nowslimmer, thanks for posting that. I saved it to a new favorites folder. That looks like a good river to paddle

Winged Mapleleaf Mussels?

Should this worry me?

This would be right up in Matahari's neck of the woods, lucky chick that she is. :-)

Ole "Thimblefoot" is close, too

Treebeard
Yes, Treebeard, you should be worried. I admit that I copied that reference only because it mentioned mapleleaf. But, if this battle is lost, it will be because the Zebra Mussel is winning. And it could cause a lot of problems to your NY lakes, if it is not already doing so. A little information follows:

Endangered Species Facts

Federally endangered winged mapleleaf mussels cultured

Zebra Mussel Threats

"The Zebra Mussel Threatens Navigation and Boating"

"Credit: U.S. Geological Survey

Navigational buoys have been sunk under the weight of attached zebra mussels. The deterioration of dock pilings increases when they are encrusted with zebra mussels.

Continued attachment of zebra mussels can cause corrosion of steel and concrete, weakening structural integrity. "

Yup, I was raised on that river. We had more fun pulling those old canvas tents down to the river bottom, stealing a six pack of warm beer and a pack of someone's Dad's cigarettes AND a copy of Stag magazine (hot stuff: showed cleavage) and staying up all night. I think we were around 13 years old. What a way to grow up!

Yep, it was a pleasure to canoe a little on that river with you last June, Nimblefoot. I really enjoyed it.

Do you still have any of those magazines? They are probably worth some money today.

NS - we were on my 2nd favorite river, the Namekagon, which empties into the St. Croix at Lost Cabin Point. They are both really great, a slow leisurely float...if the wind isn't blowing you upstream. No, I don't have the magazines, but sure have fond memories of that era.
