Wal Mart has the Aluminium...
dutch ovens, but they are designed for the household grill...(No flat top, no legs) just a cast aluminium bottom and lid with a bakelite handle on the dome lid...9/12 dollars depending on the size, cheap imports from mexico.....

I also found large 2 gallon plastic jars with screw on lids...(STIKMON take note: they are like large nalgene bottles, only light plastic) 2.97 Each. (Both items are in housewares....)

and...
what do I need 2 gallon plastic jars for. I can't seem to recall me saying " I wish I had a 2 gallon plastic jar with a screw off lid", but I might have, who knows...the voices in my head say that "maybe I should go and get them", but, what do they know.

Eggs ya dummy...LOL
when ya pack 8 1/2 dozen eggs a regular nalgene bottle just isn't big enough...

oh, and by the way, try this new backpacking stove...maybe we don't NEED Dutch ovens anymore....sheesh!

I have actually looked at that stove but where is the sport or the challenge there. Although I guess you could bake chocolate chip cookies to have hot at camp. Maybe Davinity could fix some hot cocoa and Bailey's to wash them down with. Ah, camp living. Give me a break I will stick to my dutches and the camp stove. So far they have worked just fine. Have you seen the automatic drip coffe makers that Coleman makes to sit on top of the cook stove. Another one of those can you believe someone thought they had to have that out camping. I guess if you are traveling in a bus and want to call that camping then that is camping gear. Me I still travel with a large camp kitchen but I don't think I need all the conveniences of home.

Frosty Blue Ball Float
Say the float on MLK day could we do a base camp at Whitten then self shuttle to Greer float to Whitten and camp then self shuttle to riverton. Would allow us to leave camp set up. Also for those of us who hate the cold I can car camp in my X terra with my catalytic heater and the thick air mattress. If someone gets too cold they can bug out to the hotel in alton mo. If Aaron comes we get two night of excellent guitar. Plus less work putting up and tearing down camp. And we can travel lighter on the river. It's a win-win-win idea.

I started it now lets run with it.
Dave and stikmon I started a new trip. Since you guys may be to busy with the BB trip to do that right now. I hope I didn't step on any toes. Let me know what your thoughts are?

nah...its cool...
but, we usually don't mess with the cars. it takes away from the wilderness experience.

I decided to buy about 50 of those hand warmers and sleep with them at night.....Or I guess I could offer the money to a guy....or I could use the money to buy a dog......

dutch oven size suggestion
i recommend starting with either a 10" or a 12" dutch oven. If you think you will consistantly cook for 4-6 adults, i would get the 12" standard (6 qt). If you will be cooking for 2 adults and 2 children, then the 10" might be better. The 12" 6 qt is the size that is most common according to something i have read. I used the 14" when i made the bisquits & gravy on the 'current river' trip, (which fed 20 +/- people). I have a 12" deep (8 qt which holds the same volume as the 14") and my 12" is probably the least used. It works extremely well for cooking soups, baking chickens, and large roasts. My 10" works extremely well for brownies, cobblers, and marginally for cakes (slightly too much batter to suit me). When I go by myself or maybe 1 or two more people, I usually use the 10" the most.
One thing to also keep in mind -- the bigger the oven, the more coals it takes to heat it to the proper temperature (every time!)

If you intend to use your oven outdoors, be 100% sure that you get the oven with the 3 legs on the bottom and the flat lid with the raised outer edge. I strongly encourage that you purchase a lid lifter and get welder's gloves as cobbler guy previously suggested. Pliers, multipurpose tools, vise grips, etc. work when the proper tool is not available, but the first time you get seriously burned, the money spent given to the doctor will far exceed that for the price of the proper equipment. With pliers or similar tool, you may frequently have to remove coals from the lid to reduce the heat just so you can check your food. And just in case you think that welders gloves will allow you to lift the lid with pliers--think again! There are many times when the gloves get hot too. (Especially if you let stikmon build the fire.)

I'd also recommend a set of tongs for moving the coals around.
