Gemini
Jeez, Gemini, I just arrived home this morning. I need to catch up on a lot of things. But I'll check all the submissions to this string and post an updated list within a couple of weeks.

BTW, even in your sleeping bag, a night spent in an airport terminal building does not count. Sorry.

1 night. Before you burst into laughter...
So far in 2005 I have accomplished more in 6 months than in the past 2 years. The year is only half done, so I am looking forward to more summer and fall nights in the woods. The asphalt is calling to my bicycle in the meanwhile, will report back if this thread is still alive then.

O jeez, stikmon is after some more double bag nights to boaster his year's count.

LOL.

BTW, stikmon, double bag nights are not acceptable in counting your bag nights. When I post the tally, I only report the bags nights completed as posted by the individuals.

Hey...I haven't done so yet but does car camping count?

:D = joke :) I have made 11 bag nights this year...more soon to come!
Spirit Coyote

sandyann - Inside a vehicle should not count. In the open, under a tarp, in a tent, etc. and in a sleeping bag, while in a campground, at a trailhead, etc., counts. If the sleeping bag would normally be used, if the temperature were lower, it's OK. Trail shelters count, but not cabins. However, use your own judgement.

Presented are my personal guidelines. I am not making the rules. I just, occasionally, set up a list of what people have reported as completed bag-nights. After the end of the year I will provide a list in order of bag nights, as well. But I'm avoiding it during the year so as not to encourage a competition. This string is merely a place to record and keep track of your individual bag nights, albeit in public.

Why I'm doing it is a mystery to me. Perhaps it was to write a simple "batch" program. I'm using HTML's tags "pre" ... "/pre" around the list in order to keep the columns' appearance. But with this I have not found a way to eliminate the double spacing that results. If anyone knows of a way, please let me know. Thanks.

i dunno

not as many as last year, i know that

when youre doing an ultra-long distance, its hard to know what counts

if you sleep at a hostel in your own sleeping bag because they just provide bunks not beds does that count?

what about in your tent at somebodys house or hostel?

personally, i dont count anything in civilization

what about the dungeon at lake of the clouds? or white house landing in the 100 mile wilderness?

so many permutations of sleeping arrangements

Crash Bang - Some good questions!

I am merely trying to put the reported numbers of completed bag nights into an alphabetical list every month or so. You can make your own decisions about what you want to count. I think you're on the right track.

It seems that most hostels are buildings, like homes, so I would not count them for myself. Likewise, I sleep in a sleeping bag at home, but I do not count those nights. Most shelters I count, but I feel that they should have an outdoor exposure other than doors or windows. Anything out-of-doors, like a tent in the neighbor's yard, or even, your yard sounds OK to me. I have used a sleeping bag inside homes of friends, but I don't count those nights as there was no direct exposure to the outside.

Since you are the one present at all these situations, you are the one most qualified to decide whether or not they qualify as bag nights. However, I do not believe in double bag nights.
"I'm getting old."

2 bag nights and over 60 miles for breast cancer!

One thing for sure-- I'm in greater shape this year than last! Amazingly, I was able to hoist and walk with a fully loaded (35 lbs) back pack even after each day's 20 mile "hike" in the concrete jungle! :-)
