I'm looking to trade my homemade tarp for a tarptent. Opinions? I'll be using it in Honduras and bug proof/waterproof is important, next year weight will be important as I plan a long hike. what do you guys like?

lots of rain, wind not too much of a problem. I will be in the cloud forest area and it gets pretty wet at night. Plus BUGS! 3 years ago on 2 different nights we had 6 in. scorpions just kind of drop from the roof very close to us

Single wall tents do not do very well in high humidity.

I'm looking at getting a rainbow tarptent from Harry Shires--the kind you can use trekking poles with so you don't need stakes--laying down horizontal not vertical- Anyone have experience with them?

I like the looks of these. Guess I'll have to check the other site for a testimony.

I have the double rainbow. While using my trekking poles does make it self standing, I find it easier to set the tent up when I stake out the corners and don't us the trekking poles.

Trekking poles weigh a bit more than stakes.

For midgets, stakes can also be used as hiking poles...not that I'd ever hike with a pole and Italiams are almost as bad.

I think I want one, even though I often hike without poles. I've never understood people's aversion to staking tents. A free-standing tent is one that blows away in the wind, right.

I was interested in the free standing aspect because I will be in Honduras and sleeping out on a porch like place that the wind and rain can blow into to--didn't know how to stake it, or stake my silnylon tarp there, also, this summer in Yosemite will be sleeping on a granite dome type place for a couple weeks and thought it would convenient not to have to stake it if a storm came up. (I most likely won't even be using it as we sleep under the stars--but just in case)

A free standing tent comes in handy on paces like a flat rock or the beach.

I'm hoping to get up in the Sierras this summer and find out about sleeping on granite.
