Goto Trip Page: The Great Pennsylvania Ice Fall Ball 2005

The winter car camping experience
or if you're a slacker like me you can rent a cabin.

This trip will be February 4th-5th. I am renting a cabin in the park and all the spots are spoken for already. There are several other cabins and plenty of car camping spots.

here is the parks webpage:
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/rickettsglen.aspx

This trip will be awesome. There will be some pretty good winter hiking that will require crampons to get around the waterfalls which seriously ice over in the winter. Ricketts Glen is PA's finest Park in my opinion. It was supposed to be a National Park and developement only stopped due to the onslaught of World War II.

Sign up, this will be lotsa of fun. It's possible we could even try to do some ice climbing. There is also iceskating on Lake Jean.

yeah, I was reading the site and crampons are required for the falls trail. If you don't have them, they rent pretty cheap at EMS.

I hiked in the Glens about 8 years ago in January and it was impossible to get passed sokme of the falls. I had to climb up the side of the gorge and go around them up high.

It gets a little hairy there in the winter. Should be tons of fun.

So go to Ocala, then.

This trip will be a nice oasis in the middle of this annual ice age we like to call winter, without actually having to leave winter behind...slacker style. Oh yeah!

i also suggest an ice axe. with these cold temps, the glens will be completely frozen over. check out the ice climbers at ganoga, very cool!

ENS- ricketts glen is one of the nicest state parks in the country, but you also need to check out ohiopyle state park, incredibly beautiful. leonard harrison and colton point (PA grand canyon) are also very nice.

as ENS mentioned, there is a second waterfall area west of ricketts glen- big falls, twin falls, lewis falls, plus several small waterfalls and cascades. above sullivan falls are an additional TEN waterfalls. these gorges are very rugged, and there are no trails along the streams. exceptionally beautiful.

sorry, i can't make it. i have a jury trial that following week.

I called to reserve a cabin today and they are all full for that weekend so I reserved a campsite. There are still campsites available. There is room at my campsite for 5 people and two tents, one vehicle (there is a lot for other vehicles).

I reserved a car camp spot - we'll still have showers and bathrooms to use and I'd rather car camp anyways, plus it's $30 split up and a lot cheaper! as apposed to $200 split up. You should bring that ginormous tent of your's.

it's in Ricketts Glen State Park. It's inside the statepark.

The website says that ice axes aren't required but recommended. Crampons are required.

qPib??? Sorry, but I still can't figure out what this means.

Is this some kind of East Coast "secret password"?

Do you guys ever backpack... or just talk about it & basecamp / car-camp?

I really, really don't mean to start a flame war. Just trying to understand.

I agree...
why car camp, when you can backpack up the trail and camp in the woods with no cost.

I'm thinking the east coasters are wussies and can't handle themselves in the winter.

Why 2 years ago, me, stratusloop and a bunch others, snowshoed up the AT and camped out during the blizzard that shut the Pa Turnpike down...did we car camp...NO, did we bail...NO. We backpacked and put up a monster fire in the middle of the blizzard where it snowed 36" on us. Sheesh...Get with it ENS...car camp...hahahahaha...

Car camping should only be used as a jump off place to meet the group and then head into the woods the next day. I'm a backpacking snob and blow my nose in your general direction.
