Scorchy turned Texan

“Got back today from a 4 day trip to see Batman luke's parent's in Mineola, TX.

It was a lot of fun.

Quick trip report (although no hiking involved, there was still quite a bit of outdoor activities :) )

Thurs: Arrived in Mineola around 7pm, ate dinner, met up with the family, took a walk around the lake that's connected with their property.

Fri: Batman luke took me on a tour of the town, met his sister for lunch at a Mexican restaurant (first time I ate Mexican food... yuck!) Also went on a boat ride on Lake Holbrook with his parents and brother. Saw 2 Bald Eagles during the ride. Apparently, there's a nest of them somewhere near the lake. Also, this was the first day I ever shot a gun! We were shooting at targets down by the lake and then fed the cows. Guess I'm a real hillbilly now : )
For dinner the whole family and us went out to yet another Mexican restaurant (YUCK!!!).
After dinner, we went back to the house and down by the lake we had a bonfire and lots of firecrackers (I was not amused, those things scare the crap outta me).

Sat: Went fishing at the pond on their property. YOURS TRULY caught the biggest fish. Went mudding (see pics). Went paintballing. I am now the owner of a paintball gun. WOOHOO! Watch out on backpacking trips, it is pretty lightweight. And, damn, do those things hurt. Afterwards, spent an hour and a half washing the truck, then went back home and had a huge dinner followed by game night and beer drinking.

Sun: Ate donuts for breakfast and headed to the airport for a flight back to Philly. Home boring home.

PS - "Y'all" is my new favorite word.

his dad has a wedding picture in his hand because we were taking a family shot and casey (luke's sister) wasn't there and he was kidding around saying he'll hold up the picture in her honor. it's a picture of her at her wedding day.

lizs, they didn't know i didnt' like mexican food : ) i keep my mouth shut good.

towndawg, he is a really great guy. the best one i've ever found, although i do often call him a hick, LOL.

dayhiker, i really did like the pace of things down there. everything and everybody is so laid back and just kind of go with the flow. i asked someone what time we'd be doing something the next day and they just kinda laughed at me and said "what time??? whenever the mood strikes."”

Best to level with people about your food likes and dislikes. If they think you like it, they'll take you every time. Then one day when you wrinkle up your nose at it, they're not going to be happy.”

“Sorry, ScorchFire. I simply tried to say something nice, while letting you know that I read your trip report. All my life that has meant that you are so nice that they must have been very happy to meet and/or see you.

"Down there" implies a location for the joyful meeting, either someplace in a southernly direction or at a lower elevation, like going to a valley from a mountain. Now a search reveals that someone has tried to change it into something dirty. I guess the world has changed and I'm no longer hep.

“fajitas are good too. It's mainly seared steak, onions, and bell peppers. You put them on tortillas with lettuce and pico de gallo. Pico is diced onions, tomatoes, cilantra (an herb), and some other things.”

Right afterwards, Thinkbubelz & I went to a football game. I think I drank a whole bottle of pepto bismol and felt it burning a hole in my digestive system all day!!!

“Sounds like you had a great time. A few things about Texas - "Dinner" is lunch time and "supper" is the evening meal down here. Mexican food is not spicy like skiracer said, it's the tex mex stuff that gets racey. Not all Mexican food has beans in it..I should know cuz I hate beans! Try fajitas - they aren't just steak, try the chicken, they're really good. Quesidillas are good too and you can make they anyway you like. Oh, if you like Y'all as your favorite word, you should try alla y'all - that's plural!!

Anyway, glad you liked your visit to the Republic of Texas, Y'all come back now, y'ear?
