Hi Geobeet, how have you been! I finished school for the summer and have been reading up on peoples' adventures for the year. It sounds like you have a very nice trip planned. I won't be able to go but I hope that you all have a great time.

I like school, I may even be able to perform venipuncture on you all just for practice the next trip out, how would that be? With lots of gloves of course!

I haven't been hiking in ages, that is my confession for the day. School was Sooooooooo stressful.

Hey bitpusher, just kidding, I actually still get squeamish at the sight of blood. But nursing school makes you so much more paranoid. They told us the other day that 34% of the US population has had hepatitis B or C. We all were looking around at each other in shock. I realized that I hadn't researched water filter issues in a few years. A few years ago they were saying that there wasn't a virus problem in US water creeks. I hope that is still the case.

I was just joking with you, Lyndy. Puncture away!

A friend of mine's dad was in the hospital a few years ago. The nurse came in to change the IV or something like that, that exposed her to his blood. She was not following universal blood safety precautions, i.e., no gloves. My friend is a former EMT and Rescue Squad member. He looked at her and asked "Will this affect my father's Hepatitis C?" His father does not have Hep C.

He said the nurse damn near fainted. I'm guessing she will wear gloves from now on.

Nigal, just make a plate of ribeyes, you don't need to make one for each attendee. Everyone can take a small cut. Last year I made cut up fruit and veggies and brownies. Someone will need to take this on since I will be incognito taking all the embarrassing photos ..... oh I mean completely absent, minding my own business in NJ.

I did a mapquest search, but didn't know whether to trust their times. I live in Wilmington, NC and I know it takes me around 4 hours to get to Richmond. Mapquest reported it would take me 9+ hours to get to Elkins. So its probably closer to 8 hours

It's about 5 hours from Baltimore.

Pssssst, Hyway, don't be fooled by Mapleleaf's calling it a "Family Camping Trip" They are all a lot of fun, but don't bring the kidlets unless they are sound sleepers. They could hear Mapleleaf at Niagara Falls, at least eight counties from Ithaca.

Sorry you won't make it.

Allie won't make it either, as it turns out. She has reached the age where staying away from spiders has more import than being with Grandpa.

I got all the venipuncture I wanted in my two bouts with cellulitis last year. I kept asking them what they were doing with the stuff ... drinking it? Jeez, before a cup of coffee even, there were the ghouls. "Ve have come for your blood ..."
Geobeet

Geobeet, tell Allie that Tara and Lydia say Hi!

And you had cellulitis twice!!! last year? You and I need to talk. That is bad news. Are you doing all the things that the doctor told you to prevent recurrances? I've seen some bad stuff in the hospital that you want to avoid at all costs. Seriously you want to keep hiking to improve circulation but you need to treat any break in the skin in a very aggressive way to prevent any infection. We used to think that fresh air was good for healing wounds but now we know that bandages are better, so cover cuts, scrapes etc. but check frequently for signs of infection. Keep that antibacterial gel with you always, and of course wash hands with soap frequently. Use gel whenever shaking hands or touching stuff like a grocery cart. Often it is from a reduced immune system that can't ward off bacteria that the rest of us live with everyday, like streptococcus. Cellulitis is very common so it isn't like I'm saying that you are messed up, just that you want to be very vigilant. Take Vit C time release and zinc to boost immunity of skin.

Yes, Lyndy, they found out that the cellulitis was linked to venostasis that resulted from the broken leg. The circulatory system got messed up in the ankle.

They have me wearing support hose (not support ho's), and that seems to have helped out a lot.

I was in the hospital over Memorial Day weekend, then Labor Day weekend. The medical staff kept asking, "What are you doing back here?"

"I figured you guys missed me, so I had to find a way to get back," is what I told them.

On the first trip the pain was so bad they ended up giving me Percoset. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, ... Percoset!

Yeah percocet good. I used to bring them on backpacking trips in case someone seriously got injured or I broke a nail, but I gave them to my husband when he had shingles so I have nothing better than a muscle relaxer for my hikes now. Doctors are very tight with these drugs, I can't imagine why.

I never even heard of deep vein thrombosis until you had it and now several of my friends have had it while having minor surgery like kidney stone removal and stuff. Weird. Those support hose things are recommended to all nurses to wear since they are on their feet all the time. I don't really understand, if you are on your feet all the time and running around, I thought that that was good exercise. Seems to be good for hikers. But apparently causes weakened veins and such. So raise your legs during hiking breaks everyone!
