Alone in the Wilderness
I just got through watching a documentary about Richard Proenneke. It is the story of a man who moved to Alaska in 1968. He brought most of his possesions with him. He built his cabin with old fashion tools.
He lived alone for over 35 yrs. He was over 80 yrs old when he moved out since he couldn't handle the -50 degree temps in the winter.
The park service took over his cabin to preserve it as a historical place.

It was an amazing story to watch. He kept journals and took lots of photos.

I admire him because he did what many of us only fantasize about. He left society and went to live in the woods and built his cabin with his own two hands.

I am heading to the libary tomorrow to see if I can find the book. It ought to be very interesting to read.

here is a link if your interested

Bison, what did you think about the book. If it is anything like the movie it would be great.

Bummer!

Channel 56, our local PBS station has been out for a week or 2-- due to a lightening strike to their tower! :-( Don't know when they will be back online!

Pink, we've been wondering why 56 has been out for so long...I hope they are fixed soon.

I just read that on-line! I have been wondering about it too. I miss my public TV!

Eweker - I've only gotten to read a few chapters of the book, but it was interesting.

The book is great, but the movie is extremely well done (not quite 'Dr. Zhivago' where the movie was better than the book, however).

The DVD is fantastic because it gives background information on the filming and the story after. As a package it is outstanding.

As an afterthought, the book is in my opinion one of the three best works on climbing or adventure for that matter.

The others are (in my opinion) Krakauer's 'Into Thin Air' and Herzog's 'Annapourna, premier 8 000m mètres', which, I believe is available in English in a 50th anniversary special edition.

Gremlin, thanks for mentioning the DVD with the added features. I may just have to get the whole package.

Woo hoo!!!!
I got really worried a week or 2 ago when it was "fuzzed out"... thought that maybe they didn't make their fundraising and that we had lost them forever!

I love the Antiques Road Show and their history specials are interesting enought that I don't fall asleep... :-)

I especially like their "ARt Beat" segment on local Detroit ARtists... :-)

We've been going through "real TV" withdrawal since they went off-- I'm glad to hear that they are back again! IF it wasn't for Channel 56 and a show about Salmon Spawning, Thinkbubelz & I would have never gone to Alaska this past August!

I went to the library last night to see if they had the book or DVD. They do but there is a waiting list of 14 people on the books (they have 3) and 20 on the DVD (they have one). Guess I will check back in a month :(

BTW Great Performances was on last night and what a show it was. A lot of the great guitarist and song writers were on it. I did turn it down when they started doing (shivering) country music...yuck

You guys are crazy! Maybe it's because I have satelite? Abby watchs Aurthur every morning on channel 56. You haven't been missing much, it's fund raising time so it's all self help crap and the "thirty tenors sing Christmas".

You might be able to pull in channel 30 out of Toledo. Channel 28 comes from Flint. Channel 27 comes from Bowling Green, Ohio. Channel 25 comes from Cleveland. Channel 23 comes from Lansing.

All are public stations. I have a small $30 amplified antenna from Meijer that I hook up to my little color TV. It brings in 30 and 27 consistently. It brings in 23 and 28 half the time. It brings in 25 on clear or foggy days.

Cable is not necessary in SE Michigan.

Oh, and 32 is TVO, TV Ontario which is the high brow Canadian version of American public television. That should come in quite clear for all of you.
