This needs a thread all it's own!

I love all types of foods from everywhere. I like the wierd hillbilly food like squirrel, rattle snake, alligator, and frog legs. I also love Chinese food too. That General Tso was a great man I'm sure! Probably my favorite is Italian.

I make a mean set of meat balls. The secret is to use 50/50 lean ground beef and ground pork. I put all kinds of spices in them and roll them in italian bread crumbs and then brown them just enough to give them a bit of a crust. Drain and bake at 350 for 45 minutes, drain again, smother them in sauce and top with grilled red, green, yellow peppers and carmelized onions and then cheese on top with just a pinch of parsly and basil on top. They're cream your jeans good!

I don't eat too much lamb. There is a place in Ann Arbor called The Parthanon that has the BEST gyroes. So big and overstuffed ya have cucumber dressing running down to your elbows. I think that was the last time I had lamb.

I'm not into the Indian food. Never liked the curry or the peanut sauce.

I wish we had a good soul food place around here. I love collered greens.

It's funny that what folks up north call soul food is just meat and three down here.

The Whistle Stop Cafe in Irondale, AL (the place that Fannie Flag based the restaurant on in Fried Green Tomatoes) has great fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra, and collards. Top that off with some sweet tea and it's good stuff.

Nigal, I thought you didn't like Indian food? Oops, wrong Indians. Seriously though, it's pretty interesting to read about Lewis and Clark and how they'd barter for horses for food. It seems like that was a common food for the Native Americans. Our hangup now is, to paraphrase Pul Fiction, "....horse has a personality, personality goes a long way."

Nigal, we find common ground on another rare occasion.

I love Italian food. It's got to be my favorite. Although I am a sucker for good Chinese food, too.

Gee, I wonder if Mutt likes Chinese food! :)

If it's one thing I've always wanted to do TreeB is to come to NYC and get a big slice, fold it over, and stuff the whole thing in my face at once! The food must be the best there. I'd also like to try the kosher chinese food too.

Lewis and Clark's favorite food was dog. Seriously.

My favorite ethnic food is Middle Eastern food. We have so many wonderful MiddleEastern restaurants around here, my favorite being one called La Shish. Lamb and Lima, Swarma, hummous, baba ganoush, grape leaves, tabouli, baclava, I love it all. The only thing I haven't tried is the kibbe . I'm afraid to eat raw meat, except for sushi.

Thai - Pad Pak or Pad Thai are my favorites.

Gemini - You'll have to teach me about German food with my BF in Frankenmuth, America's "Little Bavaria". I learned what schnitzel was a few weeks ago, I'm basically afraid of everything else.

Capers
Capers of commerce are immature flower buds which have been pickled in vinegar or preserved in granular salt. Semi-mature fruits (caperberries) and young shoots with small leaves may also be pickled for use as a condiment.
Capers have a sharp piquant flavor and add pungency, a peculiar aroma and saltiness to comestibles such as pasta sauces, pizza, fish, meats and salads. The flavor of caper may be described as being similar to that of mustard and black pepper. In fact, the caper strong flavor comes from mustard oil: methyl isothiocyanate (released from glucocapparin molecules) arising from crushed plant tissues .

Capers make an important contribution to the pantheon of classic Mediterranean flavors that include: olives, rucola (argula, or garden rocket), anchovies and artichokes.

Tender young shoots including immature small leaves may also be eaten as a vegetable, or pickled. More rarely, mature and semi-mature fruits are eaten as a cooked vegetable. Additionally, ash from burned caper roots has been used as a source of salt.

Bit,

That's interesting-- I never knew what the capers were-- except that they were little, round and very salty... LOL :-) I've had them with lox and also with caviar... but they are a tad too salty for my palate...

Hard for me to pin down a particular favorite ethnic food....

I have so many favorites! (Does Ice Cream count?!)

As much as I like all kinds of ethnic food, I guess I gotta say that Mexican is my favorite by a long shot, followed by Italian and Chinese, which are about neck and neck. I also like German, Indian, Japanese, Greek, and Middle Eastern.

I feel sorry for people (like my wife) who have a limited palate. It must suck to only like one kind of food.

bit-- Thinkbubelz's brother-in-law used to make his wife cook a broiled chicken breast, and a potato EVERY DAY when they first got married (that's what his mom did his entire life!) His poor wife couldn't even make spaghetti, because he refused to eat it! Now that they have kids, however, I think he's finally broadened his palate a little, although, it is still pretty limited!

(I can't even imagine having the exact same meal every day of your life-- how boring!)

I've tried to get my wife to try new things. Typically what happens is when we go to a new restaurant, she will try things that she thinks she will like until she finds something she does like. Then she orders the same thing on every subsequent visit to the restaurant. Forever. Until the end of time (or the restaurant closes).

If I don't know the place, I'll go for Thai, Japanese, then Chinese (although there are still a lot of bad Chinese places out there.

It mostly depends on the restaurant. Around here, I go to Chinese more often than anything (because there is such a variety of good restaurants and of Chinese cuisines), Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, there is even a great Afghani restaurant near here (co-owner is Hamid Karzai's sister).

And then for the most exotic ethnic food, I often go redneck, and have me some collards, hush puppies and ribs. (speaking of regional, I really enjoy good Cajun food when I can get it).

Man - I miss having enough money to go out a lot!
