Dome Land Wilderness

“Hey, I must be in a trip planning mode this afternoon ;) Anybody interested in doing an overnight or two night trip in the Dome Land Wilderness, Sequoia National Forest, CA early next summer?”

“Ziggy...when does Parker Pass open? Memorial Day??? I wish they would change their policy on those roads...back in the day we would enter through Jerkey Meadows to the Kern (GTW) as early as Easter in low snowpack years. I'll keep an eye on this one.”

“WindWalker, it's a liability issue with the county regarding the roads. Even if there's no snow there's usually a lot of rock slide activity going on. And the county doesn't have money to maintain them when there's not that great of a need to.

“This sounds like a pretty interesting area. I might be up for doing this wekend hike. Need to get in some hikes as a warm up to the High Sierra Trail trip.”

“I went to Domelands the past two springs. It is a great early spring Sierra trip. We went in early May and it was hot both trips. Highs in the 80\'s and lows in the 40\'s. Good flower displays, especially the first year. Came close to 2 rattlesnakes the first year and 1 last year, so be careful. One encounter was right on the trail, it was sunning itself on the PCT. Domelands is a Giardia hotspot due to lots of beavers, so bring a filter instead of chemicals or let the chemicals work for hours instead of minutes. I\'m going in again this year the first or second weekend in May. I\'ll let you know the conditions when I get back. This year we are going to hike completely around the domes. It is 25-30 miles I believe. Bear containers are not required, we had no problems using Ursacks.”

It looks like I may be able to make this after all. It will be a good relaxing hike before my TRT hike in July. I've moved my Canyonlands trip up to the first of May.

Songbyrd - carpooling would be great for obvious reasons. This is a pretty good drive.

“Are you referring to the upcoming Lost Coast hike or to the Dome Land hike? If Dome Land, we'll be headed south so I should drive down here. I currently live in Rocklin, but am considering moving back up to Yuba City due to money saving issues. By the time the Lost Coast hike comes up, I may be living up there and you can park your car at my place. The place I'm looking at is a very safe place. Yuba City isn't as bad as you've heard (at least parts of it) :)

“Bearcrossing, Can't go June 25-27. Diva campout already reserved for that weekend at Rollins. If the dates change, you should plan to join us Divas. A lot of fun. Looks like June is out for me on any weekend. You guys have fun and I'll catch you on another.”

My questions -What is the terrain like since I usually only day hike trails
What elevation are we talking about?
and are there any scarey cliffs...
As for outfitting- I have read the must have lists and can get that but don't know what other stuff is necessary.

“Ok, the terrain is best discribed as rolling hills. This area was burn out in '94? and it's still very open. That means it will be hot with very little shade but really nice views of some of the domes the wilerness is named after.
We'll be starting at 7820' and going to a high point of 7985' then camping at about 7090'. All in about 4 miles with NO cliffs, scary or otherwise.

“I'll probably be driving out there early Saturday morning and staying Saturday and Sunday nights out on the trail. I'm hoping that this loop trip with a side trip will accomodate both those who want to do just Saturday night on the trail and those who want to stay and explore more the second night.”

It's much faster that way then driving up from the West. Once you leave Porterville, it takes like 2 days to drive to the trailhead.”

Hikerchic would I be able to ride with you possibly? There is no way I could take our car that distance HA! it is a beat up old Tahoe subaru.

I have been watching this trip, sounds very interesting to me, and with the lower elevations sounds like a good early hike.
Do you all hike fast? I have never been on TT backpack before...Do you kind of just do your own thing as far as each one hiking there own pace and stopping when they feel like it? Sorry if these questions sound a bit silly”
