I carried my kids last year and it was ok. Some people would probably criticize me for it, but my kids never have been really what I'd call "sheltered". The only thing is there IS drinking goin on, lots of it. They had a blast (the kids that is). My pics are on webshots, link in my profile.

I'm probably not going to bring my kids this time around though. I'll have more fun not having to be responsible.

yeah roam your kids did have a blast. I feel they hear all the cussing anyway, with or without us. Might as well be with us.

I actually don't cuss in front of them, (yeah big surprise, but I don't) still I am not gonna shelter them from cuss words.

Just like I am not gonna shelter them from you guys. That alone is scary.

take them and decide how you feel about it. It's rough though..so be warned.

lol, yeah, they had seen people drinking before and heard prolly everything they heard there too. It was probably a bit more "educational" than i would have chosen, but oh well - it didn't kill them. Alex had a watergun fight with that guy "eats" and they both got soaked, we swam in the creek and all had a blast. Sarah asked if we were going (she thought it was funny that Carlette's tequilla got poured out). I told her that i might go while she went to her moms, she was ok with that.

"So I can bring the kids?"

sure. just dont expect a family atmosphere. most thru-hikers are rated-r, especially a campground full of em

thats a good description - it'll be a rated R weekend.

Cool. I constantly get yelled at by the old lady for letting the kids watch movies and TV shows they shouldn't see. I remember being a kid though and that sheltered attitude my parents had was retarded considering everything that went on behind their backs. I'd rather not be that parent. Anyway, my wifes schedule determines whether I make trips so it's always nice to have the option of bringing the kids when she has to work.

u are goign this year too right?

Hope the outfitters are cheaper this year. they didn't have that many great deals last year. the year before that was another story.

I hope we'll have great weather this year. would make the water fight so much more fun. Not that it could be even more fun then last year.

oh...anyone bringing oysters?

the $40 vasque trail shoes were a good deal. They fit great for around town, but I can't wear them on the trail since there is no room in the toebox.

Yeah, I am going. I am planning on hiking the Georgia section of the AT in mid-march, so hopefully I will know a lot more of the thruhikers this year.

I will probably bring oysters again. It was cool to see all those people who had never eaten one before give it a try.

we don't wanna do the woodstock campsite this year..we were in a cabin last year, are you all gonna do the hippie fest or do other things? We want to be more social this year...but not in the mudpit

yeah, the campground with all the freaks is the place to be, close to the vendors, where the big campfire is, all the thru hikers.

This year bring extra tents for people who don't get there early. Set them up as a marker for the spots. Then when others arrive they can take them down and put their own up. Last year I got there late and got the last tiny spot...then Smokygirl got there even later and had to put her tent up touching other tents...really tight space.

roam, cool...i'm game. I really would love to get at least a little hiking done. Nice that the kids are old enough now to stay at home alone for a couple of hours, so I can leave early. LOL

hyway...I say that everytime, and one day I will get a kick in the ass from hubby. LOL. He'll get over it. Does everytime.

Dub...I ain't bringing extra tents. You know how much I hate cleaning and drying them? Hell no!!! YOU can bring as many tents as you want though!!!

we need a TT sign. Simple. Maybe a huge bedsheet with "trailtalk" written on it??

We should prod Matt into having a Latta Outdoors Booth on exhibit. Then we should get him to have a big banner made up - one for his booth and one for our campsites!

well, that far in the future is kinda vague for me, but what the ...., i wanna go. Only one problem, my three months vacation from the NG is up in may. Hmmm.....guess i better start setting it up now. Yeah, i go and risk my life for my country and they cant even give us a decent party or amount of time off. NG SUCKS!

well
Yeah, it sucks! And the mayor of charlotte promised us on heck of a party too. So far he hasnt provided. I think he was blowing smoke. Hmmm, i take it more car camping and not so much hiking. im from statesville (hr n or charlotte on 77) so a drive isnt out of the question. btw, I NEED DIRECTIONS! or better yet ADDRESSES for the campground. and i may be able to car pool others as well. Have to see if money comes through for SUV. Oh yeah, im 21 but i drive like im 50. GET OVER IT! LOL! Seriously, pack for day hikes and car camping?
backpackerbryan
11:59:25 PM
1/28/05

yeah, pack for dayhikes if you want, but the "campground" is about a mile maybe less from town, where the vendor's all set up like a "midway".

Its basically a camping party. A lot of fun, all the thru hikers on the AT hang out and its just a really fun weekend.

Scroll back thru the thread and theres a link somewhere for the trail days website.
Its in Damascus VA.

btw, i used to live in Greensboro.

right now, im leaning towards staying at the Methodist hostel, "The Place", instead of the campground. i really wanna be close to the center of the action

anybody know anything about the fate of the side track cafe?

she can touch my tent with her tent anytime!

crash bang

I think there is action all over the place on that weekend. Depends on what kind of group you want. The Place is probably all thru-hikers, past and present, but the campground is a mixture of everyone, plenty of food, gear reps (handing out freebies), a swimming hole, showers, huge bonfire with drums, shakers, those big bamboo pipe things, and hippie chicks dancing around a fire. (It also has cops that will dump out your liquer if you leave it out in the open, so drink all you want, just keep the bottle out of sight)

The actual festival site is closer than town, maybe 1/2 mile away.
