Golden Eagle Trail-Pennsylvania NewYear' s-Dayhike

“We're going to do a dayhike on the Golden Eagle Trail in North central Pennsylvania on Saturday (New Year's day). This is a trail that has it all. Good elevation gain, creek crossings, bushwack, vistas and gorges with waterfalls (i think). Should be a ton of fun and the weather should be really nice on Saturday to boot. I'll post some more details-directions ETC.

“We went up the Golden Eagle Trail(GET) on the right side of Wolf Run, about 2 blocks in there's the side trail to go up the Bob Webber Trail to the vista. From the vista we bushwhacked straight down and got back on the GET. We then continued in a counterclockwise direction to finish the GET.”

Go up 44 north to 414 along Pine Creek. Park on the side of the road on 414 at the bottom of Wolf Run. The trailhead is not well marked. We had to search a bit before we found it.”

With the recent rains and more on the way Friday, Bonnell Run is likely to be high and there are many stream crossings on that trail. The trail goes back and forth, one side to other, all the way down. Pennsy, may want to bring his Wiggys Waders just in case to make it through dry. I had my waders with me, but didn't use them because the water was still fairly low at that time.

I'll bring waders, and if the stream isn't too wide, they should be sharable by tossing them back across.”

"There is parking right on the side of the road at the bottom of Wolf Run on 414 and that's where we started. The sign is small and easily missed from the road. We found it by looking where Wolf Run flows into Pine Creek. At that point Pine Creek is right next to the side of the road, but there is room there to park." ”

“I just got back from Wolf Gap.

The boys and I camped at the gap last night and hiked to Big Schloss today.

How many miles?”

“9 mile hike. Pretty cool hike, weather should be good. If you can drive to Hamburg, PA, where I am meeting Pennsy, you can ride with me the rest of the way. Hamburg is probably a 130 mile drive for you and it would be a lot of driving for a dayhike. It maybe a straighter shot from Baltimore straight up 83 into Harrisburg and then up 15 to Williamsort”

“It's reported to be the best dayhike in PA. I just checked the weather and high temperature is predicted to be about 50. Looks nice for hiking and good for views at the vistas.”

“i'm a little sick as well, but i hope to make it. no big falls on this trail, but lots of cascades and slides.

“lol, hwy 61 is north from Reading. Probably 120 miles from you. Probably easier to take a straight shot north from Baltimore. It's 150 miles from where I'm meeting Pennsy.”

“even though we're not backpacking, I'm going to bring my jetboil stove and an enerta meal for lunch tomorrow. I'm excited to try out my new stove!”

“EVERYone who went on this trip did indeed have fun. It was a glorious day and a wonderful way to start 2005. I didn't get home until late last night and I just got home from picket duty, and with a family gathering this afternoon, I won't get my pics up until later. I'm sure ENS will get a report up today and everyone took pics.

Jeff - I hope you're feeling better. We waited a few minutes for you and left a note, so don't worry about not making the trip. We missed you though. I only have a cell phone now so that's why you couldn't get my number. I'll have to email it you so you'll have it.”

We had excellent weather and great hike. It didn't feel like New Year's Day with temperatures in the 50's. The creeks weren't running as high as I thought they would be so we didn't need waders to cross.
There were some good side trails that would make a nice dayhike or overnighter too.”
