $1.35 more for my job

5. Agency "A" gives me $1.00 raise.

6. I tell Agency "B" and they see the $1.00 and raise .90c

7. I accept

8. Agency "B" tells me to tel "A" that I got hired on full time

9. My boss won't back me up on that.

Turns out Agency "B" used to work for "A" and is recruiting people away as an upstart, and knows how "A" works intamitly. "B" also told the Admin Asstt they were shocked "A" gave me a raise and they might be getting flack over recruiting.

Is recruiting away not legitimate? What do I tell "A"? they will ask my boss why I left and why he doesn't need a replacement.

HELP!”

“You've alluded several times that the job you currently hold may go away soon anyway. Is this because the lab will close soon? If so, you might do better to stay with "A" if they are more established and will be more likely to be able to get you another job when your current job goes away.

As far as ethics go, I wouldn't worry about it too much, you're a part-time temp. Finding a permanent position is completely understandable.”

I can't lie because my boss won't. And yes, the lab will close by July. I might gamble that I will be able to find FT work”

If you've developed a good relationship with them, do you really want to burn bridges?

OR, do you think they might consider paying you more if they know that another agency is luring you away?”

“OK, I re-read your original message, and I think I understand now. "B" wants you to lie. I would say to not do that, as it may burn your bridges with "A". "B" is being a little cagey, probably to keep "A" from taking action to keep him from stealing more clients.

I don't know what the labor laws are like in the D.C. area concerning this, but I doubt if it's illegal to recruit employees in this manner. You shouldn't lie to "A" but you don't have to tell them everything either. Just tell them you got a better deal.”

“Pink - "A" sucks. They might have only offered more money b/c they have lost employees to "B". They also don't have PTO - they give a wks pay after every 6mos. But now it's changed to every 9mos, so I got sheeyat from them. Not sure you can "burn a bridge" with a temp agency? They're just looking to fill holes.

I like bits idea. I'll tell 'em I got a better deal, if they find out they find out, no?

“Be honest with A and B. You're not operating under a contract, so you are free to do anything you want. In my experience, when you're honest about your reasons for leaving, even when unpleasant, it doesn't burn any bridges.”

“Hey, it's temp, meaning they don't want any commitment so as far as I see it, you are ok to go where the money is.”

“yes, but what I mean is that because A is your employer, you don't really want to leave on bad terms... What happens if B doesn't work out? If you've left on bad terms, you won't be ablet to return to A....

I'd let A know that you are considering leaving because you've been offered a better pay... maybe that will get them to step up to the plate. After all-- without their temps, they make NO money.”

“Temp agencies are worse than "companies". When I first found out that i was gonna be a "perm-temp" I wanted another job and told my agency.

you think they tried to help me much? No, because they would have to find me a job and fill another vacancy. I told 'em to forget it after a month but it left it's mark.

I could start with "B" this coming Monday...”

“The problem is that most people don't view their temp agency as their employer-- therefore they are concerned with their work record looking "spotty". However, my friend who always temped until she got her current job, told me that you have to look at them as you actual employer, vs. the offices you are working in.

I would suggest you do a little more background check into company B.... if they are willing to have you "lie" to your current employer, they may or may not turn out to be the best company to work for....

The only thing that might affect you is that "A" might hold a grudge and not help you out down the road somewhere. But if your honest with them they may not hold it against you - it IS "all about the Benjamins" at the end of the day.”
