Deep fried turkeyView Messages“I am deep frying two for our family and two for others tomorrow morning. By this time Friday, my arteries should be pretty well clogged up, but once I had turkey deep fried, the baked version tastes like cardboard.” 1:27:03 PM 11/24/04 “Fried or smoked are the only ways to prepare edible turkey.” 1:27:44 PM 11/24/04 “Yum! I'm doing one for X-Mas.” 1:27:52 PM 11/24/04 “Make sure the fryer is well away from your house, and deep-fry away!” 1:28:49 PM 11/24/04 “Yum indeed!” 1:28:57 PM 11/24/04 “mmm, i'll have that! and a deep-fried snickers to go w/it.” 1:30:16 PM 11/24/04 “WOOT! I'll be smokin' tomorrow...turkey and pork that is. Good Luck Chili !” 1:30:52 PM 11/24/04 “BP, I set it up in the middle of the yard. Three gallons of hot oil hitting a flame can be like a napalm strike. Haven't ever had a mishap, but I have seen one.” 1:31:08 PM 11/24/04 “Hee hee, I did a twenty pounder under a carport one time due to rain. The oil did spill out a bit and catch on fire when I lowered the bird in. I just put the lid on and most of the flames went out. The fire on the floor soon went out. Ha Ha.” 1:31:50 PM 11/24/04 “Smoking a ham myself! Baking turkey in the oven, per my mom's request. Cool chili...hot berling erl over a fire is dangerous!” 1:32:13 PM 11/24/04 “ ”1:33:15 PM 11/24/04 “never had deepfried turkey. is it yummy?” 1:34:49 PM 11/24/04 “It's delicious. UNbelievable.” 1:35:10 PM 11/24/04 “The oil keeps the moisture in the bird. Yum yum yum!” 1:36:02 PM 11/24/04 “hmmm, so it's still not very greasy then huh? I don't like grease too much.” 1:37:09 PM 11/24/04 “No, it is not greasy. And once you have a turkey deep fried, you are ruined if you ever try to go back to the dried out baked version. Violin, seeing as how all the burning grease will be around his ankles, I am not too sure how safe that guy really is.” 1:38:30 PM 11/24/04 1:39:09 PM 11/24/04 “hmm, i see those things all the time, not too expensive either. I may just get me one after thanksgiving.” 1:39:45 PM 11/24/04 “Having seen a mishap, I can say the pic posted by violin is an accurate depiction of what happens when you #&%!$ up.” 1:41:40 PM 11/24/04 Worst case scenario “ ”1:44:47 PM 11/24/04 “Just be sure to let the turkey warm up to room temp before you fry it. The key to REALLy good deep fried turkey is to not let the oil temp drop below 300. I mix Tony Chachere (sp?) and beer and inject it into my turkey. It's to die for.” 1:46:53 PM 11/24/04 “I use the Cajun Injector garlic and butter on mine.” 1:48:51 PM 11/24/04 “I hear those fried turkeys are great and take maybe 6 minutes or so per pound to cook, but don't quote me on the cooking time. I cook my turkey with bacon slices over the top. It gives the top slices of turkey a nice bacon taste, and it keeps the turkey moist if you don't over cook it. A turkey should not be dry unless you overcook it. If you are not a great cook, get the ones with the pop up timer. I have never had a dry turkey. I always get Butterballs, but I found no timer in this one. There is a 1-800 number for help with cooking them, which I will call to find out how many minutes per pound it will take. It should be about 10-15 minutes per pound like with a whole chicken, but with a big bird such as a turkey, you can be off quite a bit if you don't cook it for exactly the correct minutes per pound.” 1:50:50 PM 11/24/04 “LOL bit. did it explode?” 1:51:13 PM 11/24/04 “lol that is a napalm strike... last edited: 11/24/04 1:53:52 PM” 1:53:36 PM 11/24/04 “dang bitces you makin me hungary” 1:53:36 PM 11/24/04 “I wanted to get one last year, tree said no. should deep fry his aSSS!” 1:54:56 PM 11/24/04 “Somehow I don't think that would be as tasty as turkey.” 1:56:03 PM 11/24/04 “LOL hey my hubbys butt could be yummy. ya never know” 1:56:57 PM 11/24/04 “I'm sending him email right now...” 1:57:43 PM 11/24/04 “Dang mapleleaf, you two would surely burn down the neighborhood!! Chili, is there anything you southern fools won't fry?” 1:58:06 PM 11/24/04 “coo then maybe I will get one this year. or end up in it LOL” 1:58:16 PM 11/24/04 “I didn't know you could cook a turkey in napalm.” 1:59:39 PM 11/24/04 “MarkO - fried dill pickle chips are popular down here as well.” 2:00:44 PM 11/24/04 “Burns all the feathers off, no plucking! Smells like victory too.” 2:01:43 PM 11/24/04 “no burns all the flesh off and smells like rubber” 2:02:09 PM 11/24/04 “bitpusher - actually I thought that was when the propane tank went - oh well just a napalm strike sigh” 2:02:10 PM 11/24/04 “lol sorry to disappoint...” 2:03:30 PM 11/24/04 “I love the smell of turkey in the morning.” 2:04:56 PM 11/24/04 “Chili, is there anything you southern fools won't fry?” MarkO 1:58:06 PM 11/24/04 If you can't fry it....it aint edible.” 2:06:31 PM 11/24/04 “That is pretty much the Southern credo.” 2:07:16 PM 11/24/04 “I always wanted to smoke a turkey... ...but I could never figure out which end to light!” 2:08:47 PM 11/24/04 “When not frying... Another way to keep a turkey from drying out is to marinade it in a brine solution. I've done it several times and have had good luck with it. A brine solution is especially usefull when smoking the turkey so it doesn't dry out. There are a lot of brine recipes out there so search for one if you're interested. I want a smoked flavor in my birds so I use a very simple brine that involves vinegar, salt, and water. I have a container just big enough for the bird that will fit on the bottom shelf of my fridge. I soak the bird for 24hrs before cooking it. I thought it sounded crazy at first but it really keeps the bird moist!” 2:20:13 PM 11/24/04 “MDS - I smoke mine with the water pan at the bottom full and put a pound of thick cut bacon on the top rack. The bacon drips down on the turkey on the bottom rack. Takes about 12 hours.” 2:23:19 PM 11/24/04 “Hee hee hee, now y'all are gonna get mapleleaf and Gemini in deep, givin' 'em such ideas. I keep seein' the guys who says, "Hold my beer while I show y'all somethin"” 2:24:39 PM 11/24/04 “what are you guys doing to make a turkey dry by cooking it in the oven. Every turkey I have had was always moist. Nothing like a juicy turkey breast” 2:29:22 PM 11/24/04 “You have it all wrong, Mark O... The correct expression is "Ya'll hold my beer and watch this"” 2:46:11 PM 11/24/04 “LOL bit you eamiled tree. you tattle tail!” 2:48:31 PM 11/24/04 “mm hmm....” 2:49:08 PM 11/24/04 “Does that mean that Bit is in deep fried sh_t with you, Maple?” 2:53:50 PM 11/24/04
