Now that we've all had a week to reflect on the year that was, what did you buy and how much did you dig it?

I got a few winners:

Keane

Modest Mouse

U2 - HTDAAB Great album. It gets better the more i listen to it.

Maroon 5 - Songs for Jane (?) we got this one right before a week long trip to the beach with friends. I listen to it now and I am taken back to that week.

BEST FRIGGIN ALBUM OF 2004: Snow Patrol - Final Straw. Very dreamy and melodic with great distorted guitar riffs and a solid punch. Get it it\'s still on sale

To be honest, I don't think I bought a single CD all year. In fact I can't remember the last time I bought one. Maybe it was in early 2003.

I certainly haven't bought one released this year...

I bought a new Placido Domingo CD that has a great performance of "Vesti la giubba" on it, does that count?

Dude! Just last night the band at the pub had a copy of one of Underworlds albums playing while they were setting up. It was the first time I had heard it and loved it. He's making me a copy this week.
Weird.

Vesti la giubba,
e la faccia in farina.
La gente paga, e rider vuole qua.
E se Arlecchin t'invola Colombina,
ridi, Pagliaccio, e ognun applaudirà!
Tramuta in lazzi lo spasmo ed il pianto;
in una smorfia il singhiozzo il dolor, Ah!
Ridi, Pagliaccio,
sul tuo amore infranto!
Ridi del duol, che t'avvelena il cor!

English translation

Put on the costume,
and the face in white powder.
The people pay, and laugh when they please.
and if Harlequin invites away Colombina
laugh, Pagliaccio, and everyone will applaud!
Change into laughs the spasms of pain;
into a grimace the tears of pain, Ah!
Laugh, Pagliaccio,
for your love is broken!
Laugh of the pain, that poisons your heart!

American Idiot is actually #2 on Billboard right now.

While that's a really good album, and so is The Killer's Hot Fuss, I'd have to say that my favorite album of the year is a tie between Velvet Revolver's Contraband and U2's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Decades from now, tracks from these two albums are going to be tearing the the roof off the place on the classic rock stations.

Killers? They're a new (I guess?) alternative genre that's called Indy Rock.

The two songs you might have heard on the radio are called Somebody Told Me and Mr Brightside. The music's a bit different, but cool nonetheless.

Can't say whether anything good or bad was released in 2004, since all I hear on "rock n' roll/pop" radio is a constant stream of ads or mindless, gabbing "radio personalities".

The only rock album I bought was Iron Butterfly's 1969 album "Ball" (one of THE rock n roll albums of all time!). Soul Experience, Belda Beast, Time of our Lives . . . all rock classics.

Also bought an interesting classical album, the Empire Brass' "Greatest Hits". Its an album of great classics done by a very tight brass quintet. "Summertime" by Gershwin, "Arabian Dance" from the Nutcracker, and an interesting "When the Saints Go Marching In". Good stuff,

I didn't really buy but a couple in '04, but I think my fave of those was Ray Charles - Genius Loves Company a collection of duets with Natalie Cole, Elton John, Norah Jones, BB King, Gladys Knight, Diana Krall, Michael McDonald, Johnny Mathis, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor. Its awesome.

My second choice is "Christmas With the Rat Pack" - its great to hear those guys sing.

Oh, also bought Trans-Siberian Orchestra's The Lost Christmas. Now I know that it's only seasonal, being that it's Christmas music, but let me tell you, very few people know how to rock like they do.

7 1/2 thumbs up! :~)
