Golden Eagle Trail-Pennsylvania NewYear' s-DayhikeView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 44 of 44 messages posted.
ring in the new year with a dayhike! “We're going to do a dayhike on the Golden Eagle Trail in North central Pennsylvania on Saturday (New Year's day). This is a trail that has it all. Good elevation gain, creek crossings, bushwack, vistas and gorges with waterfalls (i think). Should be a ton of fun and the weather should be really nice on Saturday to boot. I'll post some more details-directions ETC. Here is a map - courtesy of Pennsy - nice work! http://community.webshots.com/photo/122379718/240173983cAxqva I'm thinking we should meet at the trailhead around 9 Saturday morning. last edited: 12/30/04 4:09:36 PM” 4:08:13 PM 12/30/04 “ENS - I can meet you at 6am on 61. The new dunkin donuts near Cabelas? Stock up on caffeine and whatever and leave my car in the Cabela's lot? anyone else interested, plug Cammal, Pa into a Mapquest.com search. The trailhead is about 2.5 miles north of Cammal on rt 414.” 4:22:06 PM 12/30/04 “We went up the Golden Eagle Trail(GET) on the right side of Wolf Run, about 2 blocks in there's the side trail to go up the Bob Webber Trail to the vista. From the vista we bushwhacked straight down and got back on the GET. We then continued in a counterclockwise direction to finish the GET.” RichB” 4:22:10 PM 12/30/04 “sounds good to me. Morning coffee and donuts will be my treat!” 4:23:00 PM 12/30/04 Mr. M's pics from this hike 4:26:11 PM 12/30/04 “If you're gonna drive, I can buy the coffee and donuts. This also from RichB: Go up 44 north to 414 along Pine Creek. Park on the side of the road on 414 at the bottom of Wolf Run. The trailhead is not well marked. We had to search a bit before we found it.” With the recent rains and more on the way Friday, Bonnell Run is likely to be high and there are many stream crossings on that trail. The trail goes back and forth, one side to other, all the way down. Pennsy, may want to bring his Wiggys Waders just in case to make it through dry. I had my waders with me, but didn't use them because the water was still fairly low at that time. I'll bring waders, and if the stream isn't too wide, they should be sharable by tossing them back across.” 4:26:39 PM 12/30/04 Jmitch and RichB “hope you guys can make it.” 6:24:19 PM 12/30/04 “This also from Rich: "There is parking right on the side of the road at the bottom of Wolf Run on 414 and that's where we started. The sign is small and easily missed from the road. We found it by looking where Wolf Run flows into Pine Creek. At that point Pine Creek is right next to the side of the road, but there is room there to park." ” 7:01:56 PM 12/30/04 “Alright! RichB is going!” 7:06:35 PM 12/30/04 “Then I'm there even if ENS has to drag my dead carcass around the loop. See ya at DD's 6am!” 7:15:28 PM 12/30/04 “Hopefully, You'll be feeling better by Saturday.” 7:18:38 PM 12/30/04 “Pennsy, bring your gear sled lol” 7:25:00 PM 12/30/04 Lemme Axe You A Question...... “EarthNsky, see if my axe is in your trunk.” 7:27:24 PM 12/30/04 Marko “I just checked and yeah it's there. How did we miss that. You didn't go to the Gap?” 7:31:06 PM 12/30/04 “I just got back from Wolf Gap. The boys and I camped at the gap last night and hiked to Big Schloss today. A rotta rocks.” 7:33:31 PM 12/30/04 “awesome! wanna come with us on saturday?” 7:37:51 PM 12/30/04 “Saturday, hmmmmmmm? How many miles?” 7:41:14 PM 12/30/04 “9 mile hike. Pretty cool hike, weather should be good. If you can drive to Hamburg, PA, where I am meeting Pennsy, you can ride with me the rest of the way. Hamburg is probably a 130 mile drive for you and it would be a lot of driving for a dayhike. It maybe a straighter shot from Baltimore straight up 83 into Harrisburg and then up 15 to Williamsort” 7:47:07 PM 12/30/04 “Maybe.......maybe” 7:51:36 PM 12/30/04 “It's reported to be the best dayhike in PA. I just checked the weather and high temperature is predicted to be about 50. Looks nice for hiking and good for views at the vistas.” 7:51:55 PM 12/30/04 “yeah, Marko. and you'll be able to tell your grankids about the day you hiked the mighty Pennsy into the ground.” 8:03:02 PM 12/30/04 “Whuttaya, lame?” 9:42:53 PM 12/30/04 “not exactly. Just trying to shake some kind of flu bug.” 10:12:31 PM 12/30/04 “Hmmmmm, so maybe I could smoke your arse!” 10:23:36 PM 12/30/04 “i'm a little sick as well, but i hope to make it. no big falls on this trail, but lots of cascades and slides. maybe afterwards we can get a bite to eat at slate run inn, i think they rebuilt it.” 9:25:39 AM 12/31/04 “Hmmmmmmmm........” 9:33:23 AM 12/31/04 “cool, this is going to be a great hike. MarkO, how's it looking for you?” 10:06:22 AM 12/31/04 “I'm keeping my distance with all this sickness. There must be something going around.” 11:55:59 AM 12/31/04 “tomorrow is looking to be a really nice day and plenty of good hiking weather. High should be near 50 and it should be clear and sunny. I can't wait!” 12:21:22 PM 12/31/04 “Nice weather for January.” 12:34:02 PM 12/31/04 “next week temps could be near 65 down here in southern PA” 12:35:26 PM 12/31/04 “I didn't see that, but I did see mild temps in the 50's up here, so that sounds about right.” 12:38:22 PM 12/31/04 “Hmmmmmmm......it's a possibility.” 1:01:01 PM 12/31/04 “it'll be quite a contrast from our hike 2 weeks ago. lol” 1:14:22 PM 12/31/04 “Whoa!!! Mapquest says it's 198.89 miles!!! Where is Highway 61 ?? ...not the one in Minnesota.” 1:17:55 PM 12/31/04 “lol, hwy 61 is north from Reading. Probably 120 miles from you. Probably easier to take a straight shot north from Baltimore. It's 150 miles from where I'm meeting Pennsy.” 1:26:10 PM 12/31/04 “sorry. gotta pick batman luke up from the airport.” 1:54:53 PM 12/31/04 “even though we're not backpacking, I'm going to bring my jetboil stove and an enerta meal for lunch tomorrow. I'm excited to try out my new stove!” 2:19:22 PM 12/31/04 “I'm in! Will drive out with Rich B. See the rest of youans there.” 4:29:17 PM 12/31/04 “awesome, see you there tomorrow!” 5:19:28 PM 12/31/04 “Sorry I didn't make it. I was coughing up blood and was feeling worse. Pennsy, I called information to get your number, but it was unlisted. Sorry again. I'm feeling better now. Hope you all had a good time. I hope to see some great pics, it was a nice day.” 11:50:32 AM 1/02/05 “hope whoever went on this trip had fun.” 12:02:25 PM 1/02/05 “EVERYone who went on this trip did indeed have fun. It was a glorious day and a wonderful way to start 2005. I didn't get home until late last night and I just got home from picket duty, and with a family gathering this afternoon, I won't get my pics up until later. I'm sure ENS will get a report up today and everyone took pics. Jeff - I hope you're feeling better. We waited a few minutes for you and left a note, so don't worry about not making the trip. We missed you though. I only have a cell phone now so that's why you couldn't get my number. I'll have to email it you so you'll have it.” 12:25:03 PM 1/02/05 “Jeff, no sense trying to hike when you are feeling really sick and just wind up getting worse. Glad to hear you are feeling better. We had excellent weather and great hike. It didn't feel like New Year's Day with temperatures in the 50's. The creeks weren't running as high as I thought they would be so we didn't need waders to cross. There were some good side trails that would make a nice dayhike or overnighter too.” 2:54:01 PM 1/02/05
