Since i don't have the time to ski out west or East this year, a day in michigan will have to do. i was hoping some of the michigan hikers could help me pick a hill to visit.

This will get you started

I went to Caberfea peaks last year and it was nice for the price. just hoping someone on here has been to some of the hills and could recomend one. I think i'm leaning towards Nubs Nob right now.

Nubs Nob is a fun place to go, All the skiing in Michigan will be a bit of a let down compared to out west skiing but Boyne Mtn./Boyne Highlands are two other good choices Another option not to far away is Blue Mountain in Canada(5 hours from Detroit)

The problem with canada is i live in central illinois so while michigan skiing is 8 hour drive blue mountain would be 11-12 to far for a single day skiing. I liked caberfae but want to try Nubs or one of the Boyne hills. Aren't the Boyne's about 10$ more a day than Nubs Nob. I know michigan will be a let down compared to colorado or other locals, but a winter without skiing at all would be unbearable. Plus my skiing would be really rusty when i do make it out west again.

Details like comming from Illinois will limit the choices a little.
Try out either Nubs Nob or Boyne and they will be your best choice of hills in Michigan. But every ski hill has it's good points it depends on what you are looking for: mogels, steep walls, longer runs etc.
Usualy the lift ticket is the least expensive item so I don't pay attention to the price unless I am staying a few days.

I've been to Boyne and to Sugarloaf... Both were nice... of couse I'm closer to a beginning skier and am afraid of heights... (darned ski lifts!) LOL

If you want to spend a day on speed bumps (if you're used to out west) here are some in the lower peninsula:

Pine Knob
Mt. Holly
Mt. Brighton

:-) But, really, the ones up north are much more interesting to ski. :-)

Just looking for a hill that will have a terrain park and decent variety of terrain.
All of the areas you mentioned seem to provide that. Eveningred in your opinion, which of the places you mentioned has the most "difficult" terrain.

I learned to snowboard at Boyne. I think the hill won - I ended up pretty bruised!

Alpine Valley has the longest runs in Michigan. Not as beautiful as Boyne but you'll be on your skis longer there, much closer to Illinois too.

I saw a ski area near Houghton on the way to Isle Royale. That being said, I don't know how good it is or any other details...

That's Mt. Bohemia, isn't it? It's up in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Have you run the costs on this? An 8 hour drive would take two tanks of gas each way. Right now, that would probably be about 60 bucks each way. That's $120 RT. A plane ticket to Houghton is likely to be in the $200 range. Shoot a plane ticket to real mountains might be that much.

If you could line up a TTer to take you to the mountain and pick you up at the end of the day, you could probably fly.

i might have to look into a plane to salt lake city from bloomington, IL or Indianapolis, IN. now about a ride from the airport in SLC to alta or the canyons

Nub's Nob and Boyne Highlands (vs. Boyne Mountain) are my favorites.

Mt Bohemia is for EXPERIENCED skiers! If you can fly into Houghton County airport, I can pick you up and shuttle you. If I'm not mistaken, the ski hill might provide a shuttle also. If you ever consider it, my e-mail addy is in my profile. Just holler! :)

There is no direct flight from Detroit to Houghton. You have to go through Minneapolis.

There's also Mt. Ripley, just across from the MTU campus, right on the water. Nice hill, prolly not icy yet this year. I'm not a very good skier, so I've only been on one side of the hill, the "bowl". That's the part that gets icy.

I'm not sure, but I think my friend has flown from Lansing to Houghton....

I've never been to Alpine Valley.

I think the first place I skiied at was Mt. Holly.

I've pretty much gone to Mt. Brighton, when on a day trip and to Sugarloaf and the Boyne Mtns.... :-)

I hear that there's a place in Canada called the "Blue Mountain" as well, but never been there.
