after you backpack to the cliff face you can climb to the top, once there you can either:

basejump, ski down or rappel.

please choose your next challenge

hmm...I think I choose to rappel. Thank you very much. Basejump? hmm... NOPE!!!

Now that I think about it...don't I get the choice of para-gliding/sailing?? I think that would be fun. If I get a sherpa who carries my para glider. heeheehee

I would love to try this once. I did over the ocean once, but it's no rush because you don't really do anything but sit there.

anyway, I looked at the granite gear pack today! Now you guys post it a sale. Hmm... I think I still am getting the ULA P2, it's larger, and I need a larger, but lighter pack. Only reason why I don't have the ULA yet is because I am having a hard time picturing all my gear in this pack. I can't see fitting almost 5000 cu in of gear into this pack.

Gem - that Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone for $119 might work for you. It's designed for 30-40 pound loads. The shoulder straps and the bumps on the front of your shirt may conflict, but what do I know about fitting women into packs.

gem, i have the ozone (the one stove mentions above), next time we hike together i can bring it along and use my other pack if you'd like to try it out.

We also ordered the Golite Coal from NMS a couple of weeks ago (along with about 7 other golite women's items) and Cheri used it for the first time this past weekend in Hoosier Natl Forest. The night temps got down into the 30's and she loved it (she had just her capilene top on under the coat). She also used the Flow jacket, Chi vest, and those super puffy Full Moon pants and loved them all.

Found a really cool item at my local Whole Foods store-- it's a small, personal-sized French coffee press by Bodum:

I was on their site, and apparantly, they carry a mini version as well!

My mug (the bigger one) is plastic, and great for making about a small amount of coffee... :-)

have no idea what it weighs, but it works very well when you don't want to make a whole pot of coffee!

Just don't keep the coffee in with the grounds... don't want to overextract your beans!

Wal Mart:
Starter 100wt fleece pullover with stand up collar and 1/4 length zipper. Mens size M weighs 9.5oz. $9. I highly recommend a 100wt top to those of you who don't have one... very versitile.

pink, I had that thing. It didn't work well at all. No matter how coarse the grounds it would get in coffee. Yuck! I can take a little grounds, but not that much!
Maybe mine was defective.

Ruby, that would be awesome. Prolly the best way to find out. I never take my gear to the store, which I should do though. :(

Thanks!!

I didn't buy it yet, but it's definitely something I want to check out.

Not techincally a "gear find," but a discovery.

I wanted to bring some cajun seasonings with me to cook with this weekend. There is a breath freshener on the market now called Ice Breakers Liquid Ice that come in a little plastic case. When the container is empty, you can pop off the top and fill it with exactly 1 teaspoon of seasonings. It's weight is negligible.

Yes, and besides, the nice thing about it is that you can also use it as just a mug to hold hot water or other liquids!

Pixie, I haven't had the problem of too many grounds--I get a few, but not enough to bother me.

I think you just have to be careful to wait a few minutes to let them settle before plunging the filter down.... (I got impatient once ande started pushing down the filter without making sure that the cap was properly screwed on and that the filter wasn't tilted. That's the only time I got a lot of grounds in my coffee.... As long as I'm careful about how the filter is situated, I don't seem to have that problem...

It's also nice because it fits in the cup holder in my car nicely as well!

DDX you hypocrite! You are the one who told me it was a piece of crap!

Well pink, I wish you continued success with it.

Stovie, I didn't have my press for backpacking. It was for at work. The people that make the coffee at work would use twice the coffee grounds and brew sludge and I couldn't stand the stuff. They wouldn't let us have our own machines, so I thought that press was the way to go.

please explain french press...
the jetboil thing is a french press or just a piece of junk to make coffee??

I thought a french press is the complete setup, the pot, the press and all. THAT I don't like. But heck yeah...I take something with me to make coffee, be it a filter, or the jetboil thingy.

am I not getting it? what are you all talking about??

Folgers singles weigh next to nothin', and take up no room in your pack. More "gadgets" mean more weight. I don't get the whole press thing. I'll save the weight for a plady filled with booze...Booyaa!!! ;-)

Grr!
My new parka is NOT coming by Friday as they had told me 3 day shipping would result in. I sent them a complaint email. (I was polite, just told them I was bummed and I had to make arrangements to borrow stuff for my trip because their customer service guy gave me incorrect info on shipping.)
I had also ordered a foam sleeping pad to subsidize my Thermarest. Won't have that either.

Thanks Nigal. Okay...so it is the complete set then. that's actually how I make most of my coffee at home. Either a press or with a regular filter on top of a cup. I don't use the coffee machine anymore.

Hey a good cup of coffee is worth the xtra weight, that's all I got to say!

i wanna see the day when there is a GOOD down sleeping bag on sale that's in the minuses, like minus 20 or more. Never gonna happen, at least I don't see it.

Woo Hoo!
Good thing I kept checking the tracking on my order. My stuff is in Seattle as we speak! So I called FedEx and told them I needed my stuff by tomorrow. They think if it doesn't make it on a truck for delivery tomorrow that I can just go pick up my stuff. Hooray! They will know either way tomorrow at 9am.

3 cheers for Fed Ex! hip hip! HOORAY! hip hip! HOORAY! hip hip! HOORAY!

Look at the stress they've caused me. Plus if it doesn't make it onto a truck for delivery tomorrow, I have to drive 20 miles round trip out of my way the night before my trip to go get it. I think Northern Mountain Supply is still in the dog house.

at walgreens the other day in one of those big aisle baskets, they had little fleece slipper things. really lightweight fleece. Only 1.99.

I grabbed a pair to wear in the sleepy bag and liked them. They'll also keep the toes warm around the house and such. Can't wear them outside there's no "sole" on them. Its kinda like a sock.

I love American Science and Surplus. They have the neatest stuff. Right now they are having a sale on some stuff. Related to backpackers right now:
- loose white LEDs if you are the type to build your own stuff, $.95 each, normally $1.50 (they also have a pack of 10)
- glow sticks (all colors) if you happen to use them for camping, $1.00 each, normally $1.25 (bright orange is more)
- insulite type camping mats, $5.50 each, normally $6.50
