I also, on second thought, note that the guy who said this was the organizer for the Nazi's.

It's really unclear exactly what happened, but it sounds like both the Nazis and one or more organized ultra-left groups that feed off of fights with the Nazis - went there looking for trouble. Nothing tells me what set off the rioting, or if it was locals or ultra-lefts bussed in from all over who were rioting. I see on the "One People" website that they are already making plans to confront a Nazi rally in April, 2006.

Perhaps the locals (esp. the gang members the Mayor blamed) or the police contributed to the problems (as suggested in the article), but it seems like they got caught up in a fight between two bands of organized fringe fanatics who can pretend they are relevant through their fights with each other. Maybe there was some opportunistic looting?

I checked the Mayor's home page, not only is he a Democrat, he is black. The Chief of police seems to be a white Hispanic (I could be wrong on that one). It's ahrd to blame the White Republican establishment for this one.

I blame the Nazis, the Ultralefts and anyone else who rioted. As far as I can tell the city establishment were just trying to obey court rulings about respecting free speech rights and keep the peace. They probably had no experience with these fanatics on both sides that wanted violence.”
