Opportunity? “stik: Now that CG has bailed on his trip, why don't you and Dave come down to Arkansas and git ya some real whitewater. With yesterday's rain, there are several rivers that would be great for you guys. Make sure that new boat has some float bags in it, though. last edited: 1/13/05 8:48:38 PM” 8:44:08 PM 1/13/05 Coincidence? “Now that I think about it, didn't CG get a new whitewater boat? Maybe the real reason he bailed is that, with the recent rains, he wanted to try out the new 'yak on something a little more stimulating than the Elevenpoint.” 8:48:03 PM 1/13/05 LOL @ “owl...you lurker you. I'm still leaning on the Points. I'm not that comfortable running fast moving white water in the Drowning Witch yet. I want to learn her abilities a bit more. Plus I do not have float bags, although she is a white water canoe. So, I'm seeing the need for big Brown to make a few deliveries for me in the future. That future isn't here yet. I'm not a winter water person. No dry suits and gloves and the necessities that can keep a person warm and dry whilst playing on white water, so, Owl, I will have to pass on the invite, but it is an invite that shall not remain unused for much longer. Now is not the time for me. Dave, I have the steaks lined up for purchase tomorrow and the onions and green pepper are in hand now all in prep for the fajitas. I have pancake batter and a log of sausage (hope its still good). I guess 2nd dinner and breakfast are yours since CG is not going to make it. Your such a lousy cook, that I'm sure we'll starve. If your still think something pastaish...get 2 cans of that bread that I made. Man, that was so awful, that I'd like to make a second attempt to get it right. CG...sorry to hear of the mental anguish that you put yourself through...sometimes swiping the anxiety card is a bad thing, but, if your feeling unsure, then its probably a good thing to pass. We'll catch you on another float. No worries. I talked with DaVinity, she's not gonna bring her bananna. She'll ride either with me or with Dave. Everyone have a great weekend.” 11:28:21 PM 1/13/05 “LOl....my big banana???.....Buttercup is her name......work is very stressful right now, so I opted to ride in a canoe like Cleopatra....sounds like I am going to be fed like a queen too..... CG...see ya next trip.......sorry you're not coming...... well..I need to get off here, and finish packing...almost finished......and off to work....... hugs” 3:17:14 AM 1/14/05 Have a great trip all... “as for owl suggestion that I would bail to go play in Arkansas she dose not know how much fun it is to float with you all on the EP. Like I said I have a had a bad experience with a cold weather camping trip and I even think I know why, taking a shower right before bed time in a camp that has heated showers is not a good idea. Also a hammock hanging in cool air is a great way to loose heat. What was even worse we were car camping and the car was right there but the girl friend was sleeping in it and decided it would not look right with my sons there if I slept in it with her so I froze my kester off. Got so desperate for warmth that I threw lighter fluid on a bag of charcoal and set the whole thing on fire. Still could not get warm though. Spent the night in a bag chair next to the fire shivering so hard that I could not sleep for the sound of my teeth chattering. It was the most miserable night of camping that I have ever endured and that is why I am aprehensive about this trip. You all have a great trip and stay warm. I owe you folks a rigatoni dinner on another outing when it is not quite so cold. Take care all I know you will have a good float.” 10:52:43 AM 1/14/05 “dang div, CG isn't coming ;)” 11:19:24 AM 1/14/05 “Oh CG i'm so disappointed that you're bailing. Spike and I were looking forward to meeting you. Divinity is not bringing her banana? ooooohhh i'm packing mine.....Spike and I are gonna share...he he...and I understand about feeling like a queen....I often feel that way too... Stikmon...I can't wait to catch an eyeball on you.....studdly man you must be....the hunk of TT...butt don't tell Spike I got eyes for you....” 11:24:04 AM 1/14/05 wtf!!! “Sunday loafer...you are now starting to piss me off. Your allegations of me being gay is really getting old. Take your medications and your preparations and ram them up your shnout. Sheesh...head to the gayla forum. This is a forum for backpacers. I have no problem with men (or women) that are into same sex relationships. Where I do have the problem is with "prissy" nincompoops and jerkoffs like you. take is somewhere else, it isn't wanted nor appreciated.” 12:01:07 PM 1/14/05 “stikmon, don't let the trolls get to ya. Once they have you pissed it will get worse. btw since div isn't paddling make her do all the work around camp and load/unload the canoe's” 12:18:36 PM 1/14/05 “Thanks Ewk for he support.” 12:23:05 PM 1/14/05 heck...I hate trolls... “and I dislike being harrassed by gay trolls.” 2:57:56 PM 1/14/05 yikes!!!! 5.27 on the richter scale... “fast and muddy. This will be a fun float! with more challenge than just lolligagging...Attention will have to be paid and the correct channel will have to be chosen. I'm soooooooooooo looking forward to this.” 7:00:12 PM 1/14/05 I hope they are staying dry... “I know I am missing out but I am getting boko OT this weekend. I want to know how it went when you all get home.” 11:04:32 AM 1/16/05 “CG: You missed a great weekend on the Mulberry too. Would have been a great time to try out the Diesel on whitewater. Today, the water temp. was actually warmer than the air temp. Made rolling quite invigorating! SYOTR” 5:17:43 PM 1/16/05 I got... “blue frosty balls!!! It was sooooooooooo cold, and we froze our balls off. It was too cold to enujoy ourselves. Plus the water was wayyy to up. joking...of course. It was great. the water was up and it was moving, but that made mileage really simple to cover. More details to come, and the quotes are hysterical. Later all.” 7:13:34 PM 1/17/05 “C'mon, TR already! And what have you done with Divinity???!? LOL” 11:04:59 PM 1/17/05 “I just arrived home........had a GREAT time..was cold.....BUT stayed warm most the time!!!............” 1:04:02 AM 1/18/05 when I get around to it... “I'll post a trip report of great worth.” 8:41:58 AM 1/18/05 “WHERE THE HE11 ARE THE DAMN TRIP REPORTS AND PICTURES????!!!!!! Slackers....... last edited: 1/18/05 7:55:40 PM” 7:54:27 PM 1/18/05 “I slept 3 hours and then worked 12 yesterday...no time for trip reports!!..... ...and I am still thawing out my frosty blue bruised balls.......” 4:15:34 AM 1/19/05 “LOL...... wimps! ;-)” 9:03:39 AM 1/19/05 “Divinity.... A transexual male fooling all the TT guys????!? So Div, was there shrinkage, too??? moooooooooooooooooohahahahhahaa” 11:19:03 AM 1/19/05 “sorry...still no trip report....another 12 hour day...and a bad one at that.....” 7:16:31 PM 1/19/05 “Poor div, let me rub your feet. ;-)” 8:33:22 PM 1/19/05 “that would be wonderful Stovey.... another 12 hour day today......I am going to be so rich......and still no trip report!!!....” 8:28:06 PM 1/20/05 trip report... “This trip was destined to be a classic and it was. It had all the potential to be great...cold temps, high, fast water, clear days. Sweet! We weren't dissappointed. Davinity arrived at my house on friday nite @9pm and we went out to do some last minute shopping. I recommended that she pick up a pair of rubber wading boots so that getting in and out of the boat wouldn't result in wet feet. She also picked up a few other items. We picked up some chinese food and headed back to my house to eat and look at photos of the Big Bend trip. Sat morn I got an early morning call from Dave saying that he was running late, so we didn't rush and got to the put in at Greer @ 10:40. We loaded the boats and off we went. Sailing down the Points on a clear cold morning. the water was up and fast, and it was spectacular. This was my first winter float trip and also the maiden voyage of the Drowing Witch on my home river. She performed grandly, taking all the luscious swift current like a pro. Because of the cold temps I had to leave Khatru home, and I missed him, but safety said not to bring him. We made the "dump zone" and gathered 2 boatloads of wood and headed down to a site just below my favorite camp site. We got to setting camp and and getting ready to make dinner. I heated some bean soup that I had made the night before and we had some hot soup as appetizer while the dinner was cooked. I made chicken fajitas for us all and there was plenty to go around. Dave made a cherry chocolate which was brilliant and delicious. We had some adult beverages and had a decent camp fire and stayed warm even though it was cold. Temps dipped into the teens that night but no one was cold in their tents as we were prepared for it. Morning came and Dave was first out, and I was a close second. It was snowing! fantastic flurries that whipped all around us made the morning feel less cold. We quickly got the fire going and began coffee and Dave got cinnamon buns going. Davinity emerged from her tent and the day began. We discussed the idea of staying at that location and just paddle out the remaining distance on Monday. We decided that this would be a good idea and allow us to relax and enjoy a great winter day on the river. We ate, drank and gathered loads of wood and had a camp fire going all day. It was great just to hang out and not have to deal with gear till the morning. The downside of this is that we would have to paddle longer than originally planned on Monday, but it was worth it. In the evening Dave made a honey baked ham and we again, ate like river royalty. Dessert was Dave's famous brownies. We hung out laughing at the cold and after much dinking around with inferior wood, I finally got a roaring camp fire going and we stayed very warm on what was to be a bitter cold night. Dave had set his tarp up as a wind break and it served us well. The temps dipped to below 9 degrees. It was REALLY cold that night, but again, we all stayed warm in our tents and the the flys got all frosty this time. Monday morning, we got up and had leftover ham and taters for breakfast and got to breaking camp and headed off downriver at a more early time. It was real cold this day and each one of us was staying warm in our own way...hand and feet warmers were put to the test and we all decided that those feet warmers suck and that the hand warmers ruled the day. We had wool caps on and I had a thick furry mad bomber hat which was so awsome. It was a gift that Khatru got for me and I really dug it. We stopped a few times to stretch and get blood flowing into cold feet and Boze was awsome, with frozen ice everwhere. We saw frost flowers and frozen icicles everywhere. We reached the take out at Riverton @3:15pm. Later than I wanted to originally, but still early enough that the drive home would be 90% done in daylight. I'd say that this was a successful trip, where temps were against us, but the weather was in our favor. With planning and preparedness, we were able to stay warm and comfortable for the most part. I'm glad I did it, but winter canoeing is not truely my cup of tea, because I can't do it with Khatru, and he is my partner in wilderness adventuring. Thanks to Davinity for being the intrepid lady that she is and to Dave for once again, being a great companion on the adventure road. I'm truely blessed to have the friends that I do so that I can share these moments with...thanks to all. Photos will arrive after I get around to posting Big Bend photos. LOL...sorry, but I'm real busy and I still don't know how to upload to trailtalk album. Later all...” 11:24:22 PM 1/20/05 “ last edited: 1/20/05 11:33:51 PM” 11:31:17 PM 1/20/05 “Thanks for the trip report Stikky...I am working 12 hour days.......no time for trip report.......was it really that cold Sunday night???.....a new all time low for me....17 degrees before.....I guess I should have known...seeing my orange juice freeze around the edge of my cup as I was drinking it....I am waiting for Dave and the quotes..LOL...” 3:22:20 AM 1/21/05 Sounds like I missed a good trip... “Instead I was working massive hours OT 13.5 hours sunday night into monday morning and 15.5 hours tuesday now they are mandatoring us to 10 hours days 7 days a week. I am working 12 so I should have the money for a canoe or touring kayak really soon. But, no time to go on any trips anytime soon. So the new boat is not getting any water time. After reading the trip report I know why it took so long to file it. You had to wait for the shivering to subside enough that you could type without the shaking turning your typing into jiberish. ” 9:31:46 AM 1/21/05 “You call THAT a Trip Report? ;-) Where's the old stikky's detailed works of art? Now even hardly a page. ;-)” 9:42:57 AM 1/21/05 I know what you mean ss... “not up to par, but its all I have time for. I'm so busy at work now that the day time isn't even long enough to get it all done and it has spilled over into personal evening time and will now take over this weekend. I had planned on a solo weekend of hiking somewhere in Ark or Mo, but that has been canceled due to needing the time to get my projects done. Crap on that, but gotta do what I gotta do and plus, I'll get to watch the playoffs of NFL. oh well the woods will wait. As for missing a great trip...yep you did, but we all agreed we weren't going to say that to you without you being present. the ripping will come around the next campfire. Stove, I stopped writing the weekend trip reports, since I'm so frequently going out, so, big trips garner big reports.” 10:54:57 AM 1/21/05 “Stikmon, you know I'm just yanking your chain a bit. The 'Walls' trip was great that same weekend. I'm glad so many of us were able to get out! last edited: 1/21/05 10:59:31 AM” 10:57:42 AM 1/21/05 Hey.... “...did you guys ever see that sunday loafer fella and his partner Spike? Stikmon trip reports going in the terl-let? So how's chilli-cotti bro?” 11:01:55 AM 1/21/05 “another 12 hour day, and dinner with my daughter...the evil, but beautiful one......she has turned out to be an awesome young lady..... maybe I will only have to work 4-8 hours tomorrow...and off Sunday.....I will work on my trip report...Stikky left out alot!!!!....isn't it great to see how everyone sees things differently???.....I love it!!!! NOW...off to bed I go......y'all behave........and tell me the scoop about Super Troll and turtle...( see the quote thread) night :)” 7:52:40 PM 1/21/05 its not always about me... “most of the time it is, but not always. I deliberately left out details. What happens on the trail/river stays on the trail/river. LOL...” 9:43:36 PM 1/21/05 “only an 8 hour day today!!!......maybe I'll work on that trip report.......and sheesh Stikky.......people are going to wonder what we were up to on this trip after that statement.......I...as usual....behaved....most the time anyway.....” 3:16:15 PM 1/22/05 proper behavior... “in the mind of the beholder or in the hands of the holder...LOL what was that quote..."OMG...its so big!"” 5:30:53 PM 1/22/05 whimps “9 degrees is hot for winter campen.15 below the coldest ive been.if ya get up and get moven its like a summers day.” 8:12:13 PM 1/22/05 “wimp???? at least I didn't have a HEATER in my tent...LOL..hahahahahahah” 8:22:52 PM 1/22/05 hey bald arsehole... “shut yer piehole! when you get out on a TT trip, then and ONLY then can you make negative comments on any of us, until then you are only a figment of your own imagination and not real to any of us. As for spike and dike...its a good thing those gay perverts didn't show up, otherwise there might have been a dumping...freakin duce bags and Chillicothe is COLD!!! and I'm trapped in a dang hotel room.” 10:37:21 PM 1/22/05 “who the he!! is spike and dike Stikky??? and who are these people posting???..and what are they talking about???? ok going to work on my trip report....” 6:47:17 AM 1/23/05 “I left Friday right after work...and put a book on tape in....time flies if ya have a good book to listen to....I arrived at Stikky's and after a nice greeting from him and Khatru, we were off to Walmart....a quick trip....cause Stikky walks so fast....he talked me into buying a pair of high rubber boots to keep my feet dry, and a pair of fleece pants......BOTH which I would have been miserable without......I bought a hat, some more hand warmers, anda few other items.....you could tell it was getting colder when the water froze on the mirrors as Stikky was washing them!!!..back to his place to visit, eat chinese, and preveiw the Big Bend pics!!!!..... ...Up and at em!!!...& off we go....a sad farewell to Khatru : ( .....we hooked up with Dutch Oven Dave @ Greer and loaded up the canoes...DOD was in for quite a treat....HE got the privledge of paddling my a$$ on the river!!!..I opted to ride in the canoe, like Cleopatra on her barge....work has been VERY stressful lately, and my goal was relaxation...and with Dave as my Captain, relaxation was achieved!!....He makes it look so easy...The river was up a bit, nice and swift....and even though it was up it was still a beautiful shade of green..... ...SOOOO relaxing....and a wonderful veiw of the area and bluffs that you cannot see when the trees have leaves.....We stopped at Turner's Mill for a break.....wooo hooooo....a toilet!!!!....a fairly decent toilet...tissue and you can sit down!!!...of course walking away to the trail you have a cold ring around your a$$ where the seat almost froze it......we found an old road , so we followed it....and found an old school house....It had shutters on all the windows, and they were all closed...around the other side was two doors...I tried the first door and it was locked.....then tried the second...it was open...so we went inside....it was one large room with a chalk board all across the front, and a hole in the wall for a heat stove....it had that wonderful "old building" smell....sweet and musty....... ...we traveled about 8 miles total that day and made camp...nice place......big area for fire ...and nice places for tents......we unloaded the canoes, and set up camp.....I found a wonderful sandy spot to put my tent up....and had it up in no time......Stikky and Dave have this canoeing/camping thing mastered....before I knew it we had a wonderful fire....and they began cooking......we had some soup that Stikky and his GREAT mom made the eve before.....it was so good and warming!!!.....chicken fahjitas.......seasoned to perfection......and yummy brownies!!!!!....Bailey's and Hot chocolate by a roaring, warm campfire...and LOTS of good conversation!!!!!....when the sun goes down, I am usually ready for bed.........so off to bed......I took 2 sleeping bags, and it paid off......threw a chemical body warmer in the foot of my down bag , and was warm the whole night ...ok..ok..except for my butt....for some reason it got cold....so I stuck one of those body warmers down the back of my pants.....and was comfy all night!!!!” 7:41:23 AM 1/23/05 Part 2....LOL..... “....Dave was the first up....and started yelling about something......OMG...it was snowing!!!!!....it was nice puffy flakes.....and when they landed on my coat sleeve, you could see the beautiful patterns.....Dave started the fire back up and put the coffee on....wooohooooo...and started making cinnamon rolls in the dutch oven.......YUMMMMM....they were unbelievable......( I have this thing for cinnamon..)......and if that wasn't good enough, he made biscuits and gravy........they were awesome.....(food really does taste better on the trail....)....we lounged around forever, and then decided to camp there another night.......so we gathered firewood.......I hiked around the area and found skeletel remains of some animal and carried it on a stick back to camp.......I am not sure what it was...it looked like a rodent..had some hair.....and had big canine teeth..( is that what they are called???)...we tried to guess what it was, but never really decided what it was...I sure wouldn't want it running around my camp!!!...for lunch we had SUBWAY, that Stikky and I got the day before to eat for lunch, and didn't...I completely forgot about it...one of the good quotes was "we've got Subway"...used at every mention of food...ok..ok..I forgot to put that in my first part of trip report, so it isn't as funny.....ya just had to be there.....ANYWAY, we had it for lunch.....with some cheese and left over brownies.....yummmm........ ....as the afternoon stretched on we gathered more fire wood, to make sure we had a good supply for nighttime and in the am ...since we heard the temps would be in the teens......and as evening came, Dave started cooking a honey glazed ham, with potatoes, celery and onions.....I peeled the potatoes and my hands HURT from the cold......I had to stop midway and warm them by the fire.........moisture froze on the knife.......it was getting colder and colder.......my water in it's bottle started to freeze.......we ate a wonderful ham & veggie dinner...and topped it off with cherry crisp....yummmmmmmm......and a few rum & cokes.....way to cold to drink beer!!!...(and alcohol makes your body think it is warm...and you really get colder!!).... ....the guys knew the weather was getting colder so earlier they put up a tarp to block the wind.....and a good thing too......we sat around a nice fire, moving here & there trying to get out of smokes way.....and then it happened.......I was off using the ladies room,( so I missed it........dang).........loud words, and chaos at the fire....Stikky had burned his slippers......( it happens at every campfire doesn't it??....someone melting a shoe or something???).....time for bed.......and looking forward to it.......a warm sleeping bag...or should I say 2 warm sleeping bags???...the stars looked so brilliant in the cold sky.....it was going to be VERY cold ...my water was freezing in the bottle......I didn't sleep well the night before....kept dreaming about the computer program from hell...., so maybe I would rest well tonight....I crawled into my tent, and put hand warmers next to my water bottle and covered it with my down coat......I shook and put a body warmer in the foot of my down bag, and had another ready for my butt, in case it got cold again......which seems funny since SURELY I have enough insulation on it....I stripped down to my polys, and removed 2 pair of socks and crawled into my bag ....I was warm and comfy, but still didn't sleep well......dreamed about paper work..... ......Up early to get an early start on the river..( I am not sure it is possible..LOL.....)......we ate leftover ham and veggies for breakfast.......with leftover brownies......yummmm.......I poured OJ into my thermal cup and it became a slushy........I would drink and you could actually see it freeze around the edges of the cup....our water was froze , so we had to sit the huge jug next to the fire to thaw......... ....time to pack up ...and out walks Stikky and he says......"Thanks for letting me use the heater Dave"......OMG....what????a heater????....Dave had brought his propane heater, and Stikky used it to keep his tent warm while he dressed......LOL...omg.....and I froze my butt while dressing in MY tent?...sheesh......LOL...” 9:34:53 AM 1/23/05 Part 3....wooohooooo “back on the river which had dropped some....and off we go....we could tell it was considerably colder this morning......beautiful........crisp........clear.......with a hope that the forcasts were correct and it would warm up........the bluffs had icicles hanging from them and it was a wonderful sight......we stopped at Bose Mill..and walked back to the spring...it is magnificent.....a wonderful green/blue color, the color of my fav turquoise ring....a gift from my mother... as millions of gallons of water surges from an unseen underground source....a cinnamon roll, and we are off again........towards the rapids...... ...uneventful but fun......not a day to dump the boat........way too cold....saw one eagle.....it must have been too cold for them too!!!......take out at Riverton....3pm.....vehicles waiting......so while the guys walked to get them, I unloaded the canoes to the best of my ability.....while they loaded stuff..I washed my face......O M G it started stining soooo badly.....and I could barely touch my nose.......It was soooo windburned.,.....and red as could be......hugs goodbyes and a big thanks to Dave for paddling my butt.....and off we go...... ......a wonderful sunset......great company......and I napped some on the way to Stikky's to prepare for my long drive home.....Khatru was so happy to see Stikky.......and I was happy to get a shower......Stikky fed me some more of the yummy soup he had made before sending me on my way.......goodbyes and on the road.......and pop in my book on tape......I now was going to get to the last part of my book and find out who the killer was...... gear list... clothes worn in canoe- bra poly tee shirt poly long sleeved turtleneck fleece vest fleece pullover coat (synthetic for on the river....down coat for camp) scarf hat thinsulate gloves sock liners 2 pair of smartwool socks poly long undies fleece pants lined rain pants one cool pair of rubber boots with green soles” 10:01:32 AM 1/23/05 Lessons I learned... “lessons I learned from this trip..... ........those toe warmers do not work well....they get really hard and bruise your balls ( the balls on your feet that is..) ........opening boxes of rice crispy treats is dangerous...they will leave gaping holes in your fingers..... ........do not touch metal surfaces with wet appendages...(Stikky can explain that one) ........hats are a must....they will help keep you warm...you lose like 80 some % of body heat thru your head.....but they will give you hat hair...or make you look like Yukon Jack.....LOL..hahahahahahahahahah..and..... make women want to pet your head........ .......chemical hand warmers are nice....but what the he!!....get the body ones...they heat for 18 hours and cover more area...and you can stick em down your pants...... .......chap stick will melt in your pocket if you have a hand warmer in it also... .......bring paper and plastic so you don't freeze your fingers while doing dishes.....( Dave did the dishes..I would have ate with everything dirty in this cold...what germs could possibly still live in these temps???) .......you have to take a cooler to keep everything from freezing........ .......and your 5 gallon water jug needs one of those covers on it's spout to keep it from freezing up ( ya know the kind ya use on your outdoor spigots??) ....and .....urine will freeze not too long after it leaves the body in these temps.......do NOT...I repeat.....DO NOT use wet ones in below freezing temps.......” 10:02:34 AM 1/23/05 great fillins... “now I'm really giggling thinking about the fillins that weren't mentioned in your fill ins.” 10:33:50 AM 1/23/05 “LMAO... good reports, Div. So... did Stikkie stick his tongue to a flagpole at the ole school, LOL???!? Body warmers??? What's that? Hey and I'm glad you got to see some snow. You've been waiting for that, no?? :-)” 10:40:09 AM 1/23/05 “divinity - Well, who was the killer? lizs - I can be a good body warmer.” 10:57:23 AM 1/23/05 “that snow was just a nice dusting...... where is Dave with the quotes????...” 10:58:50 AM 1/23/05 “killer= an FBI agent....... OUT OF CONTEXT quotes like... oh look how hard.... ....and there is the "uniboob" LOl..hahahahahahah” 11:01:31 AM 1/23/05 << back to The Frosty Blue Balls Float page
