Ice Age Trail
Has anyone hiked the Kettle Morain section of the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin? If so, any comments, observations, etc. Will there be water in the winter? Is the ranger station open and will parking be available? Any help would certainly be appreciated.

This person is pretty new so he probably doesn't know cmb. There is another guy and I can't remember his trail name...he's from the Green Bay area and his real name's Steve, his girlfriend's name is Tagalong...I'll get it, it's coming slowly...Yup, it's The Lorax...I think he's familiar with the Kettle Morraine. Keep bumping this thread to the top. Eventually it'll be read by someone that knows something...I tried.

The site has information and maps. All he needs is to make a telephone call to the Forest Headquarters, the most likely source for up-to-date answers to his question.

Steve is planning a spring or summer hike there and I believe he knows the area well..

the Lorax is looking into some info on backpacking there... and might have hiked there a weekend or two ago.

There's Northern Kettle Moraine and Southern Kettle Moraine. the Lorax is checking into the north unit. I've mt. biked a little in the southern unit.

All I know about it is that you need to reserve shelters way in advance. You don't have a shelter reservation, you don't backpack it. Or if someone already has the shelter reservation -- even if just one person -- you are SOL.

Kind of a silly system, if that is all correct.

Just don\'t speed in Wisconsin. The police will give you an expensive ticket even if you are a beautiful newspaper editor. Right, Lizs?

I have backpacked Kettle Moraine, but only in the late spring. The trails were relatively easy, water was available by pumps, and the triliums were great.

Yes, do not speed in my state like some of the southern Minnesota desperados are wont to do. Keep Wisconsin Green...with Minnesota money.

Ice Age Trail
I've hiked various sections of the Ice Age Trail. And, from my experience there are some areas where you will need to tote more water, as the distances between sources can be longer than 2 liters (of water.)
