“Hey Y2 once you get settled plan a trip. I've never been to Maine. Sounds like a great place to escape the heat of summer.”

“Y2 ~ we are usually up there a couple of times in the summer. I'll let you know when we head that way. :) You should come to our cottage for some lobster and beer. It's only about an hour from Portland on the coast.

Practice saying "Ayuh!" and you'll be fine. ;)


PS...Bateauxdriver ~ it would be great to see you again! Are you planning any more trips up this way?

Hey lilmountaingirl, I don't have anything planned right now but I'm game for anything. I was looking over the 100-Mile Wilderness trip in the fall but I'm not sure how much vacation I'll have left by then. I'd really love to see you guys again. I'll be with part of the Mid-Atlantic crew on Mt. Elbert in just a few weeks. I can't wait.

“Do you have a Husky or Malamute? Both? Same thing? Someone here has Malamute pups for 100 bucks each. Not sure if it is a reputable breeder or not but it seemed like a decent price. I thought I remember you as having one and I wondered how they took to training? Can they handle living indoors?

“I do. I have both.

They're fantastic dogs. Super smart - and actually do fairly well indoors as they can be pretty lazy.

They do share a lot of traits with other sled dogs though - and they can have some strong Alpha tendencies - so you have to watch those. They can also get v large.

They will have a strong prey instinct and the neighbors cats could be at risk.

They don't train as well as some other dogs as they are strongly independent. They know that you want them to do something, but sometimes don't see the point in doing it.

They do like to wander and you're going to struggle to have them as off-leash dogs

They will leave your yard looking like the surface of the moon.

They will howl at passing sirens. Funny at first, but not so cool when you live in DC and sirens are going off every five minutes.

They don't bark.

They're generally poor guard dogs as they like strangers (their nomadic history meant they'd meet a lot of strangers).

They're not pacifists and often have issues with other dogs if they try and alpha them.

But overall, they are so much smarter than most other dogs out there and just seem to have more personality that your average lab. In many ways it's more like having a friend than a pet.

There are some issues with them. The daycare place mine went to in DC were a bit wary at first, but he's got such a personality that everyone there was fawning over him in short order. It was also quite cool to see him lording it over the 50 or so other dogs there.”

“They are pretty impressive dogs (sound a lot like my Rottie) and I've always wanted to own one, but I think "we" just decided that it's not what we want, lol. I kid, of course. Tarabull and I want to create a small team of sled dogs and I was hoping for a malamute to be one of our first, but Tara wants to try it with all adopted dogs. We'll see how it goes. “I knew a girl in the '70s who had a pair of male malamutes from a litter.

They were very friendly and playful.

Eventually they had to be split up after raiding a chicken house or two in the rural area of Liberty Town, Maryland west of here.

Together they were double trouble and freakin' huge!”

“MarkO, we went to a presentation last night about dogsledding and the presenter brought her lead dog: only 34 lb! It was just a tiny little malamute! Didn't even come up to my knees.”
