I called and ordered one for Christmas. I am going to have the kids over for an early dinner. My kids are still picky eaters so I will just fix the basic foods to go along with the ham.

Anyone else buy the Honey Baked Hams.

They're good but expensive. Last Easter I bought a regular Smithfield ham, found a recipe for a glaze online, and baked it myself. It was delicious. Even my grandmother said it was good.

We're ordering one today. A company we work with sends everyone in our office gift certificates there each year.

Get their honey mustard and then pick up some Hawaiian Sweet rolls. It's a great combo for the leftovers.

I have boycotted Honey Baked Hams ever since an bad experience my brother had years ago as an employee of that company. They don't treat their employees or their customers well.

I will probably pick up a turkey breast and some other goodies while I am there. Nothing beats a cold turkey sandwich with mayo on white bread.

I don't like the taste of ham anyway. Too salty.

I'm sure it's not every location that treats their employees and customers poorly.

Nonetheless... I'll never purchase anything from them.

lumber - the hams aer sweet. Good stuff.

Ewk - turky sandwiches are great. I smoked a turkey Thanksgiving before last. The leftovers were better than the main meal.

I love the Honey Baked Hams also. I always keep the hambone and any remanining scraps of meat and cook them with the 13 bean soup for a great meal. They cook good in my Dutch oven. BTW Ewker, do you want the other Dutch oven I have??? I'll sell it for half of what you would buy a new one for. You can not tell which one my "friend" rusted after seasoning and cooking in it for years.

LONG WAIT
Ewker

Be prepared for a long wait when you go to pick it up.

Some of those locations have lines around the block at xmas and easter.

Just bear it in mind if you are scheduling yourself tightly that day.

I hope you ordered it! Do so ahead of time and it will be quicker. I think you still can. My wife usually does it now. There is a recipe on the back of the beans you buy at the store or you can just buy a bag of the 13 (or is it 15) bean soup at your local grocers. I usually just soak the beans then put in a pot with water to cover and season as I please. Kind of like grandma, different every time, lol.

I just use salt and pepper, some garlic powder, some cayene pepper, and what ever I see in the pantry! Experiment with it, I have never ruined a pot of beans. Go easy with the spices at first then when they are close to done usually after a few hours the box says one hour. You can season some more to your taste. Good with cornbread, esp. jalapeno!

We always buy Dearborn Hams, they're glazed and sliced and taste better than honeybaked hams. I don't imagine you could get one down south though. The worst is those packed in water processed oval shaped "hams" from the grocery store. ICK!

I make 13 bean soup with the ham bone too. =) The recipe on the back of the bag is perfect except never use the ham flavoring and add more red pepper.

Ham is my favorite. Never tried a honey baked ham. I make a glaze with brown sugar and baste it a lot...yummy...
chunk it up and bring it along on winter trips.

Sams Club and Costco have good honey baked spiral cut hams that are cheaper than the ones from the HBH store.

My mother-in-law sent us a big ham once. I was wondering if she realized we were just two people, and I didn't care for ham. She didn't bother to ask if I liked ham before she sent it. But it's the thought that counts right? Wrong!!!!!! Think twice, buy once.

Hubby doesn't like to freeze and defrost food, so I threw a lot of it out. I did try to salvage some by making pea soup.

If she sends another one, maybe you could just donate it to an area soup kitchen.

I went and got my ham today. Line was fairly short. I also picked up a smoked turkey breast. Now I have to try not to eat it before my kids come over Sat.
Leftovers will either be frozen or taken on the trip to the Smokies

Side dish for the ham!
There is no way you can serve a honey-baked ham without the baked beans. If you think you've had good bbq baked beans before, you ain't tasted nuthin' until you've tried these. I promise you not only will you not be dissapointed, you'll be copying the recipe for all your friends. http://www.frontiernet.net/~electech/beans.htm

creek, that's good idea. I think my hubby really wanted to eat some of it though.

I'm making manicotti w/homemade crespelle shells (like crepes) and the meat will be a roast beef and a pork tenderloin that will cooked in tomato sauce until it's fork tender.

Doesn't anyone put cloves in their hams? I thought they were essential. I knew someone that used them and an orange duck sauce to cover their ham.

I had a battle with my aunt years ago about cloves in the ham. It was after my mother had died and I was preparing the Christmas meal that included ham. She asked me, "Aren't you going to cloves and pineapple on it?" I told my aunt that if she wanted she could do it but I wasn't. A few years later, heard through the grapevine that really ticked her off! lol

Chicago, Cloves are a pretty strong spice as you may well know. She should have understood that you were making a traditional meal like your mom did when she was alive. She could have added cloves to her own piece and heat it for a minute to pick up the flavor, but you can't escape that flavor if you put even one clove on the entire ham.
