Hey Scortchfire!View Messages“We just adopted a couple birds....parakeets. Help!” 11:38:49 AM 1/01/05 “Parakeets are very easy to care for. Diet consists primarily of spiders and scorpions...just put a few in the blender.” 11:44:29 AM 1/01/05 “hahaha! I just got through chassing one all over the house......I thought their wings were clipped!” 12:16:50 PM 1/01/05 “we now have 42 animals....I think we need kids LOL” 1:17:57 PM 1/01/05 “Do you own another house near Mataharihiker in St. Croix Falls, Wi?” 1:37:58 PM 1/01/05 “no....why?” 1:41:15 PM 1/01/05 “first off, get them clipped! it'll be a whole lot easier to tame them. don't know what you want to know about care for them, so ask me questions, lol. as far as diet goes, most people put their birds on seed... which is bad because birds tend to pick out only 1 seed they like and eat that one only out of the mix and they don't get the nutrition that they need. plus seed is very fattening. i have all my birds on a pelleted diet (you can get the colored pellets by zupreem or kaytee at any pet store.. they like the colored ones better normally). they only get seed for treats, 1 time per day or every other day. do you have them in the same cage? do u know whether or not they're male or female? if you have 2 females in the same cage, they may kill each other. if you have a male and a female in the same cage, they will breed. if you have 2 males, you should be fine. the way you can tell whether they are male or female is to look at their cere (where they're nostrils are). if it's pink or tan, it's a female. if it's blue or purple, it's a male. good luck!!!! what did u name them?” 1:51:26 PM 1/01/05 “Howie and troy, they are both males :) The kit came with seeds but we will get the pellets. Hey, can I feed them grapes?” 2:56:55 PM 1/01/05 “yes,... mostly any kind of fruit is good for them. avoid anything like onions, onion powder, avocado, eggplant, tomatoes, alcohol (duh)... etc. oh also avoid seasonings, including things with too much salt (crackers, salted peanuts, etc) and things with too much sugar. they also cannot digest anything that's carbonated like soda, sparkling water, etc. they can and should be given people food, it's really good for their health. some good food to give them: grapes, apples (NO apple seeds), oranges, cantoloupe, broccoli, string beans, carrots, chicken, pasta without the sauce, pizza crust, things like that. if you aren't sure if you should give them whatever it is you're eating, then don't. congrats on your fildren!” 3:49:38 PM 1/01/05 “and post pictures!” 3:50:14 PM 1/01/05 Why? “St. Croix Falls is where the people live that had 400 cats in their house, 3 to 4" of cat feces on the kitchen counters, etc. Mataharihiker lives nearby. I thought you might share a common trait with those folks.” 5:02:24 PM 1/01/05 “no cats for us. Every cat we try seems to just disapear” 5:19:53 PM 1/01/05 “scortch it was so cute but I think my birds are gay. they are both male but one was feeding the other and grooming it :S” 5:31:54 PM 1/01/05 “scotchfire?” 5:37:32 PM 1/01/05 “ ”8:13:29 PM 1/01/05 “LOL where did you find that?” 8:18:06 PM 1/01/05 “Sweetums melts butter? This just keeps getting better and better.” 8:36:23 PM 1/01/05 “better watch it geo, she may turn on you at any time!!” 8:38:39 PM 1/01/05 “Nightmare on Elm Street, ... Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!” 8:40:57 PM 1/01/05 ““scortch it was so cute but I think my birds are gay. they are both male but one was feeding the other and grooming it :S” awww that's so cute! it's not a "sexual" thing though, so your birds may or may not be gay. it's more of a bonding experience (to groom another bird and such). sweetums my arse!” 5:35:44 AM 1/02/05 “dang - you are calling your arse sweetums - kinky” 11:00:32 AM 1/02/05 “Just remember, it's only kinky the first time.” 11:04:14 AM 1/02/05 “kinky is a fun werd” 1:12:29 PM 1/02/05 “I hd to toss out a kinky hose. There was no point in keeping it for next year. I'll just buy a new one.” 7:04:41 AM 1/03/05 “scortch, how the hell do i train these birds to be used to people? Theya re biting the hell out of me. The blue one is easy to catch and put back into his cage (though he bites teh hell out of me) cause he does have clipped wings. The green one can fly (so I give him flying time in a safe room) but He is a #&%!$ to catch as he can fly. When I do catch him he bites the hell out of me LOL” 9:42:05 AM 1/11/05 “Maybe they just hate you?” 9:43:55 AM 1/11/05 “Anybody ever see the episode of "King Of The Hill" where Dale gets a falcon and every time he tells it to do something, it attacks Bill? SC was kind enough to remind me of that, giving me the day's biggest chucklle yet! Thank you!” 9:50:49 AM 1/11/05 “I't aint funny! LOL I have wounds LOL” 9:57:22 AM 1/11/05 “Poor baby! I feel for you! I still want to thank you for the yuks!” 10:09:24 AM 1/11/05 “first off, young grasshopper, have patience! it takes a while, especially with untame parakeets because they were 99% likely to not have been hand raised by humans, so you are a complete foreign object to them. it took my parakeet a few months to actually be used to people and to step onto my finger and actually not try and fly away afterwards. he's now the most FRIENDLIEST bird ever.. granted, he's 8 years old, lol. but seriously, it just takes time. don't give up on them! here's a tip for ya.... it's a LOT harder to train to parakeets that live in the same cage together. it's a lot easier to hand train them when they live separately, because they bond to each other and want nothing to do with people. as far as the one flying, you should really get his wings clipped. they usually do that where you buy them, so you could prob take him back and tell them u want his wings clipped. either that or any vet hospital or pet store does it. they are a hell of a lot easier to tame when they're wings are clipped cause they can't get away from you!” 5:55:14 PM 1/11/05 “Wouldn't the local SPCA do that too, or do they not do birds?” 7:56:15 PM 1/11/05 “they might. i never really thought of that.” 8:41:09 PM 1/11/05 “Yo! where are ya? havent seen you post in too long :(” 4:44:22 PM 8/16/05 “Last I heard, she was headed for Aruba.” 4:54:12 PM 8/16/05 “I didn't know she was hanging out with TO.” 5:56:00 PM 8/16/05 “Is she still dating that Japanese dude?” 6:00:27 PM 8/16/05 “lol, i don't come here too much anymore, tired of the BS :( aruba isn't until october, unfortunately!!! he wasn't japanese, lol, he was just stationed in japan and no, we broke up a month ago.” 9:53:39 PM 8/16/05 “SF, just ignore the bs :) We like you too much to have you disapear :)” 9:57:19 PM 8/16/05 “: D just call me scorchfire copperfield *poof*” 10:00:30 PM 8/16/05 “SF, I wanted to ask ya bout cockatiels- when the eggs hatch should I let mom and pop tend em or should I hand feed?” 10:02:09 PM 8/16/05 “awwwww scorrrrrcccchhhhhhyyyyyy!” 10:02:57 PM 8/16/05 “let the mom tend to them until she pushes them away, then take the babies out and handfeed.. do u know how to handfeed properly? because if not done properly u can aspirate them and they can die : (” 10:03:37 PM 8/16/05 “y2, my love, where have you been all my life??” 10:03:47 PM 8/16/05 “Scortch I have hand fed other birds, Including my blueJay so I assume it would be similar?” 10:04:33 PM 8/16/05 “waitin for you!!!” 10:06:08 PM 8/16/05 “....and then she was gone, and the heartbroken English gentleman made his lonely pilgrimage into the arms of Morpheus.” 10:19:15 PM 8/16/05 “hmmm, it really depends. u have to use a syringe and stick it down their crop so they can pump their beak over it. i have returned, y2” 10:23:02 PM 8/16/05 “thank GOD your back! when you comin' out West to hike with me?” 12:40:05 AM 8/17/05 “as soon as i can afford it,.. this aruba trip drained me of whatever i had in the bank lol” 1:08:12 AM 8/17/05 “are there mountains in aruba?” 1:13:36 AM 8/17/05
