I have been really active this past year, but I just eat too much. I have fat on top of my muscles - it's awful.

Getting old isn't easy - it's not just the weight gain. When I was a teenager I used to think that it would be great to be older because then I wouldn't get zits on my face anymore - well, now I'm older I find that it's possible to get a zit on a wrinkle on your face.

I'm hoping that the teaching profession helps me lose weight. Today was my first full day in the classroom, and I barely had time for lunch. And I'm not even the teacher! ....Smileygirl

Smileygirl, I had to rain on your optomism LOL but teaching will prolly do the opposite. You should see the teachers lounge goody tables where I work Holy cow!!!!!! Snacks galore, every occasion is a reason to eat. To keep myself from eating the stuff as a custodian I immediately (when my shift began) dumped it all. If not I would snack often. I have never seen a group where the vast majority are substantailly over weight excluding my last church.

Birch, those temptations aren't only in the teacher's lounge. They happen daily at the engineering place too. I just sit more at the engineering firm. Plus, teachers seriously don't have a whole lot of time to eat.

I'd like to keep my utopian view for just a little while longer. :)

food in the workplace? The hospital lab is terrible. 24/7 snacks in the lounge, pot lucks like you could not imagine. One year in Fairbanks, a few people in the lab took a gourmet baking course and had a buffett of treats matching those of the fanciest French bakery. In the Navy, we had many lab techs from the P.I. Pancit, pork adobo, roast pig....

Food is a problem in the workplace - especially around the holidays when everyone brings in the extra food they get as gifts and have leftover from parties.

Carrots are good, those 1-lb bags of shaved down, fake baby carrots. Just keep munching on those all the time. It's hard to gain/maintain weight when you pop a carrot every time you think of eating.

Interesting article

This goes contrary to what I had heard about Weight Watcher's recommendations, which was not to weigh every day, because you weight fluctuates up and down, and it can be counterproductive.

Of course, I still weigh myself every weekday.

Weight Watchers hired a firm to do some statistics for them. At the 5 year mark, less than 5% of "Weight Watchers" showed a significant drop in weight.

They don't advertise that.

Weight watchers online doesn't cost much and it helps me to choose the right foods. If I eat healthier, I can eat more. The healthier the food, the less points assigned to it and I track my points.

I am active - that's not the problem. So far this week, I've put in 10 hours of exercise made up of strenuous hiking and cycling.

Don't knock WW Sarge. It's methods help train in portion control and the support can't be beat. Some people need to be on a program to hold them accountable. Running and eating right is part of the program.

I've set my goal for late winter: 12-15 lbs.

Tho, a weight goal is not totally realistic because I'll be starting weights again in the next week or so... so I could gain in muscle what I lose in fat.

If I can get back on track w/ my running, I can drop the first 8-10 in a couple months. Someone help me get motivated!!!!

I need help motivating myself! LOL!

My motivation for running is that soon it will be the only daylight time I'll get on the weekdays. It's that time of year in Seattle where it's all gloom and short days. I hate this time of year.

pixaxe - I'm just reporting statistics. If those statistics show it's a waste, I'm going to mention it. If you only want to hear what you want to hear then you should lock your doors, shut your windows, turn off your television, and disconnect your computer.

To those that benefit from it - GREAT! That's awesome.

To those that think they have a better chance at losing weight on that than going it alone. Statistics say that's not the case.

Nothing wrong with facts pixaxe. Some people don't spend money on things without checking them out first - consumer reports, etc... Why not do that when it comes to your health? If you learned something and feel like you need to keep paying them money, fine. I hope you get healthier or enjoy yourself. Otherwise, don't try to prevent others from hearing statistics. Most people on here are adult enough to decide what to do with those statistics. I trust them to be adult enough to do what's right for them. Maybe you should to.

If people lose weight on a program then it works. I don't think it's weight watcher's problem that people gain back weight. If you go off a weight loss program (diet) and start eating too much, you can't blame the weight loss program for your mistakes.
wingding0

Weight Watchers (statistically) does not provide the correct instruction and motivation to stay on the diet wingding0. I should emphasize though that the 5 year mark mentioned above is NOT AFTER they got off the program. It's after 5 years ON Weight Watchers. Their clients are not losing the weight ON the program.

I agree completely with you that you cannot blame the weight loss program for your mistakes.

The reason those statistics are important is because they show that the program itself is not effective (for the most part) at helping people to become healthy. I'm not saying they aren't giving out good useful information, but for whatever reason, they aren't providing the necessary training to know how to lose weight and keep it off.

I believe you are absolutely right though, you can't blame them for your mistakes.

I've upped my running to where I've now averaged about 30 miles a week for the past 4-5 weeks. I think I've had one beer in the past 2 weeks. I'm eating slightly less at meals, and never have eaten much in the way of snacks.

Still the same weight....

Losing weight Sargeantslaughter's way
This will be short. Look under "view new pictures" in the pictures section and look at my 'Lone Star Hiking Trail East'(should be the newest one). Just read the caption to see how I lost 8 lbs in three days. Your right Sarge, getting out there and guttin' it out is the only way to stand. I feel like a 30 year old again. I'm going to do the western 50 miles by years end.

I've gained 7 lbs in just over a month. Stress! Also, I started eating high carbs again and stopped going to the gym as well as spending less time on the trail. The older you get the harder it is to keep the weight off.
But remember also, muscle weights more than fat. So if you are working it but staying the same weight it's probably due to muscle gain. ;) And that's a good thing.
Off to the gym now.

BTW
My food for the hike was govt. issued MRE's. They have all of what you need and no fluff. But be aware, when your under such physical strain you have to be disciplined enough to make yourself eat 'cause you will not feel hungry or have the desire to eat. Alot like hydration, every 20 minutes stop and swallow a couple good mouthfuls. If you stop sweating, you're in trouble.

the best way to lose weight is to not eat anything with a face. heart disease is how the animals protext themselves from humans even after they are dead.

ihave began to feel guilty about eating plants too. after all you have to kill them to eat tham and it makes me feel bad. i tried eating dirt but it tastes bad and makes me constipated. plus i am still killing little microogranisms that are in the dirt. so what do i do? i am hungry all the time.

do you think it would be okay to eat people? i don't feel bad when they die.

The old saying "a pound of flesh" actually was about the very thing - eating people, or rather a part of them. The tastiest part would be the buttocks, either side. Now all you have to do is convince someone that you could help them lose at least a pound. :) Bon Appetit.

I don't listen to statistics. I'm more likely to go by referral. And wingding, I lost 25 pounds on WW. And that was just following the points. I didn't actually attend, my coworker would tell me what they told her, etc. So good luck to ya! I think it's a great program.

Helping people that have problems moderating their eating by building structure around their diet is not a bad thing. I have known lots of people that did the Weight Watchers thing and it worked well for them. The trick is you can’t stay on Weight Watchers the rest of your life…

My personal choice is that I am in the "buck up, stop pigging out, and get out and run" camp. I do realize that not everyone can do this. My waistline will shrink and grow on any given year (right now it's at the "grow" end of the spectrum because of an injury, emotional stuff, etc).

That said, I generally support any dietary or exercise changes that are going to produce some sort of sustainable difference in the lifestyle of the person making those changes. I see this as being key.

Right, cause who is going to count points forever? But the thing is, by the time I lost my weight, my eating habits had changed for the better. I continued to eat far less portion wise and kept the weight off for the most part. (I gained 5 pounds back.) But that's ok.

http://www.diabetes.org/nutrition-and-recipes/nutrition/exchangelist.jsp

I am not good at explaing things, but in a nutshell,

Everything is broken down into exchanges and there is an actual list of foods and how much of each makes up an exchange. Then you space what you eat throughout the day. Ie. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner snack.
the coolest thing is when you get used to it you can plan your recipes around the number of excnanges.

You can litterally eat anything you want, just in moderation.

Replace one addiction with a more healthy addiction. For instance try replacing egg nog with pretty shoes. Everytime you have a craving buy a new pair of shoes and prance around in them a bit untill you forget that you wanted egg-nog. It works with other foods also.

I think I'd run out of closet space pretty quick, lol.

I get what I'm craving and have a little bit. I find if I don't I think about it and eat other stuff instead, trying to fill that void.

I got my body fat tested on Thursday at a health fair I was giving massages at. I was thinking it'd be up around 27-28%. It was 22.9%! Healthy range for a woman my age is 21-30%.

After school settles down a bit I think I want to start some weight training to help out with my joint issues. Any of you chicks have any books you really find helpful?
