A friend gave what look to be an older North Face tent. I haven't even opened it yet because of the moldy odor... I don't really know if it is worht keeping until I get it cleaned up. Therein lies my question: What is the best way to clean this tent without damaging the material? Would cleaning it with a bleach solution be a bad move? I'm just not sure... any advice would help. Thanks

bleach is bad, it takes away the waterproofness, open it ,set it up, then clean it with water and a bar of soap, then, take a blowdrier, and blow it dry

You can use a weak bleach solution. Then wash the tent in a washing machine with no agitator.

when in doubt...
call Northface. you can find them on the web, very easily...and I wouldn't put a tent in the washing machine...you risk tearing fabric in the agitator...

and...who the heck are you anyway...are you a girl? If so, do you taste as good as applesauce does? I like cinnamon sprinkled on my applesauce, does that sound good to you???? wanna go backpacking with me (that is if your a girl? I promise, I only bite a little.

There's several threads already about cleaning tents and other gear. Just do a search of the archive you'll find lots of good information.

The whole applesauce thing came from a friend who doesn't like to talk on the trail... and I tend to run my mouth and drive him crazy. So he started calling me M.O.T.T.(s) applesauce, meaning "Mouth of the Trail". No, I am a boring(according to my kids) Dad. So go pour some cinnimon on someone else...

anyone here have the Hex 2 by Golite. Do you use the pole or clip a carabiner on the top and use a tree limb to hold it up.

ok on the right thread now..lol

As far as tents are concerned... What do y'all think about the MSR Missing Link? I've had my eye on that one.

Dub owns a couple of Missing Links and brought them to Titanium Chef IV. Looks like a good shelter, a decent combination of a tarp's weight savings and a tent's protection.

Oh, my Gawd! 7 810 000 entries for Cialis in 0,13 seconds. How's that for getting it up?

LOL on the applesause calling...
no, I don't take cialis. don't need male enhancement drugs...only a female participant.

and the only boring people are the ones that think that there are boring people in the world. Everyone is interesting in their own way. I'm sure you are interesting too.

I have 2 older North Face tents and if the tent is really old it may be likely the waterproof coating is no good despite the mold. The coatings on mine degraded, but haven't peeled. Before you invest any time or money in the tent I would check it for waterproofness. If it fails that test just junk it because there's no really reliable way to duplicate the original coatings.

TRy cleaning the tent with one of those cheap plastic garden sprayers you can buy at Home Depot. Fill it with water and some mild "Woolite" type soap, then spray it on the tent. Rub it a little with a soft cloth at heavily soiled spots if needed. Then simple rinse off and let dry.

BTW - do you know what type of old North Face tent it is? I have and old Westwind (a tunnel style tent)that was in the back of a closet for about 8 years. I set it up in my yard and it still looks like it could stand up to a good winter squall. Little heavy a 5.5 lbs.

I have a TNF Westwind tent too. Mine is a 1987 model. The fly is still waterproof, but the floor isn't. The coating looks OK, but doesn't keep water out if it pools under the tent.
