tnf009 - Just recently moved to Georgia from where?

Check the "trips" page and sign up for your first TT hike. I vouch for everyone on those hikes.

Welcome to TT my friend! Have a look around and enjoy yourself. There is a great group of people here. Where are you from and what kind of expirience in the outdoors have you had? Tell us some stories, we would love to hear all about your adventures.

well i lived in north dakota for 2.5 years, spent alittle time in texas and grew up in the northwest prior to all that, as for experience mostly hiking and scrambling in the northwest and the badlans, and some hiking down in mexico. i grew up in the trails of the northern cascades.

Hi TNF,

What part of Georgia did you move to? I live in the extreme NW corner of Georgia, in Dade County, just SW of Chattanooga, TN.

I'd be interested in hiking with you. I can tell you about a few good trails.

Later,
Rob

Have you looked into South Tybee Island or Cumberland Island? I haven't tried South Tybee yet but will in the next few months. Cumberland Island is pretty nice, lots of trails and the northern end has very few people.

Maybe some of the Florida people can help you out with some hiking in northern Florida.

Valdosta?
I'm down in Jacksonville Fl.

Ok, just off the top of my head, you have about a hundred miles of the Florida trail less than a couple of hours away. The easiest to reach would be at the I75 I40 junction at Osceola National Forest and the Suwannee River section.

In your area of Georgia you have Providence Canyon State park to the west for a nice weekender hike with cool scenery, and a bit further north there is about 36 miles of the pine mountain trail.

Being new to the area and all just be aware it gets stinking hot come March-April. After that till it cools off on October be sure you hike where you can take a dip to cool off.

The Ocala NF hike is about, I dunno, say three hours south on I75? I'm not sure. Just look for Ocala on your road atlas. It's south of Gainesville right on I75. Real easy drive.

Actually you are in a pretty good location.
Pretty decent drive to the mountains or beach when it's hot and lots of trails nearby when it's not. Plus a ton of canoe and kayakable rivers nearby.

Dunno about Tally but in Jax there is Black Creek Outfitters and Army Navy Outdoors, of the two I prefer Black Creek. and Gainesvile has Braisingtons Trail Shop.

if you like cold and snowwy hikes there's one not too far from you in the Black Mountains of North Carolina on the Black Mountain Crest Trail. The trail is really difficult though and much of it is above 6,000 so it will be cold and snowwy. It's MlK weekend. It's probably only two hours from Atlanta. The trip leader wants those who are experienced and well equipped in extreme conditions to go with him. The guys that are going are all cool guys though. If I lived closer, I'd be on that trip for sure. It'll be a good one.
