An Introduction
Hello everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself. I live in Bend, Oregon with my wife of 2+ years. Recently I decided to get back into decent shape and to get back into backpacking in earnest.

There are two reasons for this. First, my father died at 43 from a massive stroke, and my own blood pressure has always been slightly (though not dangerously) elevated. I am almost 35, so I am only about 8 years from the age he died at. The second reason is that backpacking used to be almost a religion with me, and when I was able to spend a few/several days in the wilderness I was a happier person.

Somehow over the past few years I got away from backpacking (marriage to a non-backpacker, heavy work schedule), gained bad eating habits, and drank too many microbrews. Now I weigh 210 pounds on a 5-foot 10-inch frame. My doc tells me I should weigh around 175.

The solution: I have begun doing strength training and cardio, and am eating better, though I still like a good microbrew now and then. I am planning to do a lot more backpacking in the future, with the full support of my wife. Hopefully I will reach my goal weight by next July.

I have two backpacking goals over the next two years. First, I am going to do a 5 day bp trip into the North Cascades National Park next August. Second, I am going to hike the Wonderland Trail in 2006.

The reason I am posting here and at backpacker.com is that I have been told that if you share your goals with others, it makes them more real in your mind, and you can gain strength from the encouragement and support of others. I also hope to make some new friends, and perhaps hike with some of you in the future.

What is this? The guy comes in here bellyaching about his weight and his condition and want us to cheer him on to his goals! And to top it off, he tells us that he has joined the other side, too. This guy is so bold he put his entire post in bold!

Look here, Hiker34Blue, this is not the Dear Abby Site nor a bellyaching site. This is trail talk and it looks like you've come to the right place. Dog-gone-it, you sound like one of us. Welcome, you fit in real good here. Report to the trip section immediately and get youself started on some of the TT trips.

But actually, because of your name, it is obvious that you have been here under a different name, or two, or more. So I have to cry,

TROLL!

calling someone a TROLL _is_ the TT welcome - always has been until they meet someone from here in person preferrably on a backpacking trip

yeah but is it fake mistletoe or the real true mistletoe?

I like watching mistletoe grow in a few of the trees near where I work - we can look out the second floor window and watch how fast it grows - remarkably fast

Wow, I didn't expect this much response within just a couple hours of my initial post! Thanks for the welcome. So I'm a TROLL until I hike with some of you? Hmmm...okay, I can live with that. Anyone interested in joining me for my Summer 05 trip in the North Cascades?

Until then, I will just be over here in the corner making troll-like grunting noises. Just throw me a piece of raw meat every once in a while so I don't feel lonely.

lol, if your signed up on the trip, the trip organizer usually sends emails to everyone that's signed up as the trip dates get near.

i hope you didn't take my post to be mean spirited, it wasn't meant that way at all.

Welcome aboard to BOTH boards ;-) I know I haven't had a chance to say hi on bp.com's board due to my work schedule lately.
Have you thought about joining up on one of our group hikes this spring? The PNWH is obnoxious, smelly, likes to eat well, etc...but we are more fun than a barrell of drunk monkeys to hike with.....and heck, it is about time we plan another Oregon trip!!
