I was looking at getting a Cabela's Alaskan 6, that would be more of a base/family multi-use tent, but I am thinking about going for a backpacking tent instead?

What are some suggestions for 2/3 Person with some extra space? would you ever get a 4 person backpacking one in case of inviting others?

IMHO, no...if four people were going I would think at least two tents

depends on if its "family/car camping" or not.

If its backpacking, I'd split the load and go with two tents for four people.

Definitely two tents. I prefer two tents for more than three people even when car camping. Four people getting up at night to answer the call of nature, the snoring, the stink, the gear. You have to be pretty good friends with four people to share a tent. If romance is an option, it can get stiffled in a crowd.

gearfinder.com is a good place to start comparing options.

When in a similar situation, needing a family tent and a backpacking tent for 2-3, I got a couple of Stretch Domes by Sierra Designs. Sierra Trading Post had a good price at the time. They are bombproof 4 season tents, easy to set up and roomy for two adults with room for gear and a good vestibule. You can put in one adult and two kids of various sizes. I've seen it not budge in gale force winds.

If two people split the weight, not unreasonable for backpacking.
