My topo program (maptech) is showing two AT shelters at Spence Field.
One at: 035° 31' 42.5 N 083° 43'54.44W
Two at: 035° 33' 39.69 N 083° 43'32.16W

Is this so, or is one of them an old site that the shelter has been removed from?

Both are by springs.

There's is a shelter and a second structure somewhere in the vicinity. A group of park and maintenance people admitted staying there one night. I don't know where the second structure is located, yet, but from the shelter, these people went towards the AT. It might be located somewhere past or on the other side of the pin cherry orchard.

Spence has a new outhouse.

How far are those two sets of coordinates from each other?

The shelters are about 3000 feet apart. Both on the south side of the AT.
The second one listed is the ghost shelter.
I've stayed at the first one listed.

The second one is about due east of the first (2116 feet as the crow flies).

I pulled up and aerial photo of the location of each and you can plainly see the first one. The second looks more like a clearing with the shelter being very hard to see-if it is there at all.

TD, if you have a GPS, you can put the locations above in and it should put you right on the spot. I'm going up there this spring. I'll definitely check it out.

Interesting.

There are various stuctures all over the park but I didn't think they had one on Spence.
