Traction on Snow and Ice
Do you have any experience with traction devices for snow and ice that can easily be strapped onto your regular hiking shoes/boots?

Drop down to the bottom where it says "search threads". Type in "Crampons" and all sorts of stuff comes up, including tampons soaked in a Midol solution (Crampons, get it? today's sick joke).

I have...
the stabalicers that are on that REI page. I like them alot...they are a bit heavy, but, if it don't kill you, it'll make you stronger.

I have Yak Trax..they are only good on flat ice..not snow,,for that you'd need the new style with the velcro strap..I repeatedly lost my Yak Trax in snow..now I use these..:

Might also want to try Kahtoola crampons. I got a pair and I've used them on soft summer hiking boots and heavier plastic boots. A little pricey at $125/pair, but they work great in the backcountry.

Yak Traks are great on short stretches of soft ice and snow if there is no significant elevation gain.

Korkees are pretty good too for ice too, kinda heavy but the snow doesn't pull em off and the studs grip pretty well.

Are those Kahtoola crampons fairly sturdy? How long have you used them.

Yep -- Stabilicers for medium usage.

The heads on those machine-head screws do wear out, though....

What are suggestions for Smokies winter summits? I am in the market for a pair as well. The Stubai's wouldn't be overkill would they?

I was wondering how 'solid' the newer strap system felt. I have an older pair with plain straps, and by the time they felt really 'hooked on,' the straps were so tight my toes were losing circulation! <grin>
