From what she said, the draft inducing was working because cold air was being vented from the flue. This unit has a spark igniter, not sure if she was able to hear it. Seems to be narrowed down to the draft sensor, the ignitor or the valve assembly. If the igniter is audible, then the valve is not opening. If the igniter is not audible, then either the igniter has failed (unlikely, since no gas smell) or more likely, the draft sensor. Since it is an outdoor unit, the notion of some animal getting in there has some merit. Just seems odd that a repairman wouldn't come back with a detailed technical explanation of whatever issues he found.

Could be the Iginition Control Module too. Who knows? Apparently, whatever it is, either the repairman has no clue (which is possible), and/or the repairman does not like to work outside.

I repair furnaces and water heaters and I have way too many times, gone to a customers home who has had a repairman out to repair the furnace, and he has said there is no gas pressure. Unfortunately, in most cases, it ends up being the ICM, or the gas valve itself, especially if it's a Honeywell Smartvalve...those suck. Repairmen, you can't trust them all. I think this one is trying to sucker Carlette.

Who needs a heater? Wolfeyes, with all that hardware and trouble shooting talk has me all hot and bothered.

Just the thought of a woman working with tools warms me blood!

If you do need to replace the unit, price out a geothermal heat pump system for a replacement. Costs more to install ($7K to $10K), but will pay for itself in a few years since it saves you on heating and cooling. That also translates into being better for the environment, too. Keep in mind the expensive parts of the system (the buried pipes outside) are designed to last 50+ years. When my current systems are ready for replacement I'm seriously considering this.

Hey there! Resurecting an old thread...

Anyone know where I could buy a mini catalytic heater?-Like the one shown at the first post of this thread.

The current coleman catalytic heaters are way to large, and use too much fuel (for intended application).

Thanks!

Fridge has a heater that he takes on the Freeze Your Ass Off Trip.

He's so full of gas he just hooks up a piece of rubber tubing and saves weight.

Thanks Carlette, have been and will continue to check e-bay. No luck.

Anyone seen a similar mini type, not necesarily coleman-but that size is perfect.

---Or has anyone used a non filiment lantern (like a brunton) as a heater? Ie can you turn the light way way down-so it puts out heat but hardly any light (saving fuel at the same time)?

Thanks!

for in tent use I think I would look for one specific to heating tents - one with O2 and CO sensors

I have 5 different heaters, I even have the one Coleman made up until last year that uses Isobutane and was the smallest heater I could find on the market. If you want to use a heater in your tent, ask yourself how much weight (fuel and size heater) will you want to add to your backpack for the intended trip in mind. I rarely use my heaters for backpacking and use often with my Pulk Sleds. I currently use a 3000 btu propane with a Oxygen sensor and co2 sensor and will shut off when jarred or tipped.
I have been using heaters in my winter excursions for 20 years now with no problems ever. I have to condensation problems freezing or water droplets manifesting inside my tent as well. I literally kick my bulky clothing off and set back and indulge in warm comfort. At the last FYAO, there were several YANKEES who slept in my Keron Hilleberg I will not mention whom those Yanks are, but the heater served all of us well with no problems.

I swear, some of those West Virginians.............

I made quite a bit of my own heat on that FYAO trip this year.
In fact, I melted quite a deep trench in the snow under my butt.

Hey there Hog on ice & Refrigerator,

Thanks for the suggestions for using a larger model, or one w/ a CO/O sensor. I don't think such exists on a mini model, but if so would be nice.

My application would be for cycling touring off road in Tibet (seriously). 95% of the time or more, there is nothing available to burn there.

On my trip in Xinjiang/Tibet last Oct/Nov I could never really warm up nicely, so having one of those mini warmers would make for a simply excellent addition to my kit. I figure use it before bed, then again in the morning. Warm feet/dry feet are happy feet.

It was no problem getting isobutane canisters in a few small cities(Kashgar/ALi/Lhatse/Lhasa)-so likely no problem in the future or at other cities (Urumqi etc).

"Bump"

If anyone has info on where to buy one of those mini-coleman Xponent Butane/Isobutane heaters (as seen in post 1 of thread), that would be swell.

Thanks!

the mini exponet are no longer being made. I bought 2 and could sell you one. I have only used one of the exponets for one time only so the other has never been fired up. These stoves only produce 1000 btu's. How big is your tent and what temps are you expecting?
I have another source with a bigger heater with 3000 btu's or even 5000.

Hey there Fridgy,

I'm interested in buying your mini exponent. That'd be super!

Tent is a 33 sq ft single wall (Eureka Zeus 2 exo - aka Zeus classic).

Likely night time averages around 10F to 15F or so (bellow zero F is common as well for extended periods), daytime averages 32F-50F.

Camel/ the 1000 btu heater would help as long as the wind did not constantly blow. Your single wall is designed with an air vent, can you close this vent off, Wind will cust throughout the tent to undermine the heat outout of 1000 btu's, I have always used the 4 season tents with a fly system to control the air flow, any hoo, I have the heater if you want it...........Just need to figure out a price, I will be back later, it's 5:40 am .........my e mail is refrigeratorfridge@gmail.com

Hey there fridgy,

Thanks a ton!

I usually set up a fly in the front using a silnylon tarp (used to make a much better vestibule). The fly also acts as a partial double wall on the front end of the tent (difficult to explain). This set up reduces wind "blow through" excluding gale forc etc-but keeps descent ventilation.

Also are you the same poster as "Refrigerator" above?

Once you decide a price let me know, I'd guess an e-bay private sale would be safest for the both of us, I can use paypal. Let me know extra charges & such they may have (if you do ebay that is).

Thanks!
