Hey Pink
What kind of problems are you having with monitor calibration?
Indiana John

Hey IJ-- I think my problem is that I'm not sure HOW to calibrate it with my printer-- do I need to get that special calibrator thing (looks like a mouse)?

I tried using the info on photoshop and my MAC (G5), but not sure It's quite right-- the printouts on my Olympus P400 are usually much darker than what I see on my screen. and the colors aren't quite the same...

So, I've been turning the screen down (darker) to compensate, but not sure what I'm doing wrong....

Pink, really need to invest in a monitor calibrator...I'll look up a good economical one for you here in a minute. ..

The built in monitor optimizer program in Photoshop doesn't work worth a crap. Once you have your monitor optimized, then you build a profile for your printer (this takes a little tweaking and wastes a few sheets of paper) that you save for that specific paper. You should be able to very closely match the screen with the print.

If you're interested, I can send you a document that goes over this in more detail and kinda walks you through the process.

If you're printing on different papers you'll want to make a diff. profile for each paper.

Did you say you were using the Epson 2200? I think I have custome profiles already made for that printer that you can just drag and drop into Photoshop etc.

IJ.
Thanks for the help... I am new to this and self-taught in terms of the hardware & software....

I have the Olympus P400 (dye sublimation printer)
as well as a couple of HP injets (I think the 5100 and the 2120 or something like that--not at home, so I can't look it up at the moment.)

It seems like my laptop has a calibration mode for the screen, but I haven't figured out what else I need to do....

I kind of figured out that I need the Monitor calibrator--doesn't it look somewhat like a mouse? I think I've seen them in a catalogue before, but haven't a clue as to which ones to use....

The older ones worked fine too, you might be able to find one on ebay for cheap?

Hey, Pink

Here are a few snippits from a message board I'm on that you might find interesting.

You mention that you are using a laptop to edit your images. Keep in mind that the displays on most laptop computers are not adequate for photo editing. In particular, the limited viewing angle causes considerable problems. Slight changes in viewing angle can cause dramatic changes in apparent brightness, and this can have a significant impact on the actual adjustments you make to the images. I would strongly recommend using a desktop computer for photo editing if at all possible, or using an external CRT monitor connected to your laptop if that is possible.

When it comes to a laptop computer, the basic specification recommendations remain the same. You still want a processor that is just as fast as you would otherwise have, and you still want as much memory (RAM) and hard drive storage space as you would otherwise have. The major differences, as you pointed out, relate to video. The LCD displays used on most laptop computers are really not adequate for image editing. Besides the reduced contrast ratio and other factors, the viewing angle is a major problem. With most laptop displays, a slight change in viewing angle can make a huge difference in the relative brightness of the display. This causes considerable problems in making accurate adjustments to the image. So, while the laptop may be powerful enough to actually process your images, making accurate adjustments is a different story altogether. The only good solution to this is to connect an external monitor to your laptop and work from that display. For most users this would eliminate the original benefit of the laptop - portability.
The other issue with laptop computers is that there is often relatively small amounts of video memory. Provided there is 32MB or more of video memory, you'll have no problems at all with normal image editing. The only time having less video memory could be a problem is if you were viewing full-motion video.
A laptop is not an ideal platform for editing your photos, but you can make do with one if it is absolutely necessary in the field. If so, I would suggest that you only do minor editing, utilizing adjustment layers, so that you can revise those adjustments later when you move the images to a desktop computer.

As for calibrating your laptop display, that could be done with any of the tools for calibrating a monitor, such as the ColorVision Spyder package I recommend (www.colorvision.com). Of course, the calibration portion of the process is technically a matter of adjusting the monitor display to meet established standards, and that isn't possible with most LCD displays (particularly on a laptop). However, the profiling portion of the process still applies, and is something I strongly recommend doing. This won't guarantee an accurate display, but it will ensure you're using the right colors as a judgment for the images.

Wow, I will have to have Thinkbublez look at what you said about the Laptop... I'm not much of a hardware person-- (I probably could be, but I am too impatient and just want to get on with my artwork!--which is probably a bad thing-- I tend to throw out any manuals and just jump in, vs. trying to read a manual to learn about my programs... most of the things I've learned have either been from trial and error or from talking to online friends... :-)

I get an educator's discount, and I seem to recall hearing about the Spyder package, so I will check that out... :-) I'm really wary of getting any like that second hand on Ebay...would rather just pay the extra money to make sure that everything works okay --especially when it comes to technology... :-)
