That's pretty funny. I've always wanted to have a close encounter with a whale, but I'm not sure that's what I had in mind.

It looked as though the guy recovered. No word on whether he was hurt at all.

Funny. We were kayaking in Monterey Bay this summer (there were 4 kayaks in our group) & had a seal following one kayak in particular... actually kept "nosing" like it was going to jump on! (they alwaus rest on the buoys). The tour leader / naturalist kept "motivating" us to very quickly paddle away, she didn't want it to become habituated to humans, they would end up w same problem we have with bears, can't allow them to lose their fear of humans. It was a pretty neat experience though, followed us all over the bay!

Is that real? It reminds me of the PJ danglin from the helecopter in SF Bay and the HUGE Great White jumping after him.

Do you think the guy in the kayak soiled his pants?

I could see it...and I did...over and over...was that what I thought near the tail or just the color of the underbelly! I will have second thought about my yellow kayak being a safe color...can you imagine what would happen to my folding kayak! br-r-r...

It's called "yummy yellow"....seems they had a test with sharks....dummies in yellow coloured diving suits were consistantly bitten more times, than other dummies in different coloured suits.

Yellow colour is easier to spot from an aircraft though.

How the heck do you keep your composer to pop up right yourself and kick it high gear. Not realizing what happened til you see the film

Well, since the kayak jumping whale was an ad for some Japanese company and seriously doctored (way too large whale in sun on a grey, cloudy day) I find this latest news much more entertaining as it seems it might have some basis in reality..a novel thing on the internet...

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (AP) -- An enterprising young killer whale at Marineland has figured out how to use fish as bait to catch seagulls -- and shared his strategy with his fellow whales.
[...]
First, the young whale spit regurgitated fish onto the surface of the water, then sank below the water and waited.

If a hungry gull landed on the water, the whale would surge up to the surface, sometimes catching a free meal of his own.
[...]
Within a few months, the whale's younger half brother adopted the practice. Eventually the behavior spread and now five Marineland whales supplement their diet with fresh fowl, the scientist said.
[...]
The capacity to come up with the gull-baiting strategy and then share the technique with others -- known as cultural learning in the scientific world -- was once believed to be one of those abilities that separated humans from other animals.

Have you ever seen the footage of how orcas hunt in packs and use bubbles to herd fish? Very interesting stuff.
