Rocky Mtn New Year

“Anyone interested in New Years Eve in Rocky Mtn National Park?

I think I'm gonna try for an overnighter or two that weekend.”

“Hey Roam....not sure what my trip will bring...but as of now I plan to be in the Denver area from after Christmas through New Year's....but have to be back in TN on the 2nd so probably out on the New Year's backcountry thing...Are you living in Denver or a suburb of Denver? My friend lives in Littleton so that is probably where I will be staying.”

“I'm up north of Denver in Loveland. Let me know if your plans change or something. I don't have any vacation time yet so I can't do anything except on the weekend.”

“Man I'd love to make this trip. I even looked up flights from here, St. Louis and Chicago, but I just can't swing the flight money.”

“Hmmmmm...we'll keep an eye out on this one.”

“Sounds good to me - I was just talking with some folks at work about boarding yesterday.”

“I have a feeling that the CO Gang from the "other" side might have something in the works also... keep an eye out.

What days do you have off over the holidays Roam?”

“I get Christmas Day off, (yeah Saturday) and New Years Day, (another Saturday)

LOL, I might get to take off the Fridays before, if we catch a break at work.”

“U still going? And if so where to?”

“Yes!! A guy from the other side is going too. We're starting at Bear Lake on Friday morning.

“Not sure...

We have no tent at this point...

Where do you plan on making camp?”

“Mill Creek Basin and Fern Lake, in that order, Fri night and Sat night.

Gonna drop a car at the Fern Lake / Cub Lake parking area, adn the other at Bear Lake.

“Dang, I wish I could have made this trip. My first backpacking trip into the Rockies took me to Mill Creek Basin.”

“talked to the backcountry rangers today - gave us a green light on the route planned - no perceived avalanche risk as of now. Will check back in on Friday before starting out, but so far so good!

Woo HOO! Got gear scattered all over the living room!

And yes, my hiking partner for this trip is from THE OTHER SIDE!

“Thats cool Adventurist, there'll be LOTS more trips. I've been looking at the maps at all the secluded lakes I want to visit this summer when the snow clears off some of the routes.”

“going above treeline roam? have you ever been above treeline?”

“if the weather is ok, we're gonna try for a summit on Flattop Mtn (12,324), other than that we might be close to tree line, but not above for any period of time.

If the weather is like it was today, we probably won't make the summit attempt - its been snowing in the Park for a full day now.

Predicitons are for good weather, but you know what thats like.

I've been above before, but it was a long long time ago.

we just gotta pick a destination now - and decide how much champagne we'll need.”

“I need to get photos out to you and Don from colorado. I look at those photos and go ...holy cow...that was alot of snow. I particularly like my photo of the snow cave I made for the stove at our first camp site. I can't believe we snowshoed SOOOO far that first day, and got nowhere...that's funny.”

“My camera went kaput - it got damp inside and everything is all foggy, I'd love to get a cd with your pics if you get a chance to do so.”
