Disclaimer: This is a car-camping trip, so if you have nothing nice to say, then don't read the report : P

Thursday, December 30, 2004

I left work around 2:30pm and went home to gather all my stuff and leave to meet Mapleleaf at the Batona Campsite in the Pine Barrens (Wharton State Forest). Left my house around 4pm and got there around 6pm. Mapleleaf still hadn't even gotten home from work to pack and leave yet, so I was up for a few hours by myself. It was pitch dark by the time I got there so I set up camp with my headlights from my car. Took my time since I knew I'd be bored for a little while. After setting up, I ate some dinner, and then started a fire, which was roaring after about 10 minutes. Pretty good wood. I basically just sat around and enjoyed nature while waiting for her to show up.

Mapleleaf finally arrived at 9:15pm and joined the party. From being alone for so long, I joked with her that I became a savage and that she better watch her back. When she pulled up, I was sitting practically in the fire carving a stick to roast my weiner on (the hot dog kind). She said I looked scarey.

We ate some hot dogs, talked a bunch and she got drunk.... hence the title of the trip report. I didn't enjoy the spirits... law of the south beach diet. No alcohol for 2 weeks. I'm sure I'll survive. I had a blast either way.

Slept in and finally got out of our tents around 10am or so. Cooked some eggs with mushrooms, sausage, and canadian bacon and enjoyed breakfast.

When Mapleleaf decided to turn her car on she realized her battery was dead... DOH! She apparently had left the dome light on all night without realizing it. She flagged down a truck that happened to be riding by the dirt road that was nearby to help her jump the car. Larry and Pop were their names... from Alabama and proud of it! When Maple showed them her digital camera, Larry says to Pop, "Oh, hey, Pop, it's one of them digitals." I guess ya had to be there.

Anyway, to make a long story short, they jumped her car, packed up, burnt our trash, and rode home our separate ways.

Awesome night for my last bag night of the year! Here's to more in 2005.

yea i liked it a lot. it's a 2 person tent and has a LOT of storage pockets in it believe it or not and i really like that cause i always have stuff that i want with me in the tent. it has a large storage pocket above the door and then 3 smaller ones.

Sounds nice and looks nice too. Good that it has a vestibule. I always like a tent with a vestibule. I have a small 2 man without one and use a small siltarp over the door, but one attached is easier to set up.
RichB

yes a lot easier to set up. i can't use tents without vestibules... gotta have one.

Me too, I got used to them over the years. I improvise the 6X8 tarp on that one tent and it works out OK. It's old so I don't use it much anymore, but I installed a new floor in it so it's still good.

Scorch, Yes, I used that pack on the Chuck Keiper Trail last month. I might make another one the exact same size sometime next year only in black packcloth with royal blue or silver trim. While the water resistance of the sil nylon is nice, I like packcloth much better for a pack material.

sounds like a good plan, rich. you should start making them to sell! i'm sure you'd have a ton of buyers on this site.

Everybody makes fun of Bama, til someone needs a redneck. Glad someone from the 205 could help you out.

Car camping can be great fun. I love it. Glad yall had fun.

I'm a little disappointed no one pointed out that Scorch used the phrase, "Good wood," and "weiner" within 3 sentences of each other.

Now that the holidays are over it's time to get back on WW and count points. I've gained 20 of the 30 I lost 2 years ago. The main thing is that I have to get back in the habit of exercising. It's funny how when you get in a stress situation and need to work a bunch the exercise is the first thing to go when it's the thing you most need to hang onto.
