At Blue Ridge Mtn Sports???
I was at the BRMS in Franklin, TN today getting a couple of sil-nylon stuff bags and a iso-butane cannister for my stove. I saw this guy with his arms full of socks, capilene and other clothes. I went to the counter to open the boxes in front of the salespeople and compare the different sizes of stuff sacks. There was a large crowd in the store, lots of people buying gifts and the local mall was jammed. I kept seeing this guy with lots of stuff and I asked him if he had a trip planned. He stated that he was going skiing. When I got to the counter his wife was there and they had a counter full of purchases to make. They both asked me to go ahead and I said I was in no hurry and wanted to look around some more. Then it hit me who the couple was. It was Faith Hill and her husband Tim McGraw! I am not a hugh country music fan at all, but I do like some of their music. She had her hair in a pony-tail and a fleece cap. He was dressed very casual also, then I noticed her diamond ring. Boy, was it a ROCK! He kept looking around and had lost his cell phone. I helped him and the store manager look for it, then the nearby restaurant called her cell and said they found it there (Logans). The store employees had already started ringing up their purchases and they wound up with 4-5 large shopping bags full. They said they were off to Aspen for the holidays. I wished them a Merry Christmas and they returned the wish and off they went. I called my sister later and she screamed at me for not getting a autograph of a pic. I have seen several celebraties in the area, Billy Ray Cyrus lives nearby, but we don't see him often anymore since he has a TV program. I had Physical Therapy with Wynonna Judd a few years ago before she got heavy. My wife saw Tanya Tucker at a local convience store a few years ago also. There are lots of entertainers in this area, mostly country, but some Rock and Roll and Pop.

It's nice that they were nice. I never ask for autographs, I think it's demeaning. I'd rather just enjoy a few moments.

I met Titans' Coach Jeff Fisher at the old Sports Authority in Franklin a couple of years ago. I talked to him while his daughter looked for clothes. My sister almost died when she heard that too. I called her from the parking lot and she wanted me to go and get a autograph. I wouldn't do it and I think that is being too pushy. I'm sure they like being recognized, but to hound them is just too much. Most people around here just speak and smile and leave them be.

I admit it. I'm a country fan. I like that couple quite a bit. Glad to hear that they seem pretty normal and grounded.

The most famous person I have ever met was Colonel Sanders at O'Hare airport when I was about 5 years old. He was dressed in the same suit he always wore for the Kentucky Fried Chicken ads. And he was very nice, almost Santa-Claus-like.

I worked as a manager in a NY restaurant and saw many celebrities. If you see them often enough, you tend to just get excited over the ones you really like. It's funny to see them in person and see how tall or short they are. On tv or in the movies, everyone looks the same size, lol.

Cool!

I've seen a number of people around LA, Airports, and at Disneyland. My last sighting at Disneyland was Cal Ripkin. He seemed pretty laid back.

Got with 4 feet of Prince Charles (of England) on our trip to the Netherlands.

Phil, how did Prince Charles appear in person? Did his appearance (looks) leave an impression on you? Sometimes it all depends how you feel about a person. Would you have noticed him if you passed him on the street and he was in regular clothes?

I had Jack Lemon in the restaurant where I worked and didn't notice him until he was leaving and said goodbye to me, and I nearly fainted! I loved Jack Lemon. It's said that he is not very recognizable and he isn't. He didn't have very noticeable features. He was in a plain suit with other business type men in plain suits.

Paul, I hope you get well soon. Come to Roan Mtn with us next week if you get better. A few of us are going to the shelter (cabin) to spend the night. We will hike up to Grassy Ridge the next day if the snow isn't too deep. Drop me a line if you are interested.

Tim is a nice guy and his Mom is super nice.

Way back in the day when Tim was playing local clubs (He's a Florida boy) trying to get noticed he developed a really strong following around here. Finally he decided it was time to do the Nashville move.

To raise the money to make the move he contacted us to print some tshirts that he sold to generate some cash. Kinda stupid graphic with the usual guitar wearing a cowboy hat and boots that said "Send Tim to Nashville". We printed a bunch of 'em.

Y'all already know the rest of the story about Tim, but his Mom used to come back to the shop and bring us homemade cookies every once in a while. She said it was just thanks for helping to make her boy a star.

Yeah right, he made himself a star, we just printed some shirts. Good cookies though.

Before the Dixie Chicks became popular, I got to eat lunch with them before putting on one of their shows at a theatre I worked at right out of high school. Fame has ruined them. They used to be so sweet and nice.

I got to sit next to Chris O'Donnel (spelled wrong) while I was an extra on the set for the movice "The Chamber." My sister was working for me that day and I had him call her to thank her for working. We talked for about 20 minutes or so. Never thought about asking for an autograph. Great guy.

Met Steven Segal while on set for the movie on the battleship. I can't remember it now but they filmed a lot of it on the US Alabama in Mobile. It was during Spring Break. It was raining in Panama City so we decided to drive over to see what was going on. We got in late and walked around the parking lot for awhile. We were leaning up against a fence that seperated the lot from the waterfront and he came up from behind us. Scared the hell out of us too! The guy is huge. We talked for about 15 minutes and went back.

I met Paul Tibbets - pilot of the Enola Gay - and his wife. Good man.

I've also met John Glenn. Nice, firm handshake.

Ray Bradbury is the nicest, sweetest guy.

I've seen the Dalai Lama give a speech. What is the secret to world peace?

Other notables from my life list of people I've met or seen speak: George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, Hilary Clinton, Al Gore, Bob Dole, John Kerry, Pope John Paul II, Sandra Day O'Connor, lots of baseball players, lots of Catholic cardinals/bishops, lots of theologians.

I like to be an involved observer of history. I also like to tell stories about the meetings to my history and English students.

One of the best stories, BTW, was talking to the professional confetti guy at an Al Gore/Bill Clinton speech. He showed me the confetti canon and said that he makes a very good living travelling from place to place and shooting confetti at just the right speed and height.

I guess the guy is kind of like an NFL long-snapper. You don't notice him until things go wrong.

Joan Rivers came into the restaurant I worked in. She can be annoying, but her stand up work in the old days was good. Just so I could talk to her for a minute after I seated her and her party, I brought over a plate of free mints after dinner that we give out as you leave the restaurant. I was careful to only put on the plate the ones that our rats did not chew on. They were chocolate mints wrapped in foil.

Why not she looks like a rat. There are very few people I will change the channel on. She is at the top of the list! "She has had her face lifted so many times there isn't any meat left in her shoes!" (Old Red Skeleton line)

My 85 year old neighbor died in the mid 60's. This thread reminds me of a story he told along a similar line, but in a much different time.

There used to be an old gas station building in town. If you are from the west you have seen the type, very small, one lane under a canopy between the building and supports for the canopy. Whole thing would fit in lobby of a modern conveneince store.

Anyway, when it was operating in the old days, it was a hang out for the guys. My neighbor's story is that often on Saturday afternoons a band player would come in and charge a tank of gas to get to his gig for the night, then come in Sunday and pay the bill.

The band player was Lawrence Welk.

My brushes with celebrity:

Sandra Bullock threw me gold plated beads at Mardi Gras (great throw, too, I caught 'em).

Got drunk with William Burroughs.

Got a ride with Orson Welles when I was thumbing.

Met Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson at a party.

Met lots of notable psychologists at conferences and stuff, but people prolly wouldn't know the names.

Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Patrick Ewing went to my high school - not at the same time, but I never met any of them. My sister had a class with Ewing though.

My Dad met tons of people in gov't, but that's already two degrees of spearation (or is it one?).

Most importantly though, I met a bunch of TT'ers.

I met Cheryl Ladd from Charlie's Angels. She was so short and petite, I almost didn't recognize her. I met Peter Falk from "Columbo". I loved that show. I met Rhoda, from the Mary Tyler Moore show, and saw Mary Tyler Moore in person. Also waved to "The Fonz" with me and my girlfriends when he was in a restaurant. He was nice and waved back. I met Christy McNichols from the old show called "Family". I met Morgan Fairchild, who recently did a few Navy (store) commercials, before they changed to Jessica Parker.
