Anyone ever been to Key West, FL?

“If anyone's ever been there... and where they could recommend staying when down there.

I may be going at the end of January to catch The Romantics play... :-)

Are there places to day hike? or is it mostly touristy?

“Been there, where to stay how much do you want to spend and how close to the action do you want to be. There is a great bus system so even if your not right there, not a prob. There are chain hotels there that are safe bets and of course a lot of B&B's but they are pretty pricey.

It's hard to mess up. No day hikes on the island. There is boat service to the Dry Tortugas that is great. Takes pretty much the whole day. There is an old fort there and you can snorkel the reef is beautiful!”

“book the Dry Tortugas trip early, they fill up fast. You can even camp there. Rent a bike on Key West it's the best way to get around. Parking there sucks. The Ernest Hemingway Museum tour is cool. They just opened a Pirate museum there too.

“I lived in Miami in the early 80's and travelled to Key West frequently. It was a real neat, cool town...the last stopping point for the remaining hippy's from the 60's. I no longer remember where I stayed...any major hotel is probably just fine.”

“Yes, I've been there. I recommend staying at Bahia Honda State Park, 37 miles away from Key West. For the next 3-4 months a reservation is recommended. There are two nature trails and facilities for camping. Cabins rental are possible.”

“I went when I was in he Navy. I remember getting plastered and having no money to get back to Boga Chica where the base was. I ended up walking back and actually made it to work on time. I ended up sleeping for a couple hours under an F-14 but I made it there on time and that's what counts! ;^)”

“When I was there we concentrated on living as cheaply as possible... which led us to find an out of the way place on big pine key to put up our tent, stayed there for free 3 nights, that was 2 years ago.”

Looks like it's a little ways away from Key West itself...

We'll probably fly in on Saturday morning to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale Drive to the Keys and fly out on Monday Morning, so I hope to do a little exploring on Sunday....

(I'm supposed to be her matron of honor, but she has a group of friends out on the West Coast who are helping to plan this shower.) so now, I may need to reserve my funds for that event instead... :-( but I'd still be interested in hearing about Key West--I'd like to visit it if I can swing the funds...”

when you get there, go to a convenience store and ask for the best "laid back" places to go

key west is what it is....soak up the good and sort of ignore the bad

I enjoy the beaches at Bahia Honda better than Key West

I like key west, but about 3 days is all I want”
