Cable runs a hair under $50 here in the big metropolis.

We have two competing cable companies in this area, so it keeps cable rates "low".

If I didn't want to keep my email address, I would go cable, and get their digital cable package.

bitpusher - that's one reason I use the redirection.net service. I can keep my email address (and/or make as many email addresses as I want) no matter what carrier I'm using. Their service only costs around $18 a year, and that includes domain name registration.

The Verizon guy came out this afternoon. Seems the guy who was here last month did not tighten the nut down on the wire in the basement, and it would go in and out. So I'm up and running for now. They're also going to do something at the poles out front - cut away from some other lines, which should increase speed a bit.

I'm running at 737.7 Kbits per second.

So, having made the decision to stick with Verizon and having my DSL line put back into working order, what do I read?

Lucky me! Canceling DSL and phone service would definitely have made cable cheaper!

Great timing, Geobeet!! Great timing. You haven't lost a step!

Through DSL and msn, I'm getting faster service and long distance phone calls that I pay up to $20, then they are free. Since I used to buy $40 in phone cards per month, this is going to work out for me.

I have a new computer. The old one couldn't handle the fast service.

James Earl Jones is a liar!
I cancelled DSL last night and ordered cable modem just moments ago.

For 10 years I had good phone service. When I installed DSL, there were problems with the service. Technicians came to the house to check it out and in the process cut service out on my main phone line. The other line works part of the time. In the past two weeks I was able to get online for about 2 hours. Everytime I called to complain I got bounced around between DSL and Analog Repair. Finally said screw it. I cut out DSL and the phone lines. The total saved will more than pay for cable modem, but I get it for six months at $19.99, a $50 rebate, and a free modem after rebate.

GeoBeet:

You will LOVE comcast's speed... I routinely exceed 3MB/s while doing extensive downloads. Outages do happen, but only rarely. I think 3 or 4x in the past year and a half, never for longer than 2 hours and usually only a few minutes.

After the special deal, it's about $45/month, but worth it in my opinion.

So, are you going to go with VoIP for phone service or just use a cell phone?

For now I'm using cell phone. I figure technology will change in the next few years. Who knows what we'll end up with?

I'm waiting the 8-10 days for the stuff to arrive. Waiting (tapping toes), .... still waiting, ... (arms folded across chest), waiting, ...

Thanks for the note James. I have ComCast digital cable for TV, so I know there are outages, but rarely do they last long. It's usually when there is a bad storm. The dependability of cableTV was a factor in my decision. Of course, I had dependable phone service till I hooked up DSL, so that may not be a true indication. But I've heard nothing but good about ComCast Internet.

Running the cable modem can cause problems with HD tv signals.

I had Comcast Internet for 5 years (started out as "@Home" back in the day), loved it. Outages were about the same as mentioned above. You are going to love it.

Unfortunately I can't get it where I now live. :-( Heck, I would settle for DSL, but can't get that either.

I just went to the local office and picked up the self-install kit myself. No line, no waiting.

You probably could have gotten the same or better deal at Circuit City or someplace (and been up and running by now) but yeah, you'll love it.

I've never noticed any degradation in the HD signal from the cable modem y2.

TV Service
kinda related ... anyone have comments on Dish vs Direct TV. I'm looking to drop my calbe and go satellite.

My daughter (who lives around the corner) can't get DSL or Cable. Satellite Internet is slower & more $$. Someday that will change.

She'll be over later with the 4 yr old "varmit" who (used to) like to jump off couches & broke both bones in his arm. I'll ask him if he wants to jump off the couch with me as she's leaving. Cast comes off in 6 weeks.

Reminds me of a 14-year-old "varmint" who decided to punch a door because he was mad at his sister. He's a little bit older and wiser now.

spikehiker - are you talking going satellite for the TV, for Internet, or both? I can speak for DirecTV for the TV component. Love it, I'll never go back to cable. Pure digital picture for all channels - the local cable company still delivers all of the normal analog channels in analog, even if you get digital service with the digital box. What a rip-off.

Only downside is during really big rainstorms or big snowstorms. The high cloud top of a big storm cell will block the signal for a little while if its between the dish and the satellite. Happened maybe 6 times in the last 9 mos., no more than 15 minutes at a time. Just the nature of the satellite beast.

Both are about the same. Go with which is cheaper.

Both drop out during heavy downpours.

I have what my local cable provider (Cox) calls the 'Digital Bundle'. I have their digital cable (HD) along with their high speed internet and digital phone service. Having the HD and internet service has been no problem at all.

The nice thing about ComCast is that if I do have problems, they'll come out and fix them. They even do calls on weekends, unlike Ma Verizon.
