SELMA - Alice Mehaffey's dance moves at a talent show won't cost her the principal position at Selma Middle School.
[...]
Some community members were outraged by Mehaffey's dress and behavior. Mehaffey wore short shorts, was picked up by a male student, was handcuffed by a male student pretending to be a police officer and tore the T-shirt off a male student during an encore of the songs "YMCA" and "Macho Man."

Mehaffey could not be reached for comment. She also serves as assistant superintendent of the school corporation.

Selma resident Bonnie Swingley said she hopes Mehaffey has learned a lesson from the incident. Swingley's granddaughter attends Selma Middle School.

"Everybody makes a mistake, but that was really so seductive to the kids," Swingley said.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (AP) -- Serial bomber Eric Rudolph, who pleaded guilty to avoid a possible death sentence, may have had a better chance than he realized to beat the rap, according to a new book by one of his victims.

The account by Emily Lyons says federal prosecutors staged four mock trials as they prepared for his trial in the bombing of a Birmingham abortion clinic -- and Rudolph was acquitted in three of them.

Lyons says in the book she co-authored, "Life's Been a Blast," that the mock juries failed to convict Rudolph because someone felt the victims "got what they deserved because they worked at an abortion clinic."

"I couldn't believe that they would let this guy go," Lyons said in an interview with The Associated Press.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 22-year-old man faces criminal charges in Nebraska for having sex with an underage 13-year-old girl, although he legally married her in Kansas after she became pregnant.

The man's lawyer said the couple, with their families' support, "made a responsible decision to try to cope with the problem."

Matthew Koso, 22, was charged Monday with first-degree sexual assault, punishable by up to 50 years in prison. He was released on $7,500 bail pending an Aug. 17 preliminary hearing.

After the girl became pregnant, her mother gave permission in May for Koso to take the young woman to Kansas, which allows minors to get married with parental consent. The girl is now 14 and seven months pregnant.

"The idea ... is repugnant to me," said Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning. "These people made the decision to send their ... 14-year-old daughter to Kansas to marry a pedophile."

I thought we were number two after Wisconsin! Hey things are getting alittle better around Michigan. It'll probably get worse again though, Golden Corral just came to the state.

That's a pretty nifty link. It's interesting to compare the spending and rates of disease in your state.

(9/19/05 - MUNCIE, IN) - Residents of a southwest Muncie neighborhood thought the 110-year-old former school with purple doors had been vacant these past 14 months. So neighbors were surprised to find out the building which was last used as a bingo hall is home to one of Indiana's seven swingers clubs.

"I thought it was empty, to tell you the truth," Mary Neal, who rents a house across from the club, told The Star Press. "That shocks me. I'm just floored. There are a lot of kids that walk around here."

Swinging involves having social and sexual intercourse with someone other than a spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend. It primarily involves couples.
[...]
The club is open two days a week and has pool tables, a dance floor, a six-person hot tub, a multiple-person shower and "sensually designed theme rooms," according to its Web site.

Klub Layden is open Friday and Saturday nights, and advises its members to bring their own alcohol and contraception. The club provides sheets, bathrobes and locker rooms.

An annual membership costs $25 for couples and single men and $20 for single women.

Members must agree to not identify others or their experiences at the club, without permission.

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP - A late-night bar fight last month could lead to charges against three Butler County Republican Party members, according to the Butler County Sheriff's Office

Central Committee Chairman Quentin Nichols of West Chester Township, Executive Committee member Sean Maloney of Liberty Township, and Central Committee member Timothy Dearwester of Liberty Township allegedly assaulted a bartender at Putter’s Tavern & Grill at 6575 Cincinnati-Dayton Road about 12:15 a.m. Oct. 26, according to a complaint a bartender filed with the sheriff's office.
[...]
The bartender told police when he approached the trio about a damaged advertising sign in the men's room, it led to an altercation after one of the men made sexual remarks about the female owner of the bar, according the report.

After he told the men to leave, "All three males got on top of him, punching and hitting him with a chair," an officer said the bartender told him.

The men continued the brawl outside, where a bench was broken. The damage of the sign and bench totaled $500, according to the report. The bartender sustained minor injuries.

The three men drove off in Nichols' Hummer, leaving Nichols' credit card behind, before police, according to authorities.

Neither the three GOP members, nor the bartender, could be reached for comment Monday.

Charity begins in the red
The charity index shows who gives and who can afford to give. I don't think any of the red state people are surprised by the list.

You mean surprised that they all rank last in the "having" category? Maybe those in the Blue states actually "have" more so they don't need more. And maybe they have more because they value education, community, libraries, etc.

If you want to brag about and keep giving through your "charity" (in which the majority of funds go toward running the darn thing), go ahead, pat yourself on the back. I'll continue to give through taxes that provide programs that keep people out of need. No need for a pat on the back here, to me it's because I actually give a damn about my neighbor, and view him/her as equal to myself.

good reply, SS.

"Incidentally, the Catalogue welcomes the news that the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College will conduct, with Boston Foundation funding, a thorough scientific study of charitable giving in relation to wealth in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, and New England, all in comparison with other regions of the country. Since 1997 when we first introduced the Generosity Index as, in our words, “crude but telling,” not as science but only as information for public-awareness purposes, a summary of the best available data on giving in relation to income, we have repeatedly called upon the academic community to provide better numbers — the rigorous data and analysis philanthropy needs. We therefore await the results of the BC study with great interest and grateful enthusiasm." --Catalogue for Philanthropy

Poor and lower middle class people have always been more charity minded.
I've seen this first hand at work during the United Way drives.
The lowest paid people give way more than the highest paid.

Of course I'm talking about the working poor.

I myself received many hot meals from The Salvation Army after the hurricane flooded my house.
And just for you libbies, I know this is your main concern with the Salvation Army, no religious talk was included.

My donations to the SA thru the Unitied Way will increase greatly this year and I urge you others to consider them as well.
They were the first here. Long before the Red Cross peeked in.
StoveStomper

I also give money to the Salvation Army - they are cost effective and go where the need is.

I'm certainly not at odds with the notion that people who have had to struggle financially are more generous with their money. I put a few struggling souls to work helping me paint my house and find out that while they have work, and I was surprised to see how generous they were with other people.

I don't know how relevant either version of the Philanthropic index is. I don't see what the Philanthropic causes are that are being given to: are they political, religious, educational, or???. I also don't know who it is in each state that is donating the money.

Catalogue for Philanthropy has repeatedly called upon the academic community to provide better numbers — the rigorous data and analysis philanthropy needs.

Do the numbers confuse you? Have you read the report? BC is a religious organization and the report was welcomed and called for by Catalogue for Philanthropy. As soon as you hear the facts you say, "oh no, my poor little head cannot handle all the number".

Maybe this will spurn you to argue fact. I doubt it.
