whats the best backpack stove

“PocketRocket when it's warm, super light, super easy to use, good flame control, boils water fast.

Dragonfly when it's cold, great flame control, tons of heat output, loud enough to scare the #&%!$ outta other hikers :)”

Whisperlight- worthless.

Sierra Zip- cool but takes some work.

Optimus R8- good for paddling trips but never hiking.

Optimus 99- great stove. One of my favorites but still heavy.

Esbit- love it for warmer weather.

Trangia alcohol stove- Also love this when it's warm out.

Pocket Rocket- the work horse for all but the coldest trips.

Svea 123- Great for winter trips. bit of work to prime and warm up but once it goes...”

“I always use the HEET in the yellow bottle. Last time all they had was the red bottle and I thought, "What's the difference?". Big difference! The flame was out of control. My windscreen was melted and it got EVERYTHING gawdaweful black and dirty. And I don't worry about dirty black pots much.”

“I have a whisperlight international. Great stove. I also have an optimus nova, it is too loud and not as hot as my whisperlight. I carry an esbit stove for winter dayhikes.

Alcohol stoves suck.”

“Camping Gaz - really old first stove. Still have 2-3 canisters so I guess they will get used some day. Easy to use but does not work well at altitude, does not work well in wind, never know how much fuel left and if cooking something that takes 10 minutes canister will fail at 8 minutes ... ALWAYS.

Simon alcohol stove, heavier than pepsi can but more robust and less likely to get damaged, good pot stand. No brainer to use, super quick, pour fuel click lighter. No so good at freezing temps or below.
3 season favorite.

SVEA 123 - for cold weather of high altitude trips. As Nigal stated a little fiddly and slow to start then it roars. A snow melter that also has a reasonable simmer.”

I got a simmer lite that replace my whisper lite international. I love the new stove. I also have a pocket rocket that I use when the temps are favorable, but on colder trips I bring the simmer lite. I usually dont worry about the weight, cause I have my dog, Khatru carry it in his pack for me. He doesn't know that and if you tell him, I'll piss on your tent.”

Here about 2 minutes, Yellowstone about 2.5 I'd say. Never really timed it though. I like the starter also.

“I've used the MSR XGK for years. Great stove, just the sound of it will warm you up. And you never have to wonder if the wind blew the flame out.
I recently bought a Brunton Crux. It's going to be fun to test it out on the trail. It is light and has the best flame control I've seen.”
