180 huh? How high do you think 28 stories up is?

Well, I took my GPS into the elevator here when I got it (like a little kid with his toy) and it was around 370 feet up. That's 37 stories high. So, figure about 10 feet per flight??

That's the usual height between stories in most construction.

I thought a GPS needed clear view of at least 3 satellites. How would you get that in an elevator?

I don't know. I thought the same thing myself prior to using it. But, I had a blast watching it go up and down. And it seemed fairly accurate! :)

10 to 12 feet is the normal floor-to-floor height. In older buildings it is generally higher.

The GPS hadn't made contact with the satellites, that's for sure. Perhaps the altimeter works anyway? I really have no other explanation...

What kind of GPS? Some have a barometric altimeter built into them.

It's the Garmin etrex Vista

Yup, that model has a barometric altimeter built in.

Then that would probably explain it...

Thank you, Zac

I actually haven't looked up where I work on the topo maps, but my house is right on 760'. At eight feet per flight for house construction, I guess when I'm in bed I'm at 769'. Is there a 769'-high club?

I'm open for jokes about the number, too.

Tech, I hope you're in the 769 foot high club and the 69 club. Everyone should be members of those clubs in their own home. =)
