Big Bend is one mile from Jess Judy. We can drive to Big Bend to haul water and probably organize trips to save time.

The South Branch flows right by the campground, just yards away.

That picture is taken during high flow in the spring. It will not be that high unless it rains a lot the week before we go (not likely).

The river near our campground can be what we want it to be, but there are kids in this trip so their parents should have some say about skinny dipping. Don't know that local fishermen might be working through the area during the daytime either.

But there should be a place to get good and wet. There are cow pastures upstream, so it is not good drinking water. I don't think any harm would come from just swimming and getting wet though.

im ok with that, i think being able to go into the water and cool off after a day of hiking will feel very good.

There is Seneca Caverns and Smoke Hole Caverns. There is Seneca Rocks. There is Spruce Knob, and there are Seneca Creek, Dolly Sods, Roaring Plains, and North Fork Mountain to hike.

If someone wants to make an hour drive, there are the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Cass Scenic Railroad. In Durbin there is another tourist railroad, and along Shavers Fork there is another rail tour available. I will have information available about all of that.

At Petersburg there is a small Civil War fort.

There is a National Park Service visitor center at Seneca Rocks, where they sell topographic maps, forest maps, and books about the history of the area, nature, and kid stuff.

The Harpers Country Store at Seneca Rocks has scads of gift and souvenir items.

They are about equidistant. Caving it's not. These are commercial caves that run guided tours.

Lets go to the dolly sods!

Hey, what do the temps run this time of year at night. I have to decide which of my 7 bags I should take.

It's not likely to be any cooler than 60 at night.

Smoke Hole Cavern sucks donkey dung.
I took my boys there ten years ago.
They have what must be the world's cheesiest gift shop.....total crapola.

A drive to Seneca Rocks is worth it.
There is a hike to the top of less than one mile and that is very cool.

From Seneca Rocks it is a little over ten miles, up a dirt road, to Spruce Knob the highest point in West Virginny.

There is an observation deck with views of everythang up there.

Even a cripple could bag Spruce Knob.

I was there at Red Creek campground last weekend at sod fest. I filled my nalgene bottles there, the water was cloudy so I did filter the water even though it came from the campground well. If hiking throughout the Sods you use a miniworks or cermic filter you will notice the filter will clog up very fast due to tannin in the water. I noticed the backpackers using the hiker pro had better results and the filter lasted much longer.

My thermometer on my pack said at one time 52 degrees, I believe prosecutor said it got to 49 degrees actually.

Marko is correct in that seneca rocks visitors center is worth it, and also the hike to the top. At the visitors center you can pick up a free small Dolly Sods map booklet that has all current trails. I did look at the topos they had 1995 sets and they were not up to date with trails. I highly recommend the free booklet.

What are the plans, if any for dinner on Friday. I know pizza was consumed last year. Are we planning on sort of the same thing this time as well?

I can bring hot dogs if we are interested and cook them on the grill I am bringing. (the same grill I will be using to cook my dish that put all the rest of your sorry ass dishes to shame)

Let me know.
