Cannot speak for the sven.

I have the sawvivor and it cuts through anything. Folds up well and is light.

I like the fact that the saw is rectulageur

It allows you to use 2 hands if you desire.

I've never used a Sawvivor, but the Sven is a pretty good saw. REI page says the 21" is 17oz, 15" is 15oz.

unless your planning on cutting wood 4" or more diameter you might want to look at this saw 3.5 oz. http://www.gerbertools.com/8339.htm or this one 7.1 oz http://www.gerbertools.com/5064.htm

I've used a similar saw, and while the blade bent like crazy, it didn't break. But it was so hard to use in comparison to a Sven, that I'd stick with the Sven.

With MDSHiker's 21", I was easily cutting 6" hardwood. I've used Father Goose's 15" a few times, and it will easily cut 4", 6" is a little more difficult but can be cut.

No nefarious plans now, right?

I have a Gerber saw. Mine weighs 4 oz. I use it mostly for field dressing deer, but it will cut medium limbs. I have a sawvivor too that I take on group trips.

Get Either One
Small Sven is 11oz )if my memory serves me correctly).

I have a small Sven and cannot comment on a Survivor Saw, but either way a saw that'll cut large firewood is a nice item to have on cold-weather hikes.

FYI, if anyone's interested in the gerber pack hatchet, you can buy the same exact hatchet at homedepot, instead of an outfitter, with the fiskers name on it for half the cost.

I have a sven...
It cuts down forrests...The sawvivor is all aluminum...the sven has a different material. They are within 3 oz of each other. If that matters to you, then you are a slug. sheesh...bunch of whinny sissies. 3 oz isn't gonna kill you, actually, it might make you stronger to carry the lil bitty extra weight. Opie=girlyman.

Made In Minnesota By Minnesota Swedes
My first Sven is 20 years old and if that dude with the Popeye arms hadn't monkeyed the schit outta it I could still use it.

He bent it then bent it back into "shape".

I bought another........two...
I mislaid #2 and then there were three.

The Sven is light and very sharp and without musslin' the hell outta it, it will cut some pretty big stuff.

I like my Sawvivor better than the Sven Saw. I compared the two earlier this year on another thread. The Sawvivor does weigh less, and actually works better than the triangular shaped Sven. As stated you can use two hands with the Sawvivor and the blade is lifetime guaranteed. The four sides make a stronger saw (trapezoid to you geeks) than the three sided versions enableing you to cut larger pieces of wood. The two saws that Ewker linked to are mainly for bones, I checked into them also. I do have one for dressing deer only, even tho it can be used to clear away small limbs for a clear sight path from a stand. Opie, I would go for the Sawvivor!

ok so I go and pick up the sven and he doesn't even go hiking!

If a trapazoid is stronger....
why are the pyramids shaped in triangular fashion. and the Sven can be use with both hands...there is 4" handle section that hangs below the triangle, put one hand there and the other in the tri.

and about cutting large peices...It isn't meant for forrest clearing...its meant to cut fire wood...who in gods name cuts down anything that large with a hand saw...dopes. If your car campin, bring a chain saw and then you can cut down large hunks...for backpackin you only cut arm sized peices, maybe calf size, never thigh sized...sheesh. Like Shakespear said "much ado about nothing"...or something like that.

I'd race anyone on the sawvivor on same sized peices...but then again, I like sawing wood and am very good at it.

sawvivor fails in the long lasting test. No padded handle on the Sven. Its a serious saw for serious people. Wear gloves and leave the padded handle for girlypeople.

I was in Bass Pro Shops this past weekend. While I was there I decided to look at the Gerber saws I posted a link to. I wouldn't spend the money to buy on the smaller of the two.
I might spend the money on the larger one.

That thing is worthless techtrek. If I could find where I tossed mine, I'd send it to you.

A friend broke the blade on my Gerber saw when it bound in wood and bent on a stroke. Not exactly what you want to happen in freezing weather. I wouldn't get another saw that didn't fasten at both ends.

I haven't seen anything other than the Sven in action, but IMHO it would take a good saw to outperform it.

nice garden saw...
but you can't get two hands on it...and it takes two hands to handle the whopper.

I wouldn't trade my sven for a night in the sack with a woman...well, ok really I would, but you get the point, I've tried many saws, and the sven allows you to have both hands on the same side of the blade, which allows for pressure torque that is unmatched by any other saw.

I own a Gerber, a two handed chain saw type, the Sawvivor and the Sven. Karo is right. The Sawvivor is lighter, and cuts best since you can use the entire stroke. The Sven triangular shape hits the wood and your strokes are shorter. Both are better than the Gerber type blades since you use your arm to cut longer strokes whereas the Gerber requires you to use your forearm to grip the handle tightly and you cut much shorter strokes. The chain saw type is thicker which results in too much friction in the wood cut.

no Karo...
Ive decided that an 800 mile RT trip 2 weeks before a 3000 mile trip is not sane. and since I'm resting my sanity in other ways, this trip would really be putting too many miles on my in too short of a time. Another time we shall have a sawing duel...the challenge has been made and the blade cover been tossed down on the ground.

Heck, I don't have a blade cover for my saw, so what the F and I talking about. #&%!$ I need to go get started on the cardio work out. so I just better go bugger off.
