Snowshoeing in Yosemite

Tekdude and I postponed a trip you may be interested in...it was going to be a 3 day trip too...Snowshoe to Panorama Point, basecamp there and maybe try Mt Star King.
from the topos it looks like you would have a unique view of Half Dome and Nevada Falls.”

“Yes, your killing me!!! I've wanted to get out to Glacier Point for the past three years. Had two attempts and never made either for various reasons. Although I'm now walking fairly well...no cane, my knees are still sore and swollen and I still can't get on the ground (i.e sleeping bag) yet so I'll have to probably wait until next year. :(

The road to Glacier is groomed, so the 11 mile trip won't be too bad. There's always Crocker Point, Dewey Point or several others.

Take lots of pictures. Maybe I'll at least drive up to see whoever shows up. It will be a good excuse to get out there...as if I need one! :)”

“I am going to Glacier point next week with a group of people from work. We will be snowshoeing and camping about 5 1/2 miles up from Badger Pass parking lot and then going to Glacier Point, and other spots for a day hike.

The road is groomed all the way to Glacier Point for CC Skiers.”

“That could be a great trip, Wingding0 and all, if the weather cooperates. I did it on XC skiis in 1971. We skiid from Badger Pass parking lot to a forest service cabin, and spent the night there. Man, a cabin is the way to go. You need to have a forest service connection, though. Then we skied out to Glacier POint, and spent several nights under the gazebo. The weather was clear, and the views were just incredible.

That was my first time ever on XC skiis. I bought a pair of US Army wooden skiis at Salvation Army, took of the metal edges, and ripped 1/2 inches off each side on a table saw. Then I screwed a binding bracket on the skis, that had a strap over the toe of the boots. They had zero camber, weighed a ton, and took a lot of wax to wax them. They were almost snowshoes, but they allowed me to trudge out there.

“Somebody was asking me last week to report on snow conditions in Yosemite, but I can't remember who it was or what thread it was on.

Well, the snow sucked. BowlderGal and I did one short XC ski loop out to Summit Meadow, then back via the actual Badger Pass. Everything had been melted and refrozen about a hundred times, so it was awful. But they should be gettin' hammered pretty good with some fresh stuff right now, which pretty much makes my report moot.

BTW, BowlderSon did a great job on a snowboard for the first time, as did BowlderGal on downhill skis. I just got a lift ticket and worked on my downhill skills a bit - I did pretty well and had fun. We all got to ski/ride together most of the day yesterday....

Oh, I also took a few short digital videos. This one is a little shaky, but pretty good. It's shaky because I was taking it as I skied down behind BowlderSon. It's about 3 megs and I think will open directly in Internet Explorer or will launch Mediaplayer (or whatever). If not, just right-click, save, blah blah blah....

“Thanks, Bowlder, that was me who asked about the snow. I actually called Badger Pass this morning and they said they are getting fresh snow and it hasn't been raining on them. I didn't think of the melt-refreeze cycle. Oh, well, if it's awful, we'll bail and what? Sleep in the car?”

“Nice pictures of all of you bowlderman! Looks like you still had a nice time even with the bad snow. Just now starting to stick at Tahoe..so hopefully it will continue to snow, the snow out in the forest is like solid ice almost.

Hi madeintahoe! Yeah, we had a blast. Those blue mittens are Goretex mitten shells - they worked great for BowlderSon since he was falling on his hands a lot. They really kept his mittens dry.”

“We're driving up to the Bug Hostel on Fri, then out to Badger Pass on Sat. The plan is to ski to Glacier Point on Sat, spend the night, and ski back on Sun. Then we will spend Sun at the Bug Hostel again. It looks like it will be really nice.
