Trip Report MD AT

“Overnight trip to Pogo Campsite on the Maryland AT 11/27/04. Lots of rain, cold, and blaze orange.

It is a good alternative spot now that they have turned Annapolis Rocks into a no campfire, designated tent site area. I enjoy a good fire, especialy when my clothes are soaked and it's 40 degrees out :)

Pogo is a memorial campground, hence the name.”

You carry one of those big collapsable water jugs? I have one for car camping, but I always thought it would be too big and bulky for backpacking?”

“Thanks for the pics! That shelter reminds me a lot of the one at Crampton's Gap. I guess all the shelters along the MD AT are built using the same plans... Were there candle sconces on the walls inside?”

“Indiana,

That water jug weighs very little when empty. We do not carry it full, (stuffs into my pack pocket empty), and then I spend forever filling it up with my pur hiker filter. But it's all the water we need for the night, morning, refill the bottle for the hike the next day, and with some left to put out the fire. :)

MD AT shelters are very similar. Pine Knob is almost empty inside. Only think in that shelter is mice poop and a journal.”

“cool site tarp! I may try and do some hiking down in MD before the year is out. the 17-18 of December I will either do something in WV, SNP or MD. That shelter looks pretty cool. Never hiked in MD even though I lived there for over a year.”

Yes I know Catoctin. There is no backpacking there, just day hikes and car camping. Pretty place, but very crowded on weekends.

I'm probably going to set up another AT trip this summer. My brother and a friend are talking about doing a week-long trip so I was thinking about arranging it so there would be a weekend option for TTers (or for the whole week if desired, but most TTers do weekends).

I've done all of MD so I was thinking about starting at the MD/PA line (Penmar park) and working north. Anyone interested?”

“Vermont may be a better place to live, but WVa has vast wilderness areas.

Vermont has the AT and Long Trail.”

“We won't be backpacking in Vermont this year, just snowboarding, day hikes, and longtrail beer. Lyra got some new snowshoes for her birthday, so hopefully some real snow will fall within the next 2 weeks.

North from Penmar isn't a great section in my opinion. Have you been further north to Pine Grove Furnace SP? that is an ok section.”

“MDtrails: I've done the area roughly between William Penn, Rauch Gap, Peters Mountain Shelters, twice. That the area you are talking about? I like that area and will get back there, but I'm looking to continue the non-offical section hike I have started so far. What don't you like about Penmar, north?”

“That's cool, I just don't like that area, not very pretty in my opinion. But if you are doing sections you should do it.”

“PA AT pretty much sucks, especially in the Cumberland Valley. Not real into hiking through cornfields.”

“Yup, the PA AT is kinda rough, especially North (East) of Harrisburg/Duncannon. I have yet to get out there, but I heard the area between the MD state line and Boiling Springs (PennMar, Caledonia, PGF, etc.) is nice though.

Perhaps if someone does an overnighter out there, y'all might be able to get me to sneak out...

“Roger that...

I had a bad experience that put me off of that area... We did an overnighter to Deer Lick Shelters a few years ago (caledonia area). Lots of dead deer in the woods rotting, misc white blazes that get you lost from the AT blazes, ugly woods, and just an overall unsafe feeling. We packed all the way into Deer lick shelters and back out as fast as we could after being lost all day from badly marked trails. We drove to Black Rocks road in Maryland and took a short cut up to Pogo and camped for the night.
