Time Magazine's Person of the YearView Messages“Time Magazine Chooses its Person of the Year and what a great choice. U.S. President George W. Bush was named Time's "Person of the Year" in 2004 for his victory over Democratic challenger John Kerry and for "reshaping the rules of politics," the weekly newsmagazine said. The president was chosen "for sticking to his guns (literally and figuratively), for reshaping the rules of politics to fit his 10-gallon-hat leadership style and for persuading a majority of voters this time around that he deserved to be in the White House for another four years," Time Managing Editor James Kelly wrote. In an interview with the magazine, the President said he had to make sure that voters knew he would "confront problems and not pass on them." "You've got to stand your ground, particularly in the face of criticism," Bush told Time. "I think the American people are looking at somebody running for office and they want to know what they believe, why they believe it and do they really believe it?" Bush and his father, former President George Bush, are the only two members of the same family to have been chosen as person of the year, in 2000 and in 1991, respectively. Bush is the 12th person to be chosen more than once and the eighth president to be named multiple times. Recent winners include the American Soldier in 2003, Sherron Watkins, the former Enron Corp. employee who called attention to the company's accounting problems in 2002, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 2001; Bush in 2000; and Jeffrey Bezos, founder and chief executive officer of Amazon.com Inc., in 1999. Time magazine started the annual cover story in 1927 with Charles Lindbergh, the aviator who made the first solo trans- Atlantic flight. The first woman was Wallace Warfield Simpson, whom Britain's Edward VIII abdicated the throne for, in 1936.” 12:51:28 PM 12/19/04 “Before the Man of the Year was announced yesterday, Time had an advertisement on tv saying it could be Bush or others or a terrorist. Yeah, right, mayke a terrorist Man of the Year. They may get a lot of publicity, but I can't imagine anyone buying that issue or any further issues.” 1:11:17 PM 12/19/04 “Lets not forget that Pres. Clinton was also named Person of the Year by Time magazine. For a list of who has been named Person of the Yearr http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/archive/stories/” 1:41:56 PM 12/19/04 Not A Big Deal “Almost every president has been a Time Magazine Man Of The Year.” 2:54:18 PM 12/19/04 “"person of the year" doesnt necessarily mean most "good" or "wonderful" person, hes just more of a person than any other person. or something” 3:15:32 PM 12/19/04 “..but the libs will still have a B&%!h fit! ;-) last edited: 12/19/04 3:16:54 PM” 3:16:03 PM 12/19/04 “SS, you are so full of #&%!$. last edited: 12/19/04 3:21:25 PM” 3:21:07 PM 12/19/04 “Right back atya buddie! ;-)” 3:24:30 PM 12/19/04 “I see yet more therapy in the future for the far lefties. ;-)” 3:28:32 PM 12/19/04 “i think a lot of repubs dont agree with this choice, but its not good strategy to break ranks” 3:35:47 PM 12/19/04 “SS, the only one that needs therapy is you for thinking that because Bush got person of the yr will cause Democrats to get mad. Like Budder said, almost every President gets it. No big deal. I posted that Clinton did to rub prosecutor because he made such a big deal out of it that Bush got it.” 3:38:08 PM 12/19/04 “personally, i was rooting for ron artest” 3:40:22 PM 12/19/04 “I'll bet Lyndie England is pissed!” 3:41:41 PM 12/19/04 “Sounds like Ewker is mad. ;-)” 3:47:02 PM 12/19/04 “id vote for lyndie england. if anyone is a person, she is.” 3:50:08 PM 12/19/04 “mad?? I don't think so plus why would I be. It means nothing to me at all. It meant nothing to me when Clinton got it. talk about therapy SS, maybe you need to check it out.” 4:01:46 PM 12/19/04 “SS, you are so full of #&%!$. last edited: 12/19/04 3:21:25 PM” Ewker 3:21:07 PM 12/19/04 Now, who needs therapy? LOL” 4:05:27 PM 12/19/04 “Adolf Hitler... Joseph Stalin... Nikita Khrushchev... Ayatullah Khomeini... George W. Bush. Works for me!” 4:12:56 PM 12/19/04 “ 5:04:22 PM 12/19/04 “I would have thought they could have gone for Rumsfeld.” 7:49:43 PM 12/19/04 “yea, theres a well-liked guy” 9:23:04 PM 12/19/04 “lol” 9:24:38 PM 12/19/04 “prosecutor, you bad boy !!!” 9:32:29 PM 12/19/04 “All I know is Canuckland better lock up the border...because alot more Dems going to try to sneak in. hee hee” 10:05:24 PM 12/19/04 “Times have changed. Now even the very liberal Time Magazine recognizes the superior leadership and true person integrity of our President, George W. Bush. The extremists on this forum can go sing the praises of a disbarred lawyer, eco-terrorists, and loser politians, but mainstream America recognizes the superior qualities of our President.” 10:55:21 PM 12/19/04 “prosecutor sings the praises of our Dear Leader.” 11:05:48 PM 12/19/04 “being named person of the year is not always a tribute for doing good things. Osama Bin Laden was almost person of the year a few years ago. Hitler received the same honor during WWII. It's just a nod for being in the news a lot. No big deal. Who cares, snore!! Personally, I think Bush is in common company with Hitler and Osama. last edited: 12/20/04 12:28:46 AM” 12:21:05 AM 12/20/04 Yeah..........Errrrrr.........Right! “Didn't mainstream America almost have a split decision, slightly leaning toward Bush of course, during the November elections?” 5:52:42 AM 12/20/04 “Uh huh, it was more like a cracked decision.” 7:14:57 AM 12/20/04 Next: bush on Mount Rushmore “Recent Presidents who won their second election--Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton provided little in the way of coattails to their party. Remarkably, the parties of these winners all suffered net losses in the U.S. Senate, and none scored a gain of even 15 seats in the House. Since the rise of split-ticket voting after World War II, a successful presidential reelection has invariably turned into a "lonely landslide." In the midterm elections of 2002 the Republicans gained control of both houses of Congress, an extremely rare accomplishment for midterm elections. Historians credit the victory to President Bush, whose popularity with the electorate seemed to sway many close contests for both Senate and House seats toward the Republicans. In 2004, the Republicans made even more unprecedented gains in both the House and the Senate on Bush's coattails, like never before in the last 76 years. None of these unprecedented gains would have happened without Bush's superior leadership and support by mainstream America. By historical standards a remarkable man.” 7:36:31 AM 12/20/04 Better Yet....... “We should have LARGE flattering portraits and statues of our Dear Leader Dubya erected all over the nation so that real Americans won't forget how wonderful he is. This will help feed the cult and solidify his grip on power.” 7:52:09 AM 12/20/04 “Prosecutor says he's a remarkable man. I say pickin's were pretty slim this year. Hey, it's all subjective! But, Mt Rushmore? Jeez, man. You're a dreamer!” 7:58:40 AM 12/20/04 “MarkO you don't have a statue in your yard yet?!” 8:06:13 AM 12/20/04 EarthNsky “Hitler was Time man of year for 1938, so unless the USA under Roosevelt was in an undeclared war with Germany this predated the war in Europe by 9 months, and US involvement by almost 3 Years (35 months). Please don't let facts get in your way.” 8:17:12 AM 12/20/04 “Boy what a horrible year for liberals. First their horse-faced straw man gets his ass kicked by what many have claimed "the worst president ever", they lose traction in both the house and Senate, they lost key state governorships and now their source of all evil and injustice gets man of the year. This year just can't get any better for me!!” 8:18:19 AM 12/20/04 “LOL@Nigal” 8:20:45 AM 12/20/04 “Person of the year has more to do with being influential and making an impact (for better or worse) on society as a whole. Love him or hate him not a single person can argue that GWB didn't make a strong impact on both America and the world.” 8:21:33 AM 12/20/04 “Yeah Sass, I'm gonna get one of those gnomes for my yard instead!” 8:40:44 AM 12/20/04 ““Person of the year has more to do with being influential and making an impact (for better or worse) on society as a whole. Love him or hate him not a single person can argue that GWB didn't make a strong impact on both America and the world.” So true HPM. Didn't Arafart get it one year?” 8:49:18 AM 12/20/04 “One year it was Ho Chi Minh!” 8:50:41 AM 12/20/04 “Nigal, you are correct. Einstein, too!!!” 8:53:50 AM 12/20/04 “In recent years, Democrats have made NO impact on society, other than push more middle of the road people towards Bush.” 9:32:45 AM 12/20/04 prosecutor “Trolling is one thing, but your last post has got to be chumming !!” 9:38:57 AM 12/20/04 “Really? I thought he shot right over chumming and was going for the dyno-might! LOL!” 9:41:09 AM 12/20/04 “What's that I see? A big toe hanging out of Bush's ass. Wonder who's body is attached to it?” 9:48:42 AM 12/20/04 “I hear Carl Rove was also considered for the honor, would have been far more deserving as he managed the task of spinning the whole of the middle part of America.” 9:57:16 AM 12/20/04 “Not up for consideration this year was "The American Voter." ;op” 10:02:42 AM 12/20/04 “How long have you been here y2 ? Have you not visited anywhere other than the 2 coasts and big cities ?? That was no spin, That is middle America, the same middle America that feeds everyone in the coasts and cities and a good portion of the world outside the US.” 10:04:01 AM 12/20/04 “ ”10:04:58 AM 12/20/04 “lol Manuka, well I've been here long enough, and yes I've been to the middle bit. Of course they were fooled. The whole election can down to the war on terror, and they were fooled that was in Iraq has actually made America safer. Low-wage earners were fooled that by giving billionaires huge tax cuts Bush was looking after thier interests - the list is endless. Actually, what really happened was that the Dems failed to find a candidate that appealed in any way to the heartland. Perhaps there's not one in the wole party.” 10:11:52 AM 12/20/04
