that seems to imply that if you dont have god in your life, youre not happy, which is false.

the implication was that God and marriage are meant to go together, not that you can't be happy without God (although ...)

, but in essence it means trying to be loving towards others as a couple.

That makes a certain amount of sense. No need to attribute it to a skygod to see the truth of it.

whats that country song that is always played around christmas, about the guy who is waiting for jesus to come and visit him, and instead all these different people in need come by, and he helps them in whatever way he can, and at the end of the day, jesus didnt come, so he prays, and asks jesus why he didnt come, but jesus says i was the little girl, old woman, crippled man, etc....?

On a serious note
(substituting "s for apostrophes)

Where I agree with HPD:

I think my marriage is profoundly strengthened by a deepening commitment to working together to serve others. A family is strengthened in that manner as well. This works on at least two levels:

First, I think what Hillel said for individuals is true for couples and family - so I will put it in the plural:

“If we are not for ourselves, then who will be for us? And if we are only for ourselves then what are we (as a couple)? And if not now, when?”

Working for a higher goal than simply making the relationship work helps a couple work better. Yes, we are improved by loving one person”s welfare an end and not a means. But it is even better when that concern expands and the concern is shared as a couple.

Secondly, as Plato says "I love my friend because I love the good and I see the good in my friend." By seeing my wife”s commitment to doing good, I love her more.

I have a suspicion that this works best if the shared goal is about more than politics. It is all too easy for politics to become crudely about power, antagonism and resentment. Politics lends itself too easily to disparagement of the opposition and feelings of superiority. At times, feeling I was on the right side of things politically was a cheap susbtitute for taking real steps to do real good for others.

As I strive to be a better person (a daunting task when I look at myself honestly) and keep my marriage strong - these are the kinds of things I consider.

While my knee jerk reaction to people saying "We are all miserable sinners and without Jesus we are nothing," is highly negative - and I think feeling that one has the right true religion can be the same poor substitute for doing real good just as it can be in politics - I realize there is a truth there that goes beyond any one religion.

Maybe I am guilty of being biased by my theophobia. IMO, too many people have suffered and died in conflicts over who had the best imaginary friend. But when HPD writes "IMO, marriage is a bond where 2 people come together and use the power of that combined love (like wonder twins) to try to honor God. What "honoring God" looks like may be different for different people, but in essence it means trying to be loving towards others as a couple I say "amen!" - that has been my experience.

Extremely well said. Our first corporate objective is to Honor God in All We Do.

This company is very clear that that means a lot of things to a lot of people.

The word "service" should be incorporated into many more businesses. Some spiritual teachers say that "service is the way".
If more individuals and companies saw themselves as servants, I think we would see quite a lot of positive change.

Ped,

Like any organization, we are not without problems. However, that being said, I can say that we readily adopt these objectives into our business units, and further down into our operational units.

We readily refer to our first objective in all aspects of our business. Those who do not adopt the philosophy of doing the right thing, just do not last too long.

But, that being said, it is the bad behaviour that gains the most attention. I suppose that holds true with most groups.

In our original business unit, ServiceMaster Clean, it is much more ingrained into the daily operations. In our acquisitions, it has readily been adopted. By no means is it a religious statement, but we drive ethics at every level.

In our opinion, it is the market differeniator that defines who we are.

People with faith scare non-believers. Sarah Palin scares liberals. Hunters scare people who do not own guns. This scare thing is an easy answer to everything. Keep it up. It keeps you from having to really understand the other side of an argument.
